Father Terry KeehanFFaatthheerr TTeerrrryy KKeeeehhaann

If you are a visitor to Holy Fam-ily, welcome! Welcome not only to our community but to the new life of Easter that we celebrate in faith today. Welcome to the bright light of newness that Jesus Christ brings to our world. You are most welcome to share your faith in God

and belief in Jesus Christ with us in any way that the Holy Spirit might move you, even if that is simply in prayer with us today. If the Holy Spirit is moving you to take a deeper look at what we have to offer, we would be honored to have you join us for any of the events, ministries or programs in the following major ministering communities: Family Faith, Teen Faith, Adult Faith, Holy Family Catholic Academy, Worship, Pastoral Care, Outreach and Justice and Operations.

Welcome to all of you who are already engaged to any extent in advancing our mission. Thank you and please know how signifi cant your energy, enthusiasm and passion are in getting us where we are here at Holy Family, and helping the continued growth that we are experiencing that will lead us to a bright new life in the future. I not only thank you but I also ask you, as newcomers and currently engaged parishioners, to more deeply connect “Your Gifts and Our Mission.” This is the centerpiece of my vision of stewardship for all of us, the giving back to God for the countless blessings that we have and the building of the kingdom of God right here, right now, in the midst of our everyday lives in the real world that we all live in. We are blessed with constant growth here at Holy Family. We are a vibrant faith community, passionate about our sense of who we are in Christ Jesus, and dedicated to life-long learning. The best way for all of us to connect our Gifts with our Mission is to access our website at www.holyfamilyparish.org for more information.

We see strong similarities in the two Gospel stories that guide our prayer this weekend: Luke during our Vigil and that of John on Easter Sunday. In both stories, women fi rst discover evidence of the Resurrection. They are the fi rst ones that God entrusts with the breaking news of new Christian life. The stark evidence is that the stone is rolled away from the tomb. What stones have you been able to roll away as a result of your faith in the resurrected Jesus? What additional stones need to be rolled away? In asking these questions we place ourselves in the story and it can come alive in our hearts amidst the animation of our Christian imagination.

Let’s also respond to the same question asked of those faith-ful women on the fi rst Easter morning by the angels in dazzling clothes, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?” Let’s look for life during this Easter season. Let’s enthusiastically embrace new life that comes to us from faith. Let’s not only see, let’s believe as the disciple John did in the telling from the Gospel that bears his name, even when as it says in Luke that the story, “…

seemed like nonsense” and some, “…did not believe it.”

New life comes to us in many ways. I was inspired by our President Barack Obama’s comments during his speech commemorating the 50th anniversary of the signing of The Civil Rights Act at Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Library in Austin, Texas this past week. Obama commended President Johnson and referred to him as a man, “Weaned in a world of racial hatred who used the offi ce of the presidency to move racial equality in this country forward.” Obama said that is an example of our government at work. He went on to quote Johnson as saying, of the fi ght for racial equality, “We must move forward and accomplish what needs to be done, and with courage as our companion, we shall overcome.” Obama reminded us that LBJ “never forgot his poor upbringing that connected him with the impoverished brown kid on a Texas farm, the black kid growing up in Watts or the poor white kid in Appalachia.” Obama and Johnson bring us new life from the workings of our government in advancing the basic dignity of human life rooted in our equality and our similarities, not in our differences.

Another form of new life that I am excited about sharing is a vision and plan for refl ecting on relevant, real and pertinent issues in our world. Our staff and leadership here at Holy Family will be bringing a variety of speakers to address current issues in a non-traditional, progressive and alternative way. Please look for men and women speakers who will be sharing their wisdom, creativity, prayerfulness and passion during weekend liturgies and immediately following weekend liturgies in addition to weeknights. My vision and hope is to invite quality speakers to talk about real world issues to further enhance the sacredness of the Eucharist. We believe in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, so to further immerse ourselves in and celebrate the sacredness of life, our already high quality adult speaker offerings will be more connected with the weekend worship experience.

The fi rst example of this will be on the weekend of May 31 and June 1 when Deacon Tom Lambert will be with us to talk about mental illness during all weekend Masses. Please look for addi-tional presentations and spread the word about the unique way that we will be presenting speakers and topics. If you have suggestions for topics and speakers, please contact Marsha Adamczyk in our Adult Faith offi ce at [email protected] or at 847-907-3458.

