2002 Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage BUY

Region: Epernay, Champagne, FranceVarietals: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier Style: Value VintageNotes: 2002 was an exceptional year for Champagne

and here we see the reward. If you were to sum this wine up in one word it would be harmony; every chord is hitting the right note. Built around generous fruit with great restraint and classic toasty notes, this is hallmark vintage Champagne. For all of this musical grandeur it’s still going for a song. $99ea $88 per mixed 6

NV Paul Louis Blanc de Blancs BUY

Region: Loire Valley, FranceVariety: Chenin BlancStyle: Flirty FrenchNotes: We tend to run the other way when we

see Loire Valley sparkling but this grabbed our attention. What made this stand out comapared to what we have tried previously was its clean path and its perception to be more from Champagne than Loire bubbles. This is a celebratory sparkling, with that French flair at a user friendly price.$23ea $20 per mixed 6

NV Scott Wines Spindrift Sparkling BUY

Region: Adelaide Hills, SAWinemaker: Sam ScottStyle: Complex & CreamyNotes: We have been diggin’ everything that Sam

Scott has been throwing at us over the past year with his own label. Last year we were charmed by his cheeky sparkling Pinot Grigio and this time round the Spindrift stood out for its more robust characters. Toasty brioche, baked pears with a soft creamy mousse. You can see Sam’s smile in every glass…$26ea $23 per mixed 6

Bubbles from the New World

NV Primo Estate 'Primo Secco' Sparkling BUY

Region: McLaren Vale, SAWinemaker: Joe GrilliStyle: Aussie 'Prosecco'Notes: It was only a matter of time before Joe

Grilli would release Italian inspired bubbles, and he’s done wonders with his first release. This is not meant to be a sit down and critique wine; this is unadulterated joy in a glass. Delicate bubbles blend effortlessly with crisp acidity leading to a slightly savoury finish.$19ea $16 per mixed 6

2011 Montevecchio Moscato BUY

Winemaker: Sandro Mosele & Kim ChalmersStyle: Breakfast & Dessert!Notes: We can’t have a Red Book without Moscato;

after all it does come out in the warmer months of the year. Despite its frivolous nature this is quite a serious Moscato looking more Italian than any Aussie version we have seen. At the end of the day this off-dry frizzante is still meant for fun and good times... Let them roll!$20ea $18 per mixed 6

2006 Brackenwood Sparkling Shiraz BUY

Region: Adelaide Hills, SAWinemaker: Damon NagelStyle: Pepper, Spice & All Things NiceNotes: For those of you who take your sparkling red

seriously (and we know you are out there) this is your man. There is the definitive power and generosity you would want from this type of wine, but the fascinating aspect to this drop is its pepper, spice and superb dry finish. An aroma that’s hard to ignore, this is one of the most intelligent sparkling reds we have seen in a while.$27ea $24 per mixed 6

NV Bundaleer Sparkling Shiraz BUY

Region: Southern Flinders Ranges, SAWinemaker: Angela MeanyStyle: A Good FriendNotes: There is a reason why this wine continues

to amass a swag of awards. It’s unassuming and at the same time quietly confident. What we love about this wine is its all-round quality and value. Dark berries are rich, spicy, hearty and slightly sweet with very good balance throughout. The Christmas turkey will thank you for it. $18ea $16 per mixed 6

2010 Babich ‘Headwaters Organic Block’ Sauvignon Blanc BUY

Region: Marlborough, New ZealandWinemaker: Adam HazeldineStyle: Minerals with FruitNotes: This is a cracking example of flavours of the

vineyard shining in the fruit, and the organic production is without doubt the leading reason behind this. It’s the mineral notes that make this stand out from the regular NZ crowd, whilst not forgetting its varietal expression that has made Sauvignon Blanc so popular. A lovely textured finish completes the package.

2011 Penny’s Hill ‘The Agreement’ Sauvignon Blanc BUY

Region: Adelaide Hills, SAWinemaker: Ben RiggsStyle: Easy Does ItNotes: Another winner from the Penny’s Hill

team! The fruit here comes from Kuitpo, which is just about on the border for the Hills into McLaren Vale, suiting this ’Vale producer well. Classic tropical notes of gooseberry and lychee with a touch of steamed asparagus working with a crisp and crunchy finish. A real crowd pleaser…

2010 Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc BUY

Region: Marlborough, New ZealandWinemaker: Kevin JuddStyle: Style & SubstanceNotes: Kevin Judd registered the Greywacke

name way back in 1993 but it wasn’t until 2009 for his first release under this guise. Between that time he was the man responsible for most of New Zealand’s premium Sauvignon Blanc and the growth of its popularity across the globe. The wine itself is a refreshing style with a flavourful palate of melons, peach and capsicum built with great acidity and fantastic length. $26ea $22 per mixed 6

2010 Fromm ‘La Strada’ Sauvignon Blanc BUY $27ea $24 per mixed 62010 Pierro L.T.C. BUY

Region: Margaret River, WAWinemaker: Dr Michael PeterkinStyle: WA Wonder WhiteNotes: There is much confusion as to what LTC

refers to… Originally it was 'Les Trois Cuvées' meaning a blend of three varieties but nowadays it is known as ‘little touch of Chardonnay’. Either way this is a very gifted blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Chardonnay taking the ‘classic dry white’ to another level of class. A fresh approach with some zesty intrigue, balanced with a superb tight structure.$28ea $25 per mixed 6

