Notes on Today’s WorshipIf you were to select scripture to conclude the story of God’s plan for salvation for the world through His Son, Jesus Christ, what would you choose? The “librettist” of Messiah, Charles Jennens, selected the liturgical text read today from Revelation 5, the words of the four living creatures, the elders, and thousands and thousands of angels praising and exclaiming the Lamb, Jesus, as the only one worthy and able to open the scroll of salvation. If you were a composer, such as Handel, how would you express that scene through music? Today we experience (in part), worship through, and join our voices together to bring to life this incomparable vision of John.Handel sets the solemn character of Christ as the worthy Lamb slain for us in powerful block chords of majesty followed by the down-pouring of all of heaven’s “power, riches, wisdom . . .” given to the Son of God, vividly depicted by descending scales accompanying the voices. The song of praise (“Blessing and Honor”) of all creatures in heaven and on earth begins with strong, unison proclamations. Their song separates and divides, embracing all space and time: eternity! The final word of the Bible, the oratorio, and this revelation, Amen, receives Handel’s finest and most costly (difficult) compositional gift: counterpoint and polyphony, to express the triumph of God’s victory through Christ. As conductor Helmuth Rilling writes, “This is the overwhelming culmination of a spiritual journey that closes the door on one of the most magnificent and beloved masterpieces of all time”. Experience and share the whole story this Friday or Saturday, May 15-16, 7:30pm, with the Sanctuary Chorus, orchestra and soloists. Tickets in the Lobby, at brownpapertickets.com, or at the door.

Missions PrayerLord, we pray for the Luis Palau organization as they prepare for an evangelistic festival in New York City at Central Park on Jul 11. We pray for churches and Christian leaders as they meet and plan together. We pray for unity between the churches and for God to move in amazing ways through the festival.

Prayers for the Church Family“Beloved, let us love one another; for love is of God, and he who loves is born of God and knows God” I John 4:7On this day we honor mothers. We thank You, Lord; we owe more than we can ever repay. We remember those in need of healing, including Virginia Addington, Steve Bennett, Nathan Novak, and Mary von Scheliha. For those who help us solve our problems and conquer our temptations, we give You thanks. For those who have helped restore our health and vitality, we give You thanks. We lift up the following as they mourn: Margie Gilchrist and her family as they mourn her sister’s death, Jim Gordon and his family as they mourn his mother’s death, and Georgia McCoy and her family as they mourn the death of her great-grandchild. Above all, we remember those who have gently led us to the life of faith, we thank and praise You in the name of our Savior, Jesus. Amen.

Discussion QuestionsRead all of Exodus 6. 1. All of chapter 6 is a response to Moses’ complaint to God in 5:22-23. What

answers does chapter 6 give as a response to Moses’ complaint?2. In what ways does God reaffirm His trustworthiness in chapter 6?3. Why do you think the author inserted the genealogy into the story in this

place? What messages does that send?4. Moses’ family tree contains some ancestors who followed God faithfully,

others who behaved dysfunctionally. What are some of the patterns of behavior in your family tree that are helpful? What are some that are not?

5. What stands out most to you from chapter 6 and why?Homework from the Sermon: What are some of the unhelpful narratives you live by? What new narratives might God be trying to write into your life? If your life were a movie poster, what are some of the taglines that might be on it?
