CHINGAY 2018 @ HEARTLANDS
Our town welcomed Asia’s grandest street and floats parade, Chingay @ Heartlands on 10 March 2018. This year’s theme of “Cultural FUNtasy”highlighted our rich multi-ethnic and cosmopolitan culture in a way that is uniquely Singaporean and involved many organisations and communitiesto create a dazzling extravaganza of colours and cultural diversity. Vibrantfloats and dancing performers of different races and ages in their colourfulcostumes passed through our towns. Residents enjoyed the parade as One United Singapore. This year, we also hosted friends from Japan, Vietnam and Indonesia who all joined in our celebrations, showcasing their food, culture and performances. In various parts of our town, carnivals entertained the residents with performances such as multi-cultural stage performances, inflatable children games, exhibition booths, mural wall painting and many more. The event ended with a beautiful seven minute fireworks display. What a night to remember!

Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat presented the Budget before Parliament on 19 February 2018, laying out the Government’s revenue and expenditure for the 2018 financial year. Here are six things from this year’s Budget announcements that will affect Singaporeans.
1. ONE-OFF SG BONUS FOR ALL SINGAPOREANSEligible Singaporeans above 21 years old will receive a one-off “hongbao” of up to $300 this year.
2. INCREASED GSTAs the Government’s spending on healthcare, infrastructure and security has gone up and is expected to increase further in the years to come, the goods and services tax (GST) will be increased for the first time in more than a decade by 2%. Implementation will be sometime from 2021 to 2025.
Lower income groups will have schemes in placed to help overcome this increase. GST on publicly subsidised education and healthcare will continue to be absorbed.
3. ENHANCED PROXIMITY HOUSING GRANTEnhanced proximity housing grants are now available at $20,000 for families buying a resale flat to live near their parents or children and $30,000 for those buying a resale flat to live with their parents or children.
From 2019 to 2021, households will receive $20 more in their annual U-Save. This is to help cover the annual impact of the carbon tax, which is estimated to result in up to an average of $13.70 in additional electricity and gas expenses..
