Sun Country Cleaners Scores aTouchdown with an ELHSFootball Mom

Jennifer Vazquez experiencedwhat every parent of a high schoolathlete fears. Her son Noah, who playsfootball for East Lake High School, had to be carried off the field on astretcher. Noah is okay now, and hismom wrote Neighborhood News &Lifestyles to tell us how impressed shewas with Sun Country Cleaners. Thefollowing is Jennifer’s account.

“On November 29th Noah wasinjured during a playoff game and wastaken to the ER by ambulance fromthe field,” says Jennifer. “Of course wewere all distraught and the last thingwe were worried about was the factthat they had to cut Noah's jersey #8from him. Thank God he was able togo home early the next morning andis recovering from a cervical sprain. Inall of the commotion we were givenNoah's belongings on the way out.Not until I went to throw his clothesin the laundry did I realize his jerseywas shredded to pieces. I washed it

anyway. The next day when Noahwent to grab a piece of clothing fromour laundry room he came out withhis shredded jersey. Especially as a sen-ior, this meant a lot to him. On Mon-day, something brought me to SunCountry Cleaners on RidgemoorBlvd. I have lived in Lansbrook for 11years and have never been in once. AsI approached the counter I spottedthe seamstress hard at work on hersewing machine, I brought the shred-ded jersey over. She took one look atit and said she would do her best, Ibegged her to have it ready by thatFriday for the next playoff game; eventhough Noah couldn't play I wantedhim to have his jersey. She told me shewould try her best. I got a call thevery next day to pick up the jersey. Iwasn't sure what to expect. What Ifound when I picked up the jersey wasamazing. If you didn't know the storyof the jersey you would never know itwas cut to pieces the week before.Grace is a true angel, and she wouldnot let me pay a penny for the repair, she just wanted Noah to have his jer-

sey back. A football player she hadnever met before. I will be a frequentcustomer from now on at Sun Coun-try Cleaners, and I will never forgetthe gesture made by a stranger whomade my son happy to have his jerseyback.”

Finding outstanding care and anexcellent “pet-bedside manner” is im-portant when it comes to yourbeloved pets. Pet owners know thatfamily extends beyond people and wewould do anything to give our pets ahappy and healthy life full of vitality.Outstanding veterinarian Dr. SarahSchacht, of Tarpon Woods VeterinaryMedical Center, is knowledgeable, kind and has a real love for animals. The environment she has created atTarpon Woods Veterinary Center isbeautiful, comfortable and equippedwith the latest in state-of-the-art vet-erinary medical equipment.

Love is at the center of the veteri-nary care provided by “Dr. Sarah” andher exceptional team. Since openingthe center on Tarpon Woods Boule-vard in March 2010, Dr. Sarah haswon the hearts of her patients andtheir owners. She is more than just avet; she is a friend, as her patients’owners will tell you.

It is extremely hard tolose a pet, as Cheryl Daven-port well knows, and whenthe end of a pet’s life comes, you need someone who notonly provides excellent end-of-life care, but also is com-passionate. Cheryl is glad tohave a vet like Dr. Sarah, say-ing, “She has been the bestvet I have ever had. I lost twoof my dogs this year. Shetook great care of them andeven when she was on vaca-tion in North Carolina shecalled me to make certaineverything was okay. When mydog was sick, she called me at night tocheck on his status. I have just neverhad a vet treat me so well. He kind-ness and compassion is unbelievable.Every time I bring my pets in she actslike a best friend.”

Sally Hewitt says, “Tarpon WoodsVet has been wonderful. I wish Dr.Sarah was my doctor and I have toldher that many times. She is really per-

sonable and her staff is excellent. Ihave referred her to everyone who hasmoved into my neighborhood of Tar-pon Woods. Dr. Sarah always takes theextra step in her care. She actuallywent to my neighbor’s house whentheir cat had to be euthanized. Myneighbor asked to spend extra timewith the cat after it had passed andDr. Sarah left and gave her the timeshe needed and came back later to

pick up the cat. She and her staffare just wonderful.”

Ceci had a dream tocreate an opportunity to help others, while also keeping her family close.Originally from New Hampshire, Ceciand her family set a goal to all live inFlorida near each other. “I had a vi-sion and a beautiful plan to open acenter that all my children could be in-volved in and be together as family,”says Ceci. We have been in Florida forseven years now and I have been ableto watch my grandchildren growingup, while pursuing my passion as atherapist. This is a dream come true inthe making.”