I want to extend a profound thank you to all of you who worked to make our Gala such a signifi cant and successful event. To those who attended, to those who supported in other ways, to those of you who shared your valuable time and creativity to enhance the event, to those of you who spread the word, and to those who invited others to join us for the event and particularly to Bernie Schaeffer, Erica Byers and Sheila Stadler—our Gala Co-Chairs – Thanks to all of you for supporting life-long learning at Holy Family.

Weekly ReadingsMonday, April 21 Acts 2: 14, 22-33 Matthew 28: 8-15Tuesday, April 22 Acts 2: 36-41 John 20: 11-18Wednesday, April 23 Acts 3: 1-10 Luke 24: 13-35Th ursday, April 24 Acts 3: 11-26 Luke 24: 35-48Friday, April 25 Acts 4: 1-12 John 21: 1-14Saturday, April 26 Acts 4: 13-21 Mark 16: 9-15Sunday, April 27 Acts 2: 42-47 1 Peter 1: 3-9 John 20: 19-31

Easter SundayActs 10:34a, 37-43Peter confi dently describes the events of Jesus’ life and early ministry to the household of Cor-nelius, a new convert. He speaks to them about how God anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit and power, how he “…went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil…” He then describes Jesus’ death on the cross followed by being raised on the third day by God. Peter concludes that we are all witnesses commissioned to preach and testify that Jesus is the one appointed by God.

Colossians 3:1-4St. Paul writes that we who believe in Christ have died with him in baptism and need to focus on new life with him “…seated at the right hand of God.”

John 20:1-9John’s Gospel recounts the story of Mary Magdalene who fi rst discovered the stone rolled away from Jesus’ tomb entrance. She runs to tell Peter and the others about her fear that someone had taken Jesus’ body. Peter and the Apostles then run to the tomb, John arriving fi rst but waiting for Peter to arrive. Then they enter to fi nd the empty tomb with Jesus’ burial cloths laid aside and the burial head wrapping placed in a separate place. John, the beloved disciple, “…saw and believed” while the others “…did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.”

Every year it happens:earth shakes her sleepy head, still a bit wintered and dull, and feels new life stirring

Every year cocoons give up their treasures, fresh shoots push through brown leaves, seemingly dead branches shine with green, and singing birds fi nd their way home

Every year we hear the stories

empty tombs, surprised grievers, runners with news and revelation, unexpected encounter, conversations on the road, tales of nets fi lling with fi sh,and breakfast on a seashore

And every year the dull and dead in us meets our Easter challenge:

to be open to the unexpected,to believe beyond our security,to welcome God in every form, and trust in our own greening. “Out of the Ordinary” by Joyce Rupp

Thank you for

your support of

the Campaign!

Due to the incredible generosity of our parishioners, the Our Families, Our Faith, Our Future campaign is progressing very well. Early in the campaign we paid off our outstanding mortgage to the Archdiocese. Major projects have been undertaken and accomplished. The completed Brennan Center conti nues to be a center of learning for our Academy, Family and Teen Faith classes as well as a multi tude of adult

programs and lectures.

Recent campus enhancements include new interior and exterior signage that improves our ability to more warmly and accurately welcome parishioners and visitors to and within our faciliti es. We have

reconfi gured existi ng space, creati ng a new sacristy adjacent to the newly remodeled Social Justi ce area. The former sacristy is now available for gatherings and meeti ngs. We have begun repairing our roof,

windows, and siding, as well as starti ng replacement of our original HVAC units.

The repair and replacement of church window shades is complete on the East and West windows. Following Easter, we will complete the work on the North and South windows. This project will result

in fully operati onal sunscreen and room darkening shades. More ti me than anti cipated is required since the scope of repairs has extended beyond the original esti mate of three shades to include twelve

shades and all new bracket mounts.

As pledges conti nue to be paid, we are committ ed to completi ng projects as originally outlined at the beginning of the campaign. Next, we will be enhancing and reworking the narthex to make it more

welcoming and functi onal.

