A 'Classic' Day Out at the Riverside Centre

A bumper crowd turned out in perfect weather to the fifth thannual Alde Valley Classics event on Sunday 11 August.

There were over a hundred exhibits, including cars of all ages, shapes, colours and sizes, a tractor pageant, motorcycles and a thrilling model helicopter and stunt kite display. Home-made food, tea and cakes added to the enjoyment, as did the opportunity to browse the plant, clothing, books and bric-a-brac stalls and to try and win a bottle from the bottle stall as well as the chance to test your skills on the sideshows. The Rev. Barrie Slatter rounded the afternoon off by thanking the volunteers who gave their time to make the event such a success. All proceeds from the day are to be shared amongst all of the churches of the benefice. If you would like to see more images from the day please see the gallery which can be found at www.aldevalleyclassics.org (see page 17 for more pics)

The Walled Garden

We have sad news to report this month, Jim Mountain's workshop at the Walled Garden nursery caught fire overnight and burnt down to the ground last week, reducing all of his tools and machinery (a lifetime's collection) to ashes. Obviously he hasn’t been able to write a monthly report for September, but fingers crossed he’ll be back with us next month.

The 200 year old garden was taken over by Jim in 1987, when it was all but derelict, and has since become an immensely popular nursery and destination for an afternoon out.

Single column width (up to 95mm) charged at £3 per 10mm tall, eg a 95x50mm ad = £15 per month. (Prices will be rounded to the nearest 10mm.)50x180mm wide strips are charged at £25 per month. Please email for all other sizes, prices, enquiries.

Local History

A Pair of Postcards

Jackie Smith from Snape has written to us regarding the two photos of old cars in Snape we featured last month. In her own words; “ in the first pic the car is a Wolseley 15/60 owned by my Father-in-law Basil Smith who is also in pic, walking into the chip shop no doubt! I would say the year was roundabout 1965! The second pic is a Fiat 500 outside The Plough and Sail! that's all I can tell you about that one”.

Well done on those, Jackie; I thought the first one looked vaguely amiliar, which would make sense as my uncle had a Wolseley when I was all of 5 or 6!

Back to this month, and given the recent completion of Snape Maltings latest renovation stage (see page 13) it seemed apt to make that our subject this month. Many Snape residents will have seen lots of Maltings photos in local exhibitions, but for those who haven’t the two pics on the right will hopefully prove interesting. They hark back to the time when the Maltings were served by a dedicated branch line, which joined the Ipswich-Lowestoft track near Burnt House Farm, Farnham. It incorporated 3 wooden bridges on its way across the marshes and could only be serviced by special small engines. Despite the presence of a passenger booking hall at Snape the line was only ever used for goods wagons, which during the war included rubble brought from bomb damaged London and intended for local gun emplacements.

but who can tell us what years they were taken, and for a bonus point, identify the two cars?

E&F would love to receive more old photos, stories, and history from across the benefice, so please email us if you have something we could feature, or even if there’s something you’d like us to look into.

Snape Village Hall

Improving and maintaining the Village Hall is high on our agenda for the future and we are hoping to generate the level of support from the village that we saw at the fantastic Fun Day recently! With the new housing and plans to extend the school it is important that we ensure the hall remains a great facility at the centre of the village. Thank you to everyone who provided the very positive feedback regarding future priorities for upgrading the hall. It will be of no surprise to most of you that 'heating' was top of the list! With that in mind we are planning a series of fundraising events over the next year which we hope will be supported by those who live in the village, their friends and anyone else who enjoys a bit of fun! The first of these will be a quiz night on Saturday 5th October. Please fix this date in your diaries and watch out for more information. We will also be hosting a 60's night in the New Year with other events to follow. If anyone would like to volunteer to help at the events or if anyone has any ideas for fundraising events they would like to see take place in the village, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Caroline Beach 01728 689136 ([email protected]) or Lynne Moore 01728 688065 ([email protected])

If there are no, or insufficient (for the eight properties) persons who qualify as above the properties will in the first instance be offered to eligible persons in surrounding villages, ie Sternfield, Friston, Iken, Tunstall, Blaxhall and Farnham, using the same criteria as above. If there were still properties not taken up, the selection will be from people from the local housing Register seeking accommodation in Snape. If any occupants subsequently leave the village, the vacated property will be allocated once more using the above method, i.e. initially for Snape people.