Ceci attended the North EasternInstitute of Whole Health in Man-chester, NH, where she learned thehealing effects of Eastern Medicineand massage treatments. Massage ofTrinity focuses on taking care of thewhole self in an intimate, relaxing en-vironment. You will be swept away in

good feelings, vi-brations and posi-tive energy whilevisiting Massage ofTrinity. Ceci says,“Our center has avery Eastern andZen feel to it, butwe want people toknow that this is notabout any sort of re-ligion––our atmosphere is to help peo-ple relax, teach compassion throughour actions and remind people to con-nect with their higher consciousness.”

Myofascia Release, Pre-Natal Massage,Therapeutic Massage/Neuromuscular,Reiki Energy, Healing Touch, RejuvSwedish Massage and Bhakti Massage.

Try a Thai Massage to open andtone the systems within your body.Thai massage is very similar to doingyoga on a table; the massage therapistwill stretch you and apply pressurewith gentle rocking and rhythmiccompressions and guided breathing togive you a full stretch massage. TheFour-Hand massage originates fromancient Ayurveda and involves twotherapists working in harmony. Cou-ples massages are the perfect gift toconnect with a loved one in your life, whether it is your significant other, friend or special family member. TheCouples Massage room, Harmony, isthe perfect atmosphere to relax andenjoy a full-body treatment that is in-tensely relaxing and rejuvenating. Oneof my favorite massage treatments isthe Hot Stone Massage; a relaxing andrestorative treatment that utilizeswarm river stones and hands to pene-trate deep into the muscle. The heatfrom the stones radiates throughoutspecific parts of the body to relievetension and stress trapped inside themuscles.

Ceci says, “While we provide aservice, we strive to empower guestson their personal path to healing.Massage should not be seen as a lux-ury but as an investment in their well-

ness. I am so grateful for my team ofwonderful massage therapists. Thankyou to Bill, Donna, Joyce, Cenia, Car-men, Judy and Christy for their excel-lence in commitment to Massage ofTrinity.”

Massage is an excellent alternativeto treat pain for many people. Insteadof opting towards pharmaceuticals, visit Massage of Trinity for your thera-peutic restorative session, whether fordeep muscle aches, sports strains orjust a moment to de-stress. You willfind that Massage of Trinity’s thera-pists’ attention to detail and excep-tional skill will benefit you in mind, body and spirit.

Introducing the brand new, first ofits kind, Zone Fitness Club, located at1252 Seven Springs Boulevard whereeveryone gets results. Why? I’ll cut tothe chase because I have a feeling thatyou think you’ve heard it all before.Guess what, this is different. This isawesome. This is science! This is a fit-ness club for everyone, whether you’venever worked out before, or you’vebeen an athlete your whole life. Soyou’re thinking, how can one fitnessclub claim to be for everyone and yetgive everyone unique results? That’sthe science of Zone Fitness. Then, what if I mentioned that there aren’tany contracts to sign? No long-termobligations? Okay, so you’d be inter-ested, right? What if I told you that thecost was only $15 per month? I’ll tellyou what I’m doing, I’m signing up!

I’m going to preface this story bysaying that for years I was one of thosepeople who wrote “LOSE WEIGHT”and “GET IN SHAPE” at the top ofmy New Year’s Resolution list. I talked

about it. I complained about it. I suf-fered. I had given up. I was nevergoing to be “cute” or “in shape”again. Those days were “over” for me.I’d hear myself saying, “If you see merunning, you better run too,” and I’dlaugh louder than anyone around meso that I wouldn’t show my embar-rassment. Then I’d say, “Oh, I’d workout, but my back, neck etc…” I evenhad a sign in my kitchen that said,“There’s a skinny girl inside me, but Ican usually shut her up with cookies!”

Then a very close friend saidsomething to me that really changedmy life. She said, “When you’re ready, you will. That’s it. You have to decideto make a change. It won’t beovernight, but it will happen if you de-cide to value yourself as much as youvalue everyone else.” She was right.