Campaign Progress as of March 31, 2014

Flower CareOur watering ministry takes care of our plants and fl owers throughout the campus all year long. Currently they are looking for some extra help to water our beautiful fl owers in the church, chapel and narthex during the Easter season. Would you be willing to help?

Please contact Joan Serna at [email protected] for information

and to volunteer to lend a hand.

An essential part of our mission is vibrant worship. As part of this commit-ment, we have invited dynamic speak-ers who will address a variety of rel-evant, engaging topics during upcoming weekend liturgies. We believe these topics refl ect the concerns people have in their everyday lives. May our shared faith experience help us as we journey together with greater awareness and compassion. On May 31 and June 1 Deacon Tom Lambert, co-chair of the National Council on Mental Illness will be speaking about how mental illness can be very isolating for every person in the family. Mental illness affects 6% of the population yet it is one of the least talked about and least supported medi-cal issues. The Barrington chapter of NAMI, National Alliance on Mental Illness, will have representatives in the narthex fol-lowing each mass to answer questions and present the many programs they offer individuals and families affected by mental health illness. As we celebrate the holy season of Easter, we have many things within our own community that point to the Risen Christ alive among us.

Holy Family Catholic Academy is particularly blessed to have two of our members witness their faith by joining the Catholic church.

• Grace Buchholz, Grade 4, asked to be welcomed into the Catholic faith. Fr. Terry baptized Grace at a recent all school mass. Our entire community was so honored to share this special moment with Grace and her family.

• Mrs. Meredith Canali, Middle School Math Teacher, also just completed the RCIA process this Easter. She and her family have been part of the HFCA community for 3-years, and we are blessed to witness her full initiation into the faith.

Special thanks to our amazing 6th grade class and teachers, Mrs. Roberta Muran and Mrs. Pam Gannon. They beautifully prepared our school community for Holy Week by performing the “Living Stations of the Cross” for the entire school.

Also, congratulations to our HFCA Alum who participated in the HF teen’s performance of the Passion Play.

Thanks to all for making this Easter Season so special.

This is the Day!

Host A Home Mass

Celebrating Mass in a home setting is a very special opportunity to meet people in a more informal, intimate setting. Home Mass dates available are:

Wednesday, May 28 and June 11, beginning around 6:30pm.Who to invite: Defi nitely invite your Catholic friends, but also consider this an opportunity to invite Catho-lics who may have drifted away from regular Mass attendance, no matter what the reason. Additionally, consider inviting non-catholic friends who might be curious about the Catholic faith or have questions about why we do certain things the way we do.Items needed to celebrate Mass: Use things that are already in your home: small table such as an end table for an altar, a goblet for wine, plate or bowl for hosts, small glass for water, plain cloth napkin for a purifi cator and a candle. Hosts will be brought to your home.

If you have any questions about hosting a home mass, contact Linda Arthur at [email protected].

CATHOLIC CHARITIES

Hearts for Homeless FamiliesMAY 3, 2014

Catholic Charities’ 25th Annual Hearts for Homeless Families benefi t will be held Saturday, May 3 at Chevy Chase Country Club in Wheeling. This elegant dinner-dance will benefi t the agency’s New Hope Apartments program, which provides emergency and transitional housing for homeless families with children, and the counseling and support needed to help them become self-suffi cient. This is the main fundraising event each year for Catholic Charities’ Northwest Region.

The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with cocktails, a silent auction and live music. An exqui-site dinner planned by an executive chef will be served at 7 p.m., followed by dancing to the Stu Hirsh Orchestra. Tickets are $175 each, or a table of 10 for $1,650. Supporters also may help sponsor the event, donate items for the silent auction or purchase ads in the event program book.

For more information or to reserve tickets, contact Northwest Regional Director Mike Waters at (847) 376-2118 or [email protected].

This benefi t supports the families in the New Hope Apartment Program that are published in our bulletin monthly to share their progress moving from homeless-ness to self-suffi ciency.

Catholic Social Teaching – United States Catholic Conference of BishopsOver the next 12 months, all seven themes will be highlighted. Today, the sixth theme is presented.

The Church’s social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of holiness amidst the chal-lenges of modern society. Modern Catholic social teaching has been articulated through a tradition of papal, conciliar and episcopal documents. The depth and richness of this tradition can be understood best through a direct reading of these docu-ments. In these brief refl ections, we highlight several of the key themes that are at the heart of our Catholic social tradition.

