EARLY ARRIVAL STUDENT COORDINATOR Arthur Martins (’22.5) (he, him, his) [email protected] Olá! Tudo bom? I’m Arthur and I’m a rising junior from Brasília, Brazil. At Middlebury I study Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies as well as English, which gives me a lot of reading and writing every term -- which is okay, I love it! Born and raised in Brazil’s bird-shaped capital, I have also lived in Germany for two years. I’m currently trying to teach myself the ukulele and always on the spree to find the perfect tea blend. I will be your Student Coordinator for Early Arrival for the next couple of weeks. So excited to finally meet all of you! PROGRAM ARRIVAL LEADERS (PALs) Abdul Hack Anas Abubakari(’23) (he, him, his) [email protected] Hello everyone. Firstly, on behalf of my fellow PAL leaders, I would like to say welcome to Middlebury. It is a great achievement to finally be here and you should feel proud. My name is Abdul Hack Anas Abubakari, but you can call me Abdul for short. I am from Kumasi, in the Ashanti Province of the Gold Coast, Ghana. I spent my high school years in Konya, Turkey and I never stop talking about how great and amazing those four years were. I’m majoring in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry with a minor in Global Health and, probably, music. I speak 7 languages, or at least that’s what I tell myself because there is French, which is intermediate for me but I still consider it to be a part of the 7. I still seek to be able to speak more and that’s why I feel proud to be enrolled in one of the best language institutions in the country to help, just like you all are now. I am also the new president of the UMOJA cultural organization and Co-President of the Muslim students Association on campus, which I’m so pumped about. I’m so excited to meet you guys and can’t wait to welcome you to Middlebury once more. See you soon! EARLY ARRIVAL STUDENT TEAM (2020)

Smith Gakuya(’23) (he, him, his) [email protected]

Hello friends, Karibuni Middlebury (Welcome to Midd). My name is Smith Muhuri Gakuya and I’m a sophomore majoring in the magical field of Computer Science with a minor in German. I was born in Mombasa, Kenya but grew up in the nation’s capital, Nairobi. Some things I really enjoy are telling exaggerated stories about how I shredded some of the “steepest” roads in Vermont on my longboard, contemplating the meaning of life and busting random dance moves in the course of my day. This academic year I will be serving as one of the co-presidents of the International Students’ Organization (ISO), which I am super excited about. I’m so stoked to meet you guys and can’t wait to see you all soon! :)

Rena Gao (’23) (she, her, hers) [email protected]

Hello everyone! I am Rena and I’m a sophomore from Chengdu, China (the city with the best spicy food although my spice tolerance is embarrassingly low). I have absolutely no idea what I will major in yet but hey, life is nothing but uncertainty am I right >.< I spent two years of high school in North Carolina and two in Wales (UK), and then took a gap year before coming to Midd! I love learning new languages (if you are also interested in French or Italian, hmu!), literature, films, being in nature, exploring Vermont with my bike Hummus, taking dance classes at Midd, but most essentially having deep conversations with a cup of tea <3 I remember how nervous I was arriving at Midd last August, it’s

totally normal if you are feeling uneasy! But please know that you are all so welcome here and I am very excited to get to know you ;))

Blair Jia (’23) (he, him, his) [email protected] Hello everyone and welcome to Middlebury! My name is Blair and I am a sophomore from Toronto, Canada. Although I have lived most of my life in the great white north, I spent my last three years of high school at a boarding arts school in Boston, Massachusetts. At Midd, I am double majoring in Computer Science and Economics. On campus, I am a proud member of both the Middlebury Choir and the amazing acapella group, The Dissipated Eight! You can often find me in the practice rooms of Mahaney singing my heart out or in the nooks of BiHall taking a nap. I am so excited to welcome you to campus and look forward to getting to know all of you! See you all very soon!