Allocation process.

a) Applicants MUST first register on the Gateway to H o m e c h o i c e . T h i s c a n b e f o u n d o n l i n e , (www.gatewaytohomechoice.org.uk) or registration can be taken over the telephone (01394 444822) b) Applicants will still be assessed according to need, having satisfied the Snape criteria, and Suffolk Coastal District Council will be able to advise on this. c) Applicants will then be required to “bid” (express an interest) for a property, which will only be advertised for one week, (normally starts at midnight on a Wednesday) which will be widely advertised and publicised in the community in advance., as soon as Suffolk Coastal are made aware. It is not necessary to sit up until midnight to be first to bid, as all bids are considered, not in any chronological order. d) Applications will then be assessed according to Band (of eligibility) and Registration date, and from a list which prioritises the applications,, applicants will be invited to view a property.

At the time of the last PC meeting, 7 people/families had registered on the Gateway to Homechoice site. All sounds complicated, but remember the Snape connection comes before the other criteria.

Snape Affordable Housing

This subject bears similarities to the laws of physics, in which “for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.” With the affordable housing, it appears to be for every piece of information, there seems to be an equal and opposite piece of misinformation. From the outset the intention has been that the housing should be for the benefit of Snape people. Therefore the housing will be for RENT, not for sale or shared ownership to ensure that this will remain the case.

Eligible persons will 1. Have lived in Snape for the preceding three years,

OR2. Have a place of work in Snape., OR 3. Have parents or close family who have lived in

The Alde River Benefice

The Rectory,Stratford St Andrew,Saxmundham,IP17 1LJ01728 [email protected]

Dear Friends,

We are fortunate as a Benefice to have a good number of weddings each year. Interestingly they are spread throughout the year so in no way can we say that the wedding season is over. Weddings provide a great opportunity for communicating with people. Firstly there is the bride and groom with whom you spend a lot of time in preparation but then on the day of the wedding there is a whole church full of people. It is always interesting as you say goodbye to the people as they leave the church after the service what comments you receive: many will just say “thank you” and some will say “nice service” . However, the ones you are really waiting for are the people who come up to you , often later in the day and say “I just have to thank you because that was the nicest wedding I have ever been to”.

There was a general consensus that this year's Classics Day was the best one so far. It is interesting to stop and try to consider why the event was “really good “this year; why there was such a good atmosphere. Trying to analyse why something works well is quite difficult. The Classics Day was blessed with lovely weather and people lingered longer than in previous years and there was generally this very enjoyable atmosphere but is there some other special ingredient ?

Maybe people come to weddings with a degree of apprehension, especially those who do not attend church on a regular basis. Maybe their experience of other weddings has not been good. To start the service with “please switch off your mobile phones, don't take any photos in the church and above all do not throw any confetti” may not be the most welcoming of approaches. So when they are not confronted with these instructions and become involved in the singing and the prayers and find that they were quite comfortable with the whole service they are palpably relieved.

Human beings are very receptive to a whole range of signals. When speaking to someone, do you think you have their attention, are they listening to you ? What is their facial expression, do you have eye contact, what is their body language , what is their tone of voice when they respond and all this without having to actually consider what they are saying when they do respond. All this works for better or worse ; the wrong tone of voice or the wrong facial expression can make an innocent comment sound like a criticism or a question sound like a complaint.