That was almost 50 pounds ago.Right now, I’m in better shape than Iwas when I got married. Was it easy? No. Was it instant? No. It took timeand dedication, and a little sacrifice, but I did it. Guess what? If I can do it,you can do it! And with a place like

Zone Fitness Club in your arsenal, youare literally guaranteed results. So, amI done? No way, you know what I’mgoing to do next? I’m joining ZoneFitness Club!

I’ll tell you why: It’s affordable,it’s convenient, and most importantly,it’s the first club of its kind to put meinto a personal zone of fitness. I’m nottalking about just chatting about mybody mass index with some sweatyguy in a tank top and filling out a sur-vey. I’m talking about a fitness clubthat offers the ability to monitor myheart rate, my fitness levels and toeven help me challenge myself withinmy zone, so that I’m not comparingmy workout with anyone else’s! Why?

Their zone is going to be completelydifferent from mine, and when I’m inmy zone, I know I’ll be seeing results, because it means that my body will beworking out at just the right amountfor my own goals. That means I won’tburn out, and I won’t give up! That’swhy they can guarantee results. Yourzone is for you and for you only, andthe club is designed to facilitate you atevery level. If you want to work inde-pendently-you’ve got it. If you lovethe motivation that a class gives you,you can do that! So you, yes - you, will lose weight, get in better shape, flatten that tummy, tone those armsand feel better inside and out whenyou join the new Zone Fitness Club.

The Details:The Zone Fitness Club has over

42 pieces of state-of-the-art cardioequipment, as well as free weights,TRX Training equipment, abdominalequipment, and the club functions alot like a cross-fit circuit. There’s reallysomething for everyone, and youdon’t have to live there to see results!

Zone Fitness Club is privatelyowned and operated, and staffed bypeople who are specifically trained infitness, so that everyone on the staffcan help you achieve your goals andoffer a level of service that is unparal-leled. Zone Fitness Club also offers“executive style” locker rooms, whichmeans, you can feel comfortable hit-ting the showers after your workoutand getting back to work, school, andlife!

The Science of the ZoneThe President and Founder of

Zone Fitness Clubs is Tim Forrest, who has 20 years of experience in thefitness industry, and who until recentlywas the VP of Sales and Operationsfor a company that ran 18 clubs in 7states. His experience has helped himto see where the fitness industry istrending and to custom-create a club

of his own that would blend thenewest workout technology with thecustomer service standard that he feelsmakes or breaks any workout facility.

He says, “Our mission is to makeit affordable and to make it easy soyou can get fit and you won’t quit.”He adds, “I wanted an affordablemembership, a motivating environ-ment and a way to connect to mymembers. The Zone Fitness Clubknocks down those walls of age, weight and gender, because everyoneis working at the right zone for theirbody.”

Forrest believes that when youput every member into their own per-sonal zone, it creates an enjoyable, lessintimidating environment. It takesaway that competitive environmentthat keeps people away from the gym.If you are not afraid of the gym, butfeel like you’ve been there, done that, you’re going to love this, because ithelps you to regain momentum andcapture exactly the kind of activity thatyour body needs to start makingprogress again. As you get more fit, your zone changes!

He says, “The reason why peoplestop losing weight when they exerciseis because they plateau. Our heart-rate

training will help you get over thathump.”

Here’s how it works: Memberspurchase a comfortable MYZONEPhysical Activity Belt that, when worn, monitors physical activity done both inand out of the club and stores that in-formation. Members can log in andsee their activity from anywhere, andcan participate in challenges based ontheir physical activity, measure resultsand achieve goals. This way, your fit-ness goals are completely your own, because the technology is a part of theworkout, giving you the chance tomonitor your heart’s rate and inten-sity. This makes your workout safe, and to be honest, it’s exciting to seeyour results. This is the science part! This heart-rate, training based fitnessprogram helps your body to worksmarter, instead of harder so youwon’t burn out, you’ll just burn fat!

Forrest explains, “When yourheart rate is in its zone for a period of12-20 minutes, your body will worklike a furnace, which means that evenwhen you are done working out, yourbody will still be burning fat.”

Let me be clear, you don’t haveto be out of your comfort zone to getinto the zone. Your workout will becompletely customized to you by acertified fitness trainer. Then, whenyou sign up for one of their Zone Fit-ness Classes, which are classes madeup 10-12 people, you’ll get the chanceto work out in a group setting whilestill meeting your own personal goals. This can be fun and motivating, butmost importantly, the classes help youget and stay in your zone.

