Chapter�1 Product Overview

�EasyL�nk Adv�sor

Chapter �: Installat�onThank you for choosing to use Linksys EasyLink Advisor. EasyLink Advisor is the one place to manage your network. From a single Windows XP or Vista computer, you can use this program to set up a Linksys Router, secure your network, and add computers or other devices to your network.

Plus, EasyLink Advisor offers Expert Advice and tips on the best way to manage your network and helps troubleshoot if any networking problems occur.

Before You BeginTo get started, you must have the following:

a Linksys Router

a wired network adapter on your computer

your computer near the Router

NOTE: EasyLink Advisor works only on a computer running Windows XP or Vista.

Setup Wizard InstructionsFollow these instructions:

Insert the Setup CD into the computer’s CD drive.

The Welcome screen should appear automatically. If it does not, click Start. Click Run, and enter D:\setup.exe (if “D” is the letter of your CD drive).

On the Welcome screen, you have four options:

Start Setup Click this button to install EasyLink Advisor.

Router User Gu�de Click this button to open the pdf of the Router’s User Guide.

Install Norton Internet Secur�ty Click this button to install a trial version of Norton Internet Security.

Ex�t Click this button to exit the Setup Wizard.

To install EasyLink Advisor, click Start Setup.

After EasyLink Advisor has been installed, follow the on-screen instructions.

Chapter �: Use

How to Access EasyLink AdvisorEasyLink Advisor launches automatically after it has been installed. If you exit the program, double-click its desktop or taskbar icon to re-start the program.

If you right-click the taskbar icon, you will have three menu choices available:

Preferences If you want to change the preferences for EasyLink Advisor, click this option. The Preferences screen appears.

Not�f�cat�ons If you want EasyLink Advisor to play notification sounds, select Play not�f�cat�on sounds.

Performance EasyLink Advisor sends its performance data to Linksys for future enhancements. If you do not want EasyLink Advisor to send this data, select D�sable send�ng performance data. If you want more details about the Linksys privacy statement, click Please see our pr�vacy statement for deta�ls.

To save your changes, click OK. To close the screen without making any changes, click Cancel.

Open L�nksys EasyL�nk Adv�sor To start EasyLink Advisor, click this option.

Ex�t To exit EasyLink Advisor, click this option.

How to Use EasyLink AdvisorEasyLink Advisor automatically runs a wizard after it has been installed. This wizard is dynamic, based on your current computer setup, and it helps you install the Router. The wizard guides you through the appropriate steps and offers Help Topics if you want additional information.

After the wizard has finished, three tabs are available:

My Network Click this tab to view a map of your network. Use this screen to view the status of your network and suggestions on how to manage and enhance your network.

Act�ons Click this tab to view a list of wizards that EasyLink Advisor offers. Each wizard guides you through the steps of adding computers or other devices to your network, creating a wireless connection, securing your wireless network, or replacing the current Router.

Support Click this tab to view a list of network details and resources.

To minimize the EasyLink Advisor screen, click the – button in the upper right-hand corner. To exit EasyLink Advisor, click the X button.

My NetworkThe My Network screen shows a map of your network, its current status, and tips for managing your network.

Network Map

A basic view of the network map is automatically displayed. Click Advanced V�ew if you want to view the IP and MAC addresses of your devices (additional details may be available, depending on the device type).

Name a Device

If the network has a device that EasyLink Advisor recognizes, then follow these instructions:

In the Details section, give the device a name so you can easily recognize it. (You cannot change the device type.)

Click Save.

When Advanced View is selected, the Details section may also offer a login button, depending on the device type. For example, if you want to access the Router’s web-based utility, click Log on. (Advanced users can use this utility to configure advanced features of the Router.)

If the network has a device that EasyLink Advisor does not recognize, then follow these instructions:

Click Unnamed Dev�ce to see its details.

In the Details section, select the appropriate device type from the Type drop-down menu.

Give the device a name so you can easily recognize it.

Click Apply.

After you have changed its type, the device will appear as the appropriate icon for the device type, in the appropriate group, Other Devices or Computers.

Add a Device

When you add a device, it appears with a sunburst icon. You can click the device to change its details. After you update the device details, then the sunburst disappears, as the device is no longer considered “new” by EasyLink Advisor.

