Background Patients, families and communities everywhere present problems beyond the capacity of any one profession.

Doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, social workers and others are responding together to that challenge in country after country

Page 3: Easter Countries Interprofessional Education Network

IPE is taking off worldwide (WHO, 2010; Frenk et al., 2011). Conferences are being convened and networks established in Australasia, Europe, Japan and North America to provide channels for mutual support and exchange.

So far so good, but interprofessional activists spread wider, including many in African and Eastern countries from the Mediterranean to the Pacific.

Distances are vast, initiatives scattered and face-to-face meetings too often precluded.

So what is missing?

Page 14: Easter Countries Interprofessional Education Network

Work is in hand to engage educators, practitioners, managers, researchers and policy makers in 91 African and Asian countries.

Some are 'testing the water', others already committed to IPE and collaborative practice. We have established contacts, so far, in ten out of 53 African countries and 15 out of 41 Asian countries.

Progress so far

OUR NETWORKING METHODS

1. GOOGLE GROUPHow is that possible? Electronic communication comes to our rescue.

We created a mail which has 50 members in eastern countries with the chance to communicate with each other and share ideas.

Join us:[email protected]

Conclusion

Our target by next year is to include 50 countries. Bigger still is the challenge to establish networks owned by, and run by, those involved by region or country.

One network spanning Africa and a large part of Asia would plainly be unmanageable. Two - one for African and the other for Asian countries - might just be possible, but the latter, based on advice that we have received, might be better divided between the Eurasian and the Arab countries

Page 24: Easter Countries Interprofessional Education Network

Decisions must, however, rest with those involved, taking into account moves already to establish national networks, for example, in Iran and Turkey, concentrations of interprofessional committed institutions and individuals, offers of support and leaders-in-waiting.

We see our role, along with the World Coordinating Committee, as being to facilitate if and when invited.