Forrest is so sure that you’ll seeresults that it’s guaranteed. He says,“If you work out 3 times a week for amonth performing the ZONE Work-out and you don’t see results, I’ll re-fund you the whole cost for yoursessions for the month. I’m so confi-

dent that our program will changeyour body.”

Now is the science part required? No! If you’re just looking for a beauti-ful new club to join, where the equip-ment is brand-spanking new, themembership fees are incredibly afford-able and it’s run by experienced staff, then head on over! The MYZONEbelt is completely optional!

There’s More? Affordable? Check! Fun? Check!

No Contract? Check! Kid Zone?CHECK! If you’re a busy parent likeme, you’ll be so happy to learn thatZone Fitness Club offers a Kid Zonethat helps keep kids in their own cre-ativity zone while you’re getting inyour workout! You do not have tochoose between being fit and being agood parent! These kid-focused,hands-on activities will make your kidsactually want to go the Zone FitnessClub with you! When you compareclubs that offer childcare in the area, their monthly fees are nearly 3 timesmore expensive, and they don’t offerthe technology, the science, or theguarantee, so what are you waitingfor? Go check out the brand newZone Fitness Club and make this yearYOUR year. You can do it, Zone Fit-ness Club will show you how.

Scubanauts International - “Education through Exploration!”By Katie Thomas

Scubanauts International, a locallybased non-profit organization foryouth development strives to connectmiddle and high school aged studentsthrough collaborative marine researchexpeditions, exploration, scholasticachievement and wonder. Scubanautsacts as a leadership program and per-sonal development gateway for stu-dents interested in marine life andscience. Dedicated to enriching thelives of youth with education an explo-ration, Scubanauts and the youthwhom immerse themselves in the pro-gram have bright futures ahead!

Founded in 2001 by CaptainDavid Olson of Palm Harbor, Scuba-nauts utilizes informal science educa-tion through underwater diveexploration. Captain David wanted togive students a chance to become in-volved in a program that honed in ondiving skills, while building characterthrough research and marine develop-ment. Captain Olson’s quest started inteaching recently certified scuba stu-dents to use scuba as an outlet forlearning more about marine scienceand has now grown into a fabulouslyenriching way for parents to connect

with their children and work buddy-to-buddy in making a difference in ourcoastal waterways.

In the summer of 2001, Scuba-nauts were introduced to the Gulf-stream Natural Gas Systems by theFlorida Fish and Wildlife Research In-stitute, allowing the team to maketheir first big impact in our oceans.Scubanauts were able to spend theirfirst summer salvaging and relocatingcoral colonies, sponges and other bot-tom dwelling organisms that would beimpacted by underwater pipeline con-struction. Since 2001, Scubanauts havebeen granted funds to continue theireducational experience and tutelageworking with Gulfstream Natural GasSystems. The students plan the divesthemselves and work on collecting dataparameters, habitat surveys, fish countsand focus on underwater photographyand video skills.

Scubanauts scuba missions complywith the American Academy of Under-water Sciences to ensure safe dive prac-tice for all Scubanauts. TheScubanauts’ Diving Control Board iscomprised of graduate students, volun-teers and involved parents that are alldiving safety experts in order to ensuresafe and properly managed dives.

NASA awarded Scubanauts with a$341,000 federal grant in 2007 to fa-cilitate continued research, promotedirect interaction with scientists and es-tablish new chapters. Scubanauts cur-rently has four chapters located inTarpon Springs, St. Petersburg, KeyWest and most recently Tampa.Scubanauts International is working toincrease opportunities for young diversand avid science lovers by enlistingnew members, recruiting the best

mentors and establishing new chaptersnationwide and internationally.

Scubanaut teens (12-18) aretaught leadership skills, self-develop-ment and personal challenge withinthe program. Jim Cassick of Scuba-nauts says, “This is character buildingthrough marine science and scuba div-ing. We offer our kids hands-on experi-ence that they cannot get anywhereelse. Scubanauts really helps us stayconnected with our teens and gives us

a healthy outlet to surround them withpositive role models, adults and kidsalike.” Jim and his son Colin startedScubanauts in 2008 and have em-braced the family oriented programfull on. Jim says, “We become a teamand also family. Our vacations nowaren’t just for luxury, we have a mis-sion to take on challenges, set goalsand make an impact on our environ-ment and the lives of our kids.”