View Multiple Devices

If you have more than one computer or other device, then you have two views available. For example, if you have six computers, click the arrow button to expand the view of those six computers, so their names are displayed. (Use the scroll bar to view all computers.) Click the arrow button again to minimize the view.

Offline Devices

A device is offline when it is disconnected or powered off. Any offline device appears as a gray outline and is not available for selection. To remove an offline device from the My Network screen, click the device, and then click H�de Dev�ce in the Details section.

Network Status

This section displays the current details for your network:

Network Status The status of your network is shown here.

W�reless Network (�f ava�lable) The status of your wireless network security is shown here.

W�reless Name (SSID) This is the name of your wireless network. It is the network name you had entered when you first installed the Router using EasyLink Advisor.

If there is a problem, the Network Status section will notify you and give you the chance to fix it. If you do not want alerts to be displayed on-screen, click Rem�nd Me Later. When you want to reactivate the alerts, click V�ew, and then click Refresh Network.

Expert Advice from Linksys

This section displays appropriate suggestions and tips on the best way to manage your network. For example, if your computer has a wired connection to the Router but is capable of a wireless connection, then Expert Advice will suggest that you create a wireless connection between your computer and the Router.

ActionsThe Actions screen displays a list of wizards you can run. You can add computers or other devices to your network, set up a wireless connection, secure your wireless network, or replace the current Router.

Add more computers to the network Click this link to add more computers, which can be wired or wireless, to your network.

Connect th�s computer v�a w�reless Click this link to create a wireless connection between the computer running EasyLink Advisor and the Router.

Add Other Devices

Add a dev�ce Click this link to view the settings you need to add other devices to your network.

V�ew and pr�nt all network sett�ngs Click this link to go to the Support screen to view and print all settings of your network.

Security

Change w�reless network secur�ty Click this link to change the wireless security settings of your network. Follow the wizard to set up or disable wireless network security.

Replace Router Click this link to replace the current Router. Follow the wizard to transfer the current Router’s settings to the new Router.

See a l�st of supported routers Click this link to view a list of Linksys Routers supported by EasyLink Advisor.

SupportUse the Support screen to view information about your network, visit the Linksys support site, register products, and view a list of supported Linksys Routers.

Details about your network are displayed in this section. Linksys recommends that you keep a print-out of your network details for safekeeping. To print these details, click Pr�nt Network Sett�ngs.

Get Support Click this link to open your web browser and visit the Linksys support site. There you will have a variety of support tools available for use.

Customer and Product Reg�strat�on Click this link to open your web browser and visit www.linksys.com/registration. There you will be able to create a customer account and register products.

See a l�st of supported routers Click this link to view a list of Linksys Routers supported by EasyLink Advisor.

In addition to the My Network, Actions, and Support tabs, you have four menus available at the top left-hand corner of any EasyLink Advisor screen. You can use these menus as another way to navigate EasyLink Advisor.

Close To exit EasyLink Advisor, click this option.

View Menu

My Network To view a map of your network, click My Network.

Act�ons To view the wizards available on the Actions screen, click Act�ons.

Support To view the details of your network and a list of support resources, click Support.

Refresh My Network To refresh the map and status information of your network, click Refresh My Network.

Connect Th�s Computer v�a W�reless To create a wireless connection between the computer running EasyLink Advisor and the Router, click this option.

Add More Computers to the Network To add more computers, which can be wired or wireless, to your network, click this option.

Add a Dev�ce To view the settings you need to add other devices to your network, click this option.

Replace Router To replace the current Router, click this option. Follow the wizard to transfer the current Router’s settings to the new Router.

Change W�reless Network Secur�ty To change the wireless security settings of your network, click this option. Follow the wizard to set up or disable wireless network security.

Help Menu

Onl�ne Support To open your web browser and visit the Linksys support site, click Onl�ne Support. There you will have a variety of support tools available for use.

User Gu�de To open the User Guide for EasyLink Advisor, click User Gu�de.

My Network Sett�ngs To view and print a list of details about your network, click My Network Sett�ngs.

About EasyL�nk Adv�sor To see the version numbers of the EasyLink Advisor program and agent, click About EasyL�nk Adv�sor.
