Opticians Celebrate30th Anniversary

What were you doing in 1986? It was the year we saw Halley’sComet for the first time, the nuclear accident at Chernobyl causedchaos for many and a young Mike Tyson won his first ever boxingtitle. It was also the year that John Edmonds and Karyn Slatter first

opened the doors to Edmonds & Slatter Opticians in Blaby.

The practice openedwith just one staff member, Linda Smith, who still remains a valuedemployee to this day! Theopticians also workedclosely with a glazing

laboratory which at the time was run byRoger Slatter, Karyn’shusband.

“Before it was an opticians, the practiceused to be a decoratingshop”, recalls Karyn, looking back on theopening of the practice.“Money was tight so werefitted the shop ourselves, scraping layers and layers of wallpaperfrom the walls with the help of my dad. John helped out occasionallywhen a brush was thrust into his hands!”

1987 saw the opening of a second practice in Glenfield, followed afew years later by the opening of the Lutterworth branch in 1990. In2005 Edmonds & Slatter bought the glazing business RS Optical, toallow greater control over their products by ensuring that each lens ismade to the exact specifications required. Then when John Edmonds

retired in 2006, Partners Tim Cole and SaagarHirani took the reins alongside Karyn.

“We still offer the same high level of customer service as when we first opened in1986”, explains Tim, “and this remains a priority for all of our members of staff”.

Although much has changed since 1986, Edmonds & Slatter’s commitment to the verybest patient care remains. The number of patients who have remained loyal to the practice since the early days in the 1980s isa testament to the quality of the service thatEdmonds & Slatter provide and the patientsatisfaction achieved.

Wycliffe Lutterwor th U3AA Cycle Odyssey

Fran Brady, a senior Physiotherapist at SouthendHospital and a former student of Lutterworth Grammar School, enthralled the meeting with hertales of an American adventure by bicycle from theeast coast of the USA to the west coast. The seedof an idea was planted when she worked as an aupair to the three Lawler boys, then 4, 6 and 8 wholived on Bainbridge Island.

Fran, now 44, set off from Manhattan, after dippingher back wheel into the Atlantic Ocean, as is the

custom of many cyclists. As a solo cyclist, withoutbackup she faced each day with equanimity, a map,a tent and a large intake of calories to fuel the 90 milesshe covered daily on average. Bison, bears, snakesand mosquitoes posed threats but never real danger.

Dealing with extremes of weather conditions fromdaytime temperatures of over 100 degrees to freezingnights, she camped, stayed with ‘Warmshower Hosts’or found a motel where a hot shower and a proper bedrestored her vitality. Strong headwinds were more exhausting than hill climbs. A tornado with winds of150 mph meant a terrifying evacuation to the motelbasement. On seeing the destructive power of thewind she was relieved she had not been camping that

night.

The Americans shemet along her route gaveher shelter, advice aboutgood cycle tracks andshared stories and fables. She was thrilled by thedramatic scenery and thehospitality shown by all.On reaching the PacificOcean she was met by the Lawlers with a bottle ofchampagne.

A collection for Cancer Research totalled £183.Many thanks to all who were so generous.

Drink Driving StatisticsOn average 3,000 people are killed or seriously injured each year in drink drive collisions.

Nearly one in six of all deaths on the road involve drivers who are over the legal alcohol limit.

More than half a million breath tests are carried out each year and on average 100,000 are found to be positive.

Driving or attempting to drive whilst above the legal limit or unfit through drink carries amaximum penalty of 6 months imprisonment, a fine of up to £5,000 and a minimum 12months driving ban.

Causing death by careless driving when under the influence of drink or drugs carries amaximum penalty of 14 years in prison, a minimum 2 year driving ban and a requirementto pass an extended driving test before the offender is able to drive legally again.

The only safe option is not to drink if you plan to drive. Never offer a drink to

someone else who is driving. PLEASE DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE

De sig n e R’ s e Di t:Get ready to embrace springWho else is bored with winter? With the release of spring/summer 2016 colours and collections, we’ve said farewell towinter and hello spring! Just because it’s cold outside, doesn’tmean our homes can’t be full of spring interiors and we’renot alone thinking that; Beth ert designer at Broughtonhouse interiors shares her thoughts on how to welcome thespring into our homes.

It’s been a long cold winter and sometimes it can feel like certain rooms in the house can get ‘stuck’ in the season. Addingtouches of colour on scatter cushions, rug or a vase will revivetired schemes and bring life and visual interest to a room.

Lavender Lipstick – correctly use this colour to add a levelof sophistication and warmth. It’s surprisingly soothing, bedrunk in love with this luscious shade.

Dark teal – would equally be at home with rich woods and gilt or fresh whites and seagrass furniture.Blush Powdery Pink – a romantic colour that warms up the essence of a room. Doesn’t look juvenile

at all when used with metallic tones like antique brass or bronze.emerald green – rich, vibrant, exciting colour

will transcend any room. Like putting a plant in aroom, it brings life to a space. Everything feelsfresher and takes on this luxurious vibe.

Colours have travelled from the fashion catwalksinto our homes to bring a touch of individualityand personality. Spring is characterised by the layering, coordinating, harmonizing and contrasting of soft clean chalks, pale hues, comforting mid tones, spring like pastels andcoloured inks. Offers both contemporary and traditional homeowners the option of being simplistically stylish or extrovertly different.

The palette caters for all tastes and preferences. It will add style, bloom and brightness to yourhome. See advert below.

But Chocolate is just Chocolate isn’t it?We oen think that people in times gone by had a better qualityof life than we do, despite all of the conveniences of modern daylife. But imagine an easter without chocolate!

In UK and Europe, the earliest Easter eggs were painted and decorated using hen, duck or goose eggs and only evolved into artificial eggs by the end of the 17th Century, but still no chocolate! e first chocolate eggs didn’t appear until the beginning of the 19th Century in Germany and France and weresolid eggs. Making hollow eggs was very difficult because the chocolate used today didn’t exist and they didn’t become widespread until well into the 20th Century whenmodern chocolate making processes were developed.

We can be fairly sure that the 19th Century eggswouldn’t have been labelled as clearly and informatively as the eggs on sale today!

Perhaps when you choose an Easter egg you baseyour choice on whether it has Hello Kitty on the front or Spider Manon the box or do you try and work out which has the thickest shellor the most Smarties? Or if you have a more sophisticated taste perhaps it’s the number of Belgian truffles hidden inside?

Enjoy your egg whichever it is!! Happy Easter!