Care for God’s CreationWe show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship of creation. Care for the earth is not just an Earth Day slogan, it is a requirement of our faith. We are called to protect peo-ple and the planet, living our faith in relationship with all of God’s creation. This environ-mental challenge has fundamental moral and ethical dimensions that cannot be ignored.

The environment is God’s gift to everyone, and in our use of it we have a responsibility towards the poor, towards future generations and towards humanity as a whole. . . Our duties towards the environment are linked to our duties towards the human person, con-sidered in himself and in relation to others. It would be wrong to uphold one set of duties while trampling on the other. Charity in Truth (Caritas in Veritate. . . ), #48, 51

Loss of Appetite in Elderly: Causes and How to CopeBy: Sarah Stevenson

“Loss of appetite and changes in appetite are a natural part of aging, but it’s still important to make sure seniors get enough nutrients. Our nutritionist Heather Schwartz shares her advice on what to do if your elderly parents won’t eat.” Elderly dietary problems can be caused by a number of different factors: lack of interest in food due to changing taste buds, depression, or loneliness; lack of energy to cook; loss of appetite due to health condi-tions; and medication side effects, to name just a few. Also, it’s normal for the appetite to change with age. “However, minimizing the detrimental effects of poor nutrient intake is always important, no matter from where the low appetite stems” says Heather Schwartz, A Place for Mom nutrition expert and Registered Dieti-tian at Stanford Hospital and Clinics. And of course it’s critical to rule out any underlying health problems, so if your loved ones aren’t eating well, a good fi rst step is always to consult a physician.

What’s a Normal Elderly Appetite? What Should I be Concerned About? The aging process brings with it a host of physiological, perceptual, and other changes that can lead to decreased appetite in the elderly. A lower metabolic rate and lessened physical activity means that seniors generally need fewer calories, and that’s normal. Dental problems or gastrointestinal changes (like lactose intolerance) that go along with age can affect the appetite, too. Changes to the sense of smell, taste, and even hearing can affect the enjoyment of food—also normal. However, if your loved ones are making poor food choices because of their changing tastes, or if they aren’t getting enough to eat, then that’s cause for concern. It’s critical for seniors to get the right nutrition for their changing dietary needs, because vitamin or nutrient defi ciencies can cause signifi cant health problems. Changes to taste or appetite also occur in conjunction with some serious illnesses, including head and neck cancers, salivary gland dysfunction, thyroid disorders, mouth and throat infections or periodontal disease, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Any unexplained changes to your loved ones’ dietary health, including unexpected weight loss, weight gain, or general malaise, should be checked out with a physician.

How Can I Stimulate Appetite in my Senior Loved Ones? • Increase nutrient density, not portion size. • Set a regular eating schedule. • Encourage social meals. • Be aware of medication side effects. • Consider using an appetite stimulant.

Did you know?Beyond Sunday worship our campus is bustling with activity. During the last few weeks, Brennan Center classrooms held Academy classes, Family Faith and Teen Faith classes, and Teen meetings such as Mission Trip and Peer Ministry. Small Christian Communities, RCIA candidates, Friends in Faith, Marian Ministry, Bible Journey and Bible Study participants deepened their faith. Eucharistic Ministers, Choir Members, Proclaimers, Junior High Stations of the Cross, and Passion Play teens trained and practiced. Baptismal Prep, Knights of Columbus, Spirit Camp, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Academy School Board met to plan their ministries. Support programs, such as Alexian Brothers Counseling Services, the Augustine Fellowship, Assist-A-Family, Disability Ministry, Grief Support and Job Support ministered to those in need. We welcomed our PADS guests on Sunday nights.

The vibrant worship, life-long learning, and passionate community never ends.

We extend our sincere thanks to Emium Lighting who has generously donated and installed new enhanced LED lighting for our Cross of New Life. Emium is owned by the Cantarutti family who are long-time Holy Family parishioners. Visit them at Emium.com.

And don’t forget to look over at the church when you drive by at night! We are defi nitely a beacon in the dark for those travelling along Palatine Road.
