Cave Paintings Egyptian Tombs City Ruins being excavated
Detailed artifacts carvings in stone
Artifacts are man made items that were left behind by past civilizations.
Simple tools made from stone
Artifact vs. Fossil
Artifacts are man made items left behind by past civilizations
Fossils are the remains of plants and animals that have been preserved
Archeologist use artifacts to describe how people lived before there was written history
Scientist use fossils to study extinct plants and animals. To determine how they looked or lived
Hunters & Gatherers (Foraging Societies)
Almost all food was collected through the hunting or trapping of wild animals and the gathering of wild plants such as fruit, berries, and greens. These societies were build upon the clan structure of a few extended families living together. Clans were nomadic following the food supply and typically settled around a source of water.
Early cave drawings depict a group hunt
Early tools were made from animal bones, stone or other gathered material.
Early Hunter gatherer dwellings included caves or primitive huts made from gathered material
All parts of an animal were used by Hunter Gatherers. Animal skins (pelts) were used for clothing and shelter. Bones and teeth were used as tools
The Stone Age
Paleolithic Era • Early Stone Age
Mesolithic Era •Middle Stone Age
Neolithic Era • Late Stone Age (new)
Stone tools have little shape, they were extremely primitive
Stone tools begin to take shape and have points
Stone tools begin to have multiple uses and shapes
Early Man’s Migration Out of Africa
The migration of early man out of Africa into other continents has been documented through the discovery of fossils and other archeological artifacts.
Domestication of Plants & Animals
Wolves (dogs) were some of the first domesticated animals. They assisted humans with hunting prey.
Sheep, goats, cattle and pigs were the first animals domesticated for food.
Grains such as rye and gourds were some of the first plants domesticated for food.
Domestication is the cultivating or taming of plants or animals. It involves the culturing of wanted characteristics such as behavior (animals) or qualities like the location of food production (food). Early domestication of plants and animals occurred during the Neolithic era.
Characteristics of Early Settlement
Conditions for Human Settlement
Fertile soil for growing food
Fresh water for drinking
Mild Climate • Not too cold • Not too hot • Good amount of rain
• Not the desert
Location by a body of water that allows for transportation and trade