2011 Clos Clare Riesling BUY

Region: Clare Valley, SAWinemaker: Tom & Sam BarryStyle: My Pretty…Notes: The Clos Clare Riesling is slowly but surely

becoming a perennial favourite at EEC as it was once again a standout in our Red Book tasting. The 2011 shows great poise and ticks all the boxes for a benchmark Riesling. The aromatics really have us excited, capturing spring in a bottle with delicate notes of citrus blossom leaping out of the glass. The palate delivers tight, focussed fruit with a charming dry finish. $26ea $22 per mixed 6

2010 Mayhem & Co. ‘Old School’ Riesling BUY

Region: Adelaide Hills, SAWinemaker: Brendon KeysStyle: Juicy LimesNotes: Here we have a wine that proves ‘Single

Vineyard’ doesn’t need the expensive price tag attached. This Riesling has a lovely easy feel, bursting with preserved lemons and a touch of fresh zest; it then builds with richer notes of stone fruits. There’s a bit more texture involved with the Mayhem which in its simplicity, adds to this gorgeous interpretation. $17ea $15 per mixed 6

Page 12

2009 Kanta Riesling BUY

Region: Adelaide Hills, SAWinemaker: Egon MüllerStyle: Precise German

Engineering Notes: The ‘flying winemaker’ concept isn’t new,

but the coup of having Germany’s King of Riesling, Egon Müller come all the way to Adelaide to make a dry white wine is not to be taken lightly. Now in its fifth vintage, the 2009 Kanta is showing more focus, structure than most Australian Riesling. Maybe it’s the old world winemaking techniques like cold maceration, natural ferment and long lees contact. Maybe it’s the purity of the Adelaide Hills fruit... in any case, it’s a brilliant wine. $30ea $27 per mixed 6

2011 Mr. Mick Riesling BUY

Region: Clare Valley, SAWinemaker: Tim AdamsStyle: Clear Cut ClareNotes: A new brand from a name renowned for

Clare Riesling and at a bargain price… yes please! Tim Adams has paid homage to his mentor Mick Knappstein with his new label ‘Mr. Mick’ and produced an attractive, soft Riesling perfect for the warmer months ahead. Following the classic Aussie dry style, this is plentiful with your usual suspects of lemon and lime delivered with a fresh approach. $14ea $12 per mixed 6

examples of what value looks like, that are true to their variety and region. Region: Vinho Verde, Portugal Varietals: Alvarinho & LoureiroStyle: Immaculate ImportNotes: A captivating and very intriguing white

from the north west of Portugal. Vinho Verde is not just the region of origin but also refers to the meaning 'green wine', an indication to the youthful state in which it is often sold. 2010 Deviation Road Pinot Gris BUY

Region: Adelaide Hills, SAWinemaker: Hamish & Kate LaurieStyle: Just RightNotes: Hamish & Kate continue to produce classy

wines from their small winery in the Adelaide Hills. This lovely little Pinot Gris demonstrates the perfect balance of sweet and dry fruit with poached pear, spiced peach and a touch of clove. This has the right texture to go well with food but not too oily to have without. Great on a nice summer's afternoon. $23ea $20 per mixed 6

2010 Cave Vinicole Pinot Gris BUY

Region: Alsace, FranceStyle: TraditionNotes: To really understand this variety you must

start at its spiritual home. The art of classic Alsatian Gris is texture whilst maintaining a dry & sophisticated finish. This wine has all the trademark nuances as mentioned built around caramelised pears, lemon rind and pan fried figs. Most importantly it looks, smells and tastes of Alsace and at the price it's a great introduction to the area. $32ea $28 per mixed 6

2010 Hunky Dory Chardonnay BUY

Region: Marlborough, New ZealandWinemaker: Claire AllanStyle: Excellent Entry LevelNotes: Value plus Chardy, that still delivers the

richness you would expect from a wine twice the price, will always be a winner in our books. The perfect thing about the Hunky is it doesn’t go over the top by pushing the buttered popcorn boundaries, but rather a flourishing stone fruit nature. Think baked nectarine crumble with a dollop of double cream.$20ea $17 per mixed 6

Region: Geelong, Macedon, Cardinia Ranges, Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula & Gippsland, VIC

Winemaker: Matt HarropStyle: Definitely Not ABCNotes: A captivating and multifaceted Chardonnay

Region: Provence, France Style: A New Benchmark?Notes: Take two of the biggest names from

Burgundy; Jacques Seysses (Domaine Dujac), Aubert de Villaine (Domaine de la Romanée-Conti) and their friend Michel Macaux and their motivation to make wine in the south of France. Their rosé is a Cinsault dominated blend with only a small amount of skin contact giving it a gorgeous blush appearance. A soft and delicate palate flows in a harmonious fashion making a very moreish red. $22ea $19 per mixed 6

2010 Vissoux Les Griottes Beaujolais BUY

Region: Beaujolais, FranceVariety: GamayStyle: More PleaseNotes: Is the Gamay uprising finally upon us? Over

the past year the interest in Beaujolais and Gamay has grown at an exponential rate and wines like this Vissoux ‘Les Griottes’ are leading the charge. 2009 Rosso Di Rocca Vino Rosso BUY

Region: Piemonte, Italy Varietals: Nebbiolo, Barbera, Cabernet FrancStyle: A Perfect FoodieNotes: We are enormous fans of the great

Italian region of Piedmont and all that they produce, but unfortunately like most we can not afford to drink Barolo every night of the week. Lucky for all Piedmont fans we have this number to keep all happy… a blend of 80% Nebbiolo, 10% Barbera and 10% Cabernet Franc. Light on its feet with classic Neb tones of tar and roses with dark cherries, this is a very clever and great value drop. $32ea $28 per mixed 6

and his once small label to the empire he has built; to become a household name and we're very proud of our long association.
