The science of the Climate Change

• Climate change is defined as a change of climate which is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity that alters the composition of the global

• Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global mean sea level.

Background of Earth Hour Campaign

• Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned their lights off for one hour to make their stand against climate change

• Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating

• Earth Hour has done a lot to raise awareness of climate change issues.

• Earth Hour 2010 takes place on Saturday 27 March at 8.30pm (local time).

Energy Saving Tips

• Improved energy efficiency of lightning's by using compact fluorescent lights lamps (CFL) instead of Incascadent Bulbs

• Improved heat insulation and building designs• Switch off the geyser• Install aerated shower heads to minimize hot water consumption• Switch lights off• Keep lids on the pot when you cook to conserve heat and energy;• Dont leave electrical appliances switched on when not in use.• Boil only the amount of water you need instead of a full pot or kettle• Close the fridge door every time you take things out. Check that the

seal closes properly

• Install large north-facing windows

• Install a solar water-heater instead of an electric geyser;

• Use the sun to dry washed clothes instead of a tumble drier

Conclusion

As a coal based economy with high energy intensive industries, There is a need for the country to join hands with international community in raising awareness around Climate Change.