Recently, Scubanauts has pairedwith the Wounded Veterans Challenge(http://goo.gl/VFp8ly), in whichwounded combat soldiers that aremissing limbs work together withScubanauts to replant coral reefs andimprove their lives with therapeutic

outdoor challenges. Scubanauts usuallypartner with wounded veterans a cou-ple times a year; trips can include any-thing from diving to hiking in survivalchallenge situations.

The Foisey family from ScubanautInternational’s Tarpon Springs chapterare thrilled with the Scubanauts pro-gram. As a family, the Foisey’s experi-ence with Scubanauts has been unique, thrilling, educational and a great wayto create a lasting bond with memoriesthat last a lifetime. “We absolutely loveand thoroughly enjoy the Scubanautsprogram,” says Cyndi Foisey. “Wejoined with our three kids in 2011 andour youngest will be joining as soon asshe is able. Scubanauts International is

a great character building and net-working program for students whohave a passion for diving and even in-stills a love for learning in our kids’lives. We have gone to WashingtonD.C. twice with Scubanauts forC.H.O.W. (Capitol Hill Ocean Week),which gave the kids unique opportuni-ties to talk with professors and researchscientists, as well as meet with Senatorsand higher-ups involved with ocean re-search and marine education. We havegone to the Keys to develop coral reefsand it is amazing to give our kids anexperience that they wouldn’t neces-sarily have in other youth programs. The leadership skills they are buildingare priceless and we are really im-

pressed with all the teenagers involvedin the program. Scubanauts allows stu-dents and families to spend their timedoing something that they love, whilemaking a positive impact on the ma-rine environment. We love the Scuba-nauts program and all it has done forus as a family. My husband Paul and Iwant to enrich the lives of our kids andScubanaut’s has given us the right out-let that we all enjoy.”

The importance in helping yourchildren find positive role models andfriends is the key to success during theimpressionable middle school and highschool years. Scubanauts provides anoutlet for kids and parents to have fun, while learning and making a positivelong-lasting impact on the marine en-vironment. With guided learningthrough discovery; Scubanauts is ableto provide activities focusing on leader-ship, community service, social interac-tion, fitness, environmental science andcitizenship.

Scubanauts may be just theprogram for you to provide devel-opment building, character shapingand a fun outlet based in a learningenvironment! If you are interestedin joining Scubanauts visitwww.scubanautsintl.org or [email protected].

By Matt SelbyOur magazine has been promot-

ing shopping local long before it wasthe cool thing to do; before “SmallBusiness Saturday” – which AmericanExpress promotes like crazy for oneday per year. In fact, it's been everyday since 1994 when my dad TimSelby and his former brother in-lawGary purchased an 11-month-oldpublication, consisting mostly ofarticles about national news, on white-woven paper and turned it into theoriginal New Tampa NeighborhoodNews.

People learn enough about whatis going on in the Nation by turningon the TV. But what is going on inour hometown? Where do we find outabout that? Taking this into account, the theme of the magazine waschanged. Immediately tossing thecanned information out the window,Tim and Gary focused their attentionon what was going on in the localcommunity.

Twenty years later, Gary still hasthe New Tampa Neighborhood News, as

well as another in Wesley Chapel, andmy parents Tim and Doreen Selby, who have since parted ways with Gary, expanded Neighborhood News &Lifestyles into Trinity, East Lake,Odessa/Lutz/Land O' Lakes andWestchase, with four publicationsreaching over 70,000 mailboxesmonthly. In 2013, my wife Alexis andI expanded the Neighborhood Newsand Lifestyles into the Carrollwoodarea, extending the reach of theNeighborhood New & Lifestyles nameto another 14,000 homes and busi-nesses.

We hope you’ve enjoyed readingabout what is going on here in ourcommunity over the past year andhave had a chance to frequent thelocal businesses we help promote. Wereally want to thank all of you whohave supported small businesses in2013 and we hope you will continueto support them in 2014. It makes allthe difference in the world to thiscommunity. By shopping at small busi-nesses it keeps almost 75% of themoney right here in our own econ-

omy. If we want our neighborhoodsand surrounding Tampa Bay areas tothrive it’s our responsibility to supportour neighbors. The following are justa few of the comments some of thelocal business owners had about theirexperience with us this past year.

