EARTHQUAKES

How Earthquakes occur.

When two parts of the earth's surface move suddenly in relation to each other along a fault line, due to tectonic forces, an earthquake occurs. A tremendous amount of energy is released in the form of tremors and vibrations, such earthquakes are called

'TectonicEarthquakes'

How earthquakes affect peoples. lives. The shaking caused by the seismic waves of an earthquake damages buildings and causes them to collapse. The amount of damage caused to a building is directly related to the amplitude, time frame and amount of shaking from the earthquake. Larger earthquakes shake longer because they rupture a larger area than smaller earthquakes do. Earthquakes can cause massive damage to large infrastructures, and repairing or replacing these can take a long time. Bridges and overpasses that are damaged have to be rebuilt, and traffic has to be re-routed during the rebuilding process.

Where earthquakes occur the most. Most earthquakes occur along the edge of the oceanic and continental plates. The earth'scrust (the outer layer of the planet) is made up of several pieces, called plates. The plates under the oceans are called oceanic plates and the rest are continental plates

what is an Earthquake.

a sudden violent shaking of the ground, typically causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earth's crust or volcanic action.

Why tectonic plates move.

Tectonic plates move because they are floating on top of the liquid

mantle. The mantle itself moves due to convection currents: hot rock

rises, gives off some heat, then falls. This creates vast swirls of moving

liquid rock under the crust of the earth, which jostles the plates of crust

on top.

What natrual disasters can be caused by earthquakes.

★ Volcanic Eruptions

★ Landslides and Avalanches

★ Tsunamis

★ Flooding

★ Liquefaction

How many earthquakes have happend in nz

over 15,000 earthquakes in New Zealand. About 100 – 150 of these quakes are large enough to be felt, - the others we only know about because they are recorded by seismographs.
