My Dear Friends,

Today is Easter Sunday! Christus resurrexit! Resurrrexit vere! Khristos anesti! Alithos anesti! Christos voskrese!

Voistinu voskrese! Chrystus zmartwychwstał! Prawdziwie zmartwychwstał! Cristo è risorto! È veramente risorto!

¡En verdad resucitó! Le Christ est ressuscité! En verité il est ressuscité! Christ is risen! Truly, He is risen!

Today Our Lord Jesus Christ has risen from the dead and freed us from unending death and opened the gates

of Heaven for all who believe. He came for the Latins and the Greeks. He came for the Slovaks and the Polish.

He came for the Italians and the Irish. He came for the Germans and the Spanish. He came for the French and

the English. He came for the Filipinos and the Koreans and the Vietnamese and the Indonesians. He came for all

peoples of the world, for He is the Savior of the world. On this Easter Sunday we remember all of our blessings

that God has bestowed on us. We remember the many times we have been blessings for others. We are united as

one people under one God. We are the one body of Christ united to our Head, Jesus Christ. We are truly blessed,

especially here in Torrington, for God is in our midst. He is here, truly present, in our churches and in our families.

He is truly present as He feeds us with his Body and Blood at every Mass. Jesus has promised us that where

He is we also may be, where He is going we know the way. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life!

He is the Resurrection! If we die with Christ we know that we will also live with Christ! Death has no power

over us anymore, for Jesus has conquered death once and for all so that we may have eternal life. Easter is one

long celebration as we celebrate Easter Sunday every day of the week for eight days as we say as a Church,

Today is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad! We finish our week long Easter celebration

with a holy hour of Divine Mercy on April 8th at St. Mary’s Church as we receive our Lord’s enduring mercy.

May you have a blessed Easter Sunday and come to know the Risen Lord in your life.

God bless you.

Fr. John

Cathedrals and parishes

throughout the country are encouraged to join together in prayer and adoration

seeking God’s mercy for ourselves and for our nation.

April 8th

Divine Mercy Sunday Join us for a Holy Hour

from 2-3pm as we pray the

Chaplet of Divine Mercy

St. Mary Church 85 Pulaski Street

Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the

treasury of compassion — inexhaustible, look kindly

upon us and increase Your mercy in us,

that in difficult moments we might not despair

nor become despondent, but with great confidence

submit ourselves to Your holy will,

which is Love and Mercy itself.

provides help to those in need! Together, we can

and do make a profound difference in the lives of

many individuals and families, in a way that exceeds

anything we could hope to achieve on our own.

Please consider supporting this important initiative.

Every gift makes a difference. Organizations right

here in our own town received funding from the

Appeal’s Vicariate Outreach Program which serves

our local neighbors.

Defending Our Religious Liberty

Pope Francis has said: “Religious freedom is not only that of private thought or worship. It is the liberty to live, both privately and publicly, according to the ethical principles resulting from found truth.” This is why it is important that we continue to put pressure on our elected officials to change the federal health care mandate which forces religious institutions to pay for medical procedures that violate their moral principles.

Please pray for

Vincente Rivera

a recently deceased

member of our parish family.

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord.

And let the perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul, and the souls of

all the faithful departed,

through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Origin of Divine Mercy Sunday the Divine Mercy image, the Chaplet,

and the Novena

Saint Faustina: Mankind’s need for the message of Divine Mercy took on dire urgency in the 20th Century, when civilization began to experience an “eclipse of the sense of God” and, therefore to lose the understanding of the sanctity and inherent dignity of human life. In the 1930s, Jesus chose a humble Polish nun, St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, to receive private revelations concerning Divine Mercy that were recorded in her Diary. Pope St. John Paul II explains:

This was precisely the time when those ideologies of evil, nazism and communism, were taking shape. Sister Faustina became the herald of the one message capable of off-setting the evil of those ideologies, that fact that God is mercy—the truth of the merciful Christ. And for this reason, when I was called to the See of Peter, I felt impelled to pass on those experiences of a fellow Pole that deserve a place in the treasury of the universal Church. ~ Pope Saint John Paul II, Memory and Identity (2005)

Divine Mercy Sunday: St. Faustina’s Diary records 14 occasions when Jesus requested that a Feast of Mercy (Divine Mercy Sunday) be observed, for example:

My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that

the Fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. … Let no soul fear to draw near to Me. … It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy. (Diary, no. 699)

On May 5, 2000, five days after the canonization of St. Faustina, the Vatican decreed that the Second Sunday of Easter would henceforth be known as Divine Mercy Sunday.

The Image: Jesus appeared to St. Faustina in a vision, with his right hand raised in a blessing and his left touching his garment above his heart. Red and white rays emanate from his heart, symbolizing the blood and water that was poured out for our salvation and our sanctification. The Lord requested that “Jesus, I trust in You” be inscribed under his image. Jesus asked that his image be painted and venerated throughout the world: “I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish” (Diary, no. 48) and “By means of this image I will grant many graces to souls” (Diary, no. 742).

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy: The Chaplet was also given to St. Faustina with this promise: “Encourage souls to say the chaplet which I have given you” (Diary, no. 1541).

… Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy. I desire that the whole world know My infinite mercy” (Diary, no. 687).

The Divine Mercy Novena: Jesus gave St. Faustina nine intentions for which to pray the Chaplet beginning on Good Friday and ending on the Saturday before Divine Mercy Sunday.
