"Common on red, pisolit ic ironstone amongst spinifex clumps"(K. F. Kenneally).
Specimens exaninedApart from the type material (five large specimens each consisting of a branchsuch as shown in Figure I A and two small specimens such as in Figure I B)tlere is a previous collection of J. S. Beard (4105, 13 May 1965, DampierDowns, Edgar Ranges), comprising four specimens, two of them (on a singlesheet) Iodged at NSW, one at PERTH and one at K. These samples areteduced variants ('tmall shrub, 3 in. 6 in.") of the new taxon, evidently grownin a more barren soil, dillering from Kenneally's younger specimens in liavinga thicker stem (NSW) and larger leaves (K, NSW, PERTH); the pubescenc-and floral features match those of the type material.
Discussion. The resemblance to P, oboy(ttus (Gaud.) F. Muell. seems to bemerely a supcrficial one, as already indicated in the diagnosis above. It isdifficult to assess whether the plants are perennial, since the smaller isotype(7. 5 cm tall, 10 cm across) has a considerable number of inflorescences (FigureI B), and the taxor thus displays a rarge of variation in size urcommon jnpereuials in general and unknown in P. oboratus in particular.
The upper floriferous branchlets may form a right angle as is often thecase with P, oboyatus which, however, produces only terminal corymbosepanicles, not isolated spikes in lower parts of the branches as shown in Figure1A. InP. oboyatus yar. oboyatus with jts dense. persistent tomentum the h;irs

Distussiort. The new taxon is based on one collcction consisting of f ivefragments. It bears some resemblance to other low, shrubby species with woodystems i.e. P. parvifolius (F. Muell.) F. Muell., P. polukii F. Muell.. p. remoti-.f lorus Benl characterised by spalsely tomcntose slioors, more or less persistentbases of thc leaves, a hirsutc staminal cup and a[ eccentrjc style. However, none of these plants ever develops the large long-pedunculale spikes brolderthan long and eviclently not becoming ovoid, as shown by the lew taxon; inaddition, the bracteoles of the lew species are considerably larger than the bractsand the tepals conspicuously narrower than in any all ied species. The cobweb-like indumentum does not occur in related species.
. P. rcmotif lorus from the Grcgory North District (Queensland) is unique forrts extremely heterogereous pubescence, and its ovary being distinctly hirsr"rtetoward the summit. ln P. polakii the staninal ring is very oblique, its ovarylong-stipitate, the pubescelce of t lte shoots is more or less restricted to leafaxils; arrd the leaves are larger and broadcr. P. purviJblius has glaucousbranches and (sub)glabrous bracls. In th'e tar. parvifolius the tepals aie cil iatcat the margins rvith shorter hairs, and the dense dorsal indurnentirm projects toor beyond the apices of the tepals, thus rendering the flowers very dif lerent fromtlrose of P. beqrdii. It P. porriJblius var. /actil.! thc tepals are broadly limbate.
