Our Earth

Rocks and minerals are all around us. We see them in mountains, lakes and rivers, parks and even in our own backyards. Many people use the terms rocks and minerals as if they are the same things. Well, they are, sort of. Rocks are made of two or more minerals.

Rocks, as Several Materials • Rocks are more like cookies. They have several

ingredients. A chocolate chip cookie has chocolate chips, flour, butter, eggs, and sugar. Each of these ingredients would be similar to minerals. When the ingredients are mixed and heat is applied by an oven, the mixture blends together to become something new – a cookie. A rock!