There is a misquotation attributed to St Francis of Assisi “Preach the Gospel at all times. Use words if necessary” which is used to emphasize the importance of deeds. Clearly Jesus did preach the Gospel all the time and how will people come to know of the love of God unless it is preached to them but what we do know is that as humans we are “listening with our eyes” as well as our ears. Like the Classics Day and a good wedding there are a whole range of factors which influence us. As Christians it is important that all our actions reinforce Jesus' message of love rather than contradict them.

I am delighted to be able to tell you that Reverend Celia Cook who is currently the Curate in Aldeburgh will be joining me after Christmas and will look after the Benefice after I retire. This has only very recently been agreed and there will be much to sort out but it is very good news.

so. Jim and Marion have done much of the work themselves including putting together a huge glass house which came from Holland in sections. The Fellowship was treated to a tour of the premises including the greenhouses where much of the hard work of composting and potting is done.

Marion and Jim are keen to find ways of improving the business and have tried to keep up with the latest techniques and that most of the watering of plants is now done automatically using a computerised system. At the end of an informative and enjoyable evening, the ladies were given the opportunity to wander and buy plants.

Our chairman Janet Burrows informed the ladies that she had received some more donations from people who were not able to attend the coffee morning at her house and this meant that the money raised had now reached £160.

Women’s Fellowship thOn Tuesday, 6 August, at 7pm, members of the Women's

Fellowship met at Benhall Walled Garden where they were welcomed by Jim and Marion Mountain who explained how they came to rent the premises on a 9 year lease from Benhall Lodge Estate 26 years ago. At that time the buildings and gardens were in a very poor state so they had to have bulldozers in to clear much of the undergrowth before they could begin the process of rebuilding the outside wall of the garden and plan where to plant and re-build.

A couple of years after their tenancy started, they were approached about buying the premises and decided to do

Local Food

Recipe for the month of SeptemberBy Jenifer Hammond

The recipe for this month has been kindly donated by Dee Sewell. It comes from her blog post which can be found at: http://greensideup.ie/beetroot-cake/

Why would you put vegetables into a cake?

I'm not a food scientist in any shape or form but having baked and eaten several courgette, carrot and green tomato cakes over the years, I've observed how moist they are, that you don't need to add as much flour and that there's no hint of the usual vegetable flavour in them. What better way of using up a glut of vegetables too! Most of us enjoy eating a moist sponge and once someone has been told they've just demolished a cake full of vegetables it might perhaps be enough to encourage them to try eating the real thing. It's worth a try isn't it?

Once grown and eaten, beetroot becomes a super food, jam-packed full of healthy vitamins. Beetroot is easy to grow too – just pop the seeds directly into the soil about 2cm deep and three months later voilà! We usually bake the roots and steam the tops but now and again it's nice to try something different and I've been really looking forward to baking a chocolate beetroot cake ever since I tried a slice last year.

After much searching, the recipe I finally settled on is one adapted from a Nigel Slater 'Dish of the Day'. This isn't a cake to be rushed. It's not just a throw it all together in the food processor kind of cake, it needs some serious concentration to follow all the steps so unless you're a multitasking domestic genius (which I'm not) this is a cake to take time and pleasure over.

Don't attempt to start it if you're in a hurry or likely to get distracted every few minutes. If you can spare the time and don't mind the mountain of washing up, you'll be glad you made the effort and so will your willing cake tasters.

If you're in the right zone, you'll discover a pleasure from slowly folding the beetroot, egg yolks and whites together and watching the marblesque colours blend as they in turn are folded into the cocoa, chocolate, flour and butter.