“We started running out of foodat 10 in the morning,” says Brucefrom Hattie's Cafe and Beanery.“We've never seen such a rush! We’vebeen in the Tampa Tribune and thatgot us a little bump, we had a 2 and1/2 minute spotlight on Fox News –that barely got us anything. In my 50years plus of being in this industry,I’ve never felt such a push from localadvertising in my life! People come inhere and tell me why they came in andthey say they came in because they sawus in “their” Neighborhood News mag-azine. They know it’s about theircommunity and they love it!”

“Everything about the magazine,I absolutely love! It actually broughtme around 200 new customers afterthe article came out!”__Angel fromNew Beijing restaurant.

Lea from Great Clips says, “Thispublication is so great for our commu-nity businesses and has certainly beenoutstanding for mine. I have adver-tised for the past several months in themagazine with great results. Alexis dida front-page article on my Great Clipssalon at Fletcher and Dale Mabry inthe November issue of the magazine. The feedback we received was amaz-ing! Friends, neighbors and customersget this magazine and mentioned it tome and to our staff as well. I wouldhighly recommend putting an ad inthe Neighborhood News & Lifestylesmagazine. These ads are reasonablypriced and provide great exposure foryour local business. And, Alexis andMatt are terrific to work with.”

Robert from Twinz Big CityHotdogs says, “Not only did we haveour best Thursday, Friday, Saturdayand Sunday ever since being open, butwe had our best days by at least 30%. Iadmit I was skeptical at first, but I ama true believer in what you guys cando now. By far the best thing we'veever done! We got to meet so many

great people in this community thatcame in directly because of what youwrote about us and people weretelling us they would be back beforethey even tried the food. They were sosure they were going to love it basedoff what you wrote about us. Aftertasting the food, people were telling usit’s the best burger or the best hot dogor the best wings they have ever hadand they didn't even know we werehere! Thank you!”

Hearing these kind of success sto-ries gives me chills because I'm a smallbusiness owner too; we are not ownedby some huge corporate media con-

glomerate. My wife and I are localswho know this area – who love thisarea – and we know how much workgoes into making a business successful. You have to believe in what you aredoing; you have to live it and you haveto love it. People can tell which busi-nesses operate simply to make a buckand which truly have a passion forwhat they offer. The business ownerwho understands that it’s his or hername on the line and their reputationis all they have – that's who we striveto promote. The small business ownerthat just needs people to know hisstory to be successful!

Staying up-to-date on new prod-ucts and keeping things fresh is impor-tant at Salon Solei. The salon recentlystarted using Essie Gel, which is simi-lar to Shellac, except it is a brand new

Essie product with a fresh set of col-ors. The brand uses LED rather than aUV light. UV light causes apprehen-sions of skin damage because of expo-sure, so LED can be a better optionfor concerned clients. Also, the LEDlight cures quicker. It has no harmfulrays and it takes a quarter of the timeto cure than Shellac does.

Salon Solei also now offers Red-ken’s new sulfate-free line of hairproducts called Color Extend Magnet-ics. The next generation hair colorcare technology utilizes Redken’s ex-clusive IPN and Charge-Attract Com-plex to deliver charged amino-ionsthat are attracted to the hair fiber tohelp seal in color. Color Extend Mag-netics products make sure hair color issecured with maximum vibrancy andalluring shine. The line includes sham-poo, conditioner and hair mask.

With the salon being a notable ac-count for Redken, the brand offersthem support with continuing educa-tion courses throughout the year. Thesalon staff recently went to a show inOrlando called Centricity. While theywere there, they had the opportunityto meet Sam Villa who Marissa de-scribes as a “big deal” in the hairworld. Sam Villa serves as Redken’s

Education Artistic Director and is theChairman of his own digital educationand styling tools company. The salonstaff has fun with these education op-portunities. At this particular eventthey participated in a contest wherethey all dressed as Redken productsand got chosen to go on stage for acostume contest. Being involved with

an industry leader such as Redken,“helps [us] stay current and trendy,”said Marissa.