The aromas that fill the kitchen as the cake is lifted out of the oven are mouth-watering and the velvety texture as the chocolate is drizzled over it… well you'll just have to try it for yourself! So here's the recipe…

Ingredients200g (7oz) butter, preferably unsalted250g (9oz) cooked beetroot* (takes about 30 mins to an

hour depending upon the size)200g (7oz) cocoa solids 70% dark chocolate4 tbsp strong hot drippy coffee135g (5oz) plain flour1 heaped tsp baking powder3 tbsp cocoa powder5 free-range eggs190g (6½oz) caster sugar

Ingredients for the topping100g (3.5oz) cocoa solids 70% dark chocolate100ml cream2 tbsp (30ml) maple syrup

MethodGrease a 20cm/8in cake tin and line the bottom with baking parchment. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.1. Cook the beetroot* by baking it whole on a foil lined tray in the oven for half an hour to an hour, depending upon the size of your beetroot. Remove the larger leaves before baking, leaving the stalks on the root or it will 'bleed'.2. Once cool enough to handle, peel the beetroot then blend in a food processor to a rough purée.3. Break the chocolate into pieces in a largish bowl and place over a saucepan of hot water to melt. Don't let the bottom of the bowl touch the water. Once the chocolate has melted pour in the hot coffee then break the butter into small pieces and gently stir into the warm chocolatey coffee mix. Once combined remove the pan from the heat and allow to cool slightly.4. Sift the flour, baking powder and cocoa together in a bowl and leave to one side.5. Separate the eggs into two bowls.6. Whisk the egg yolks until frothy then stir them into the chocolate and butter mixture, then fold in the beetroot.7. Whisk the egg whites until still peaks form. Fold in the sugar.8. Fold the sugar and egg whites into the chocolate mixture, then fold in the flour and cocoa mixture.9. Pour the batter into the prepared tin and bake for 40 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean.10. Allow to cool in the tin then turn out onto a pretty plate.

Chocolate toppingAdd the chocolate, cream and maple syrup to a saucepan and gently melt, stirring all the time. Once combined remove from the heat and allow it to cool a little before pouring over the top of the cake.Serve warm with custard or cream or allow to fully cool and savour with a cup of tea.

And The Sewell Family Verdict:

“Dark, rich, velvety chocolate cake with a slight nutty

Foodbank Ready to Launch

Foodbank provision is being extended to an area roughly from Peasenhall down to Glemham in the west and across the coast from Aldeburgh up to Dunwich. This is the area of parish grouping that makes up the Saxmundham Deanery and is the result of work by churches in the area in partnership with the East Suffolk Foodbank based in Lowestoft.

Why is it happening?Food giant Kellogg reported earlier this year that the poorest households in the UK spent almost a quarter of their income (23.8%) on food in 2012 and that the annual spend of the richest households was around 4%.Tough economic times and high food prices has led to an increase in foodbank use over the last four years. The Trussell Trust estimated that more than 280,000 people would be fed by their foodbanks in 2012/13.

How does a foodbank work?Schools, churches, businesses and individuals donate non-perishable in-date food to the foodbank. Supermarket collections are one of the main ways that donations are made. There are 'food drives' held at supermarkets where volunteers give shoppers a 'foodbank shopping list' and ask them to buy an extra item or two for people in crisis. This is a list of the foodstuffs needed:- Milk (UHT or powdered), sugar (500g), carton of fruit juice, soup, pasta sauces, tinned sponge pudding, tinned tomatoes, cereals, tinned rice pudding, tea bags, instant coffee, instant mashed potatoe, rice, pasta, tinned meat or fish, tinned vegetables, tinned fruit, jam, biscuits or snack bars. Food is sorted by volunteers who check that it is in date. The food is then packed into boxes and stored, ready to be given to people in need.

Frontline care professionals identify people in need.Care professionals such as doctors, health visitors, social workers, housing associations and police identify people in crisis and issue them with a foodbank voucher.

Clients receive food.In a rural environment such as ours, volunteers provide a delivery service and take emergency supplies of three

days' nutritionally balanced food to those in receipt of a foodbank voucher.

When is it happening?Everything is coming together and the system gets under way at the beginning of August, expanding as more care professionals get involved and identify those in need.

What can I do?if you would like to join the volunteer group (Disclosure and Barring Service checked) and be on standby to drive to a storage point in Leiston, collect pre-packed emergency food supplies and deliver them to voucher holders, or would like to help set up a collection point for food donations and take collected food to the Leiston storage point so that it can be taken to Lowestoft for sorting then please email Rev. Andy Wolton in Saxmundham on [email protected] Please visit this website if you would like to learn more about the work of the East Suffolk the work of the East Suffolk Foodbank:- http://eastsuffolk.foodbank.org.uk/For those who have foodstuffs that they would like to donate now, there is a collection box for food at All Saints church, Little Glemham.

And finally Even the most careful can be hit by a crisis and be unable to afford food. If this should be you then please contact your care professional and ask for help from the foodbank.

Chapter Three of the Maltings Development Comes to Completion

The frontage of the Maltings has a rich history with stories of Newson Garrett in the 1850's drawing a line to demark where he wished for theadditional buildings to beplaced; today you can still see the slight curve of these buildings. Over the last year the frontage has undergone works to carefully restore their Grade II listed features whilst the interiors have been designed to carefully combine stylish, contemporary fixtures without losing their sense of purpose and place in the Maltings.

Locals will appreciate the restoration of the Maltings clock which has been hand painted and restored with gold leave gilt by local craftsman and the renovation to the archway

has been hand painted and restored with gold leave gilt by local craftsman and the renovation to the archway which once saw trains arriving and departing from the Maltings.

The completion of these five homes and cottages which are now open for private viewing is an important milestone for the Maltings. Many will agree frontage of the Maltings is iconic and has a presence which is truly evocative.

Electric Blanket Testing Campaign 2013

It's coming up to that time of year, the summer is fast escaping us and we'll be moving into the cooler autumn period. With this in mind Suffolk County Council's Fire and Rescue Service along with Trading Standards and AgeUK are bringing you this year's electric blanket testing campaign. If you live in Suffolk and own an electric blanket we're offering the chance for you to come and have it tested free of charge in September and October 2013. We'll have an expert present to check whether your blanket is in working order and safe for use. If your blanket fails the testing we won't return this to you, however you will be offered a FREE replacement.

The nearest places for you to take your blanket to be tested are: -

Kessingland Community Centre (no appointment necessary) Wednesday 25 September

Woodbridge Fire Station Thursday 3 October

Telephone Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service on 01473 260588 to book your appointment.

Please don't forget to bring the blanket's control switch with you as this will need to be tested too. If you are unable to attend an appointment at one of the above testing locations, you can drop off and then collect your electric blanket at Fire Stations across the county at the following dates and times:

New Season of Great Movies in Glemham

The Great Glemham Village Hall Cinema, GMG or "Great Movies in Glemham" will begin its tenth season in September. These film evenings are open to everyone in the benefice. A welcoming drink and nibbles are always available and are included as part of the free entrance! Obviously there are running costs to be met and donations are invited to meet these. This has, in previous years resulted in a small surplus. This year the surplus was shared between the Village Hall and the Paddington Children's Holiday Scheme, a local charity set up to give a holiday at the Suffolk Coast to inner city children who would otherwise not get away at all.The film nights are on the second Friday of the month from September through to April (with the occasional special additional screening). They are very relaxed, informal evenings. A film is watched and people meet up and chat. Why not come along and see what it's all about? The season begins on Friday 13th September with the latest James Bond film. Doors open at 7.15 and the film starts at 7.45pm.

The programme for the Season is: 13 September Skyfall 11 October Intouchables (Untouchable) 8 November Argo 29 November Opera Special Carmen (2008 Royal Opera House version) 13 December Made in Dagenham 10 January Blade Runner (Final Cut) 14 February The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 14 March The 39 Steps (Hitchcock version) 11 April The Help

After keeping everyone waiting summer has really arrived with a bang in the last couple of months. Despite tailing off a little in August we (in Blaxhall at least) have still enjoyed primarily dry weather with temperatures passing 20 degrees on all but a single day, topping out at 29.3 on the first of the month. The sun hasn’t been quite to keen to show itself as it was during July, but on the whole it’s still been very nice. Complete details of August’s highs and lows will appear in the next issue.