Elsa Korpi (’22)

(she, her, hers) [email protected]

Hi all, my name is Elsa and I’m a junior studying political science and Russian. Home for me is somewhere between Helsinki, Berlin, and Hong Kong. This summer my life has revolved around writing, coffee and the LSAT, but on campus you can find me in upstairs Proctor or racing against the print deadline in The Campus’ newsroom. Fun fact about me: one time I got caught in a storm during a rowing trip and had to seek shelter in an old monastery. You’re all superstars for making it this far – stay safe and see you very soon!

Mai Thuong(’22) (she, her, hers) [email protected]

Hi friends! my name is Mai. I’m a junior majoring in French & Francophone study, minor in Dance. I spent most of my life with my grandma, running in my bare feet in a small village in northern Vietnam. Education Cupid hit me and brought me to Norway for two years, and since then I’ve backpacked in Sweden, Nepal, India, and Tibet, till I came home ripped and realized that I should go to college before getting too old. On campus, I keep my feet moving as part of The Dance Company of Middlebury, learn to stay open-minded through Language in Motion, and become involved in Social-Entrepreneurship change-maker cohort. I’m glad that we will soon share part of the Middlebury memory together somehow. The next few years will be rough, but “you have

been assigned this (Vermont) mountain to show that it can be moved”. Congrats, I’m glad that you are here, and I genuinely can’t wait to see you :)

Nina Ng (’23) (she, they) [email protected]

Hi everyone! My name is Nina Ng and I’m a sophomore from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Having grown up in Shanghai, I’m largely accustomed to metropolitan life; Vermont is a real change of pace for me. Here, I intend to double major in Economics and Film. I’m part of the International Student Organization (ISO), play violin for the orchestra, and write for the Middlebury Campus. Pre-quarantine, it’d be no surprise to find me following the film circuit, looking for screenings. As such, I like to think of myself as a playlist curator, avid reader, and cinephile (surprise). I’m looking forward to meeting and welcoming you to Middlebury this coming semester!

Françoise Niyigena(’21) (she, her, hers) [email protected]

Hi friends! My name is Francoise Niyigena, from Rwanda. I am doing a double major in Neuroscience and Psychology with a minor in Education studies. My biggest passion is working with and empowering young people, so I am so thrilled to be part of your college journey in whatever capacity. At Middlebury some of my favorite things are hanging out with friends in Ross dining hall (that feels like my little home :)) sledding down Midd Chapel during the winter, watching the trees change colors in the Fall, and really getting to know all these amazing people at the college. I am very involved with the experiential learning centers on campus such as the Innovation hub and Center for Community Engagement, am a BOLD Women’s fellow, Social-Entrepreneurship change-maker and heavily involved with student leadership. My advice for you: Middlebury is the kind

of place with all sorts of opportunities, and I mean anything you can think of, so ask for help and I can assure you, you’ll find exactly what you need. I am so thrilled to meet you all and to be able to support your college journey in whatever capacity.

Assadou Nzigamasabo (’22) (he, him, his) [email protected]

Hi everyone, congratulations and Welcome to Middlebury! My name is Assadou Nzigamasabo and I am from Rwanda. I am a junior with a Computer Science Major and a potential minor in either math or religion. I am involved in Umoja, which is the African Students Association on campus. I am also involved with experiential learning, particularly the Social Entrepreneurship Fellowship. In my free time, I enjoy biking, hiking, playing Go (an ancient chess-like game), and movies. I am terrified of snakes and any creature that crawls. As you settle in this new environment, I encourage you to branch out and explore different opportunities available to you. Make connections and learn to take advantage of them. I am confident you will enjoy your time here.

Sabrina Roberts(’21) (she, her, hers) [email protected]

Hi everyone, my name is Sabrina and welcome to Middlebury! I grew up in Hong Kong and graduated from high school there, but also have roots in the US and Canada. I am a senior International Politics and Economics major here at Midd and during my junior year I studied abroad in Rwanda. Apart from academics, I have been involved in a bunch of extracurriculars on campus. I work as a research assistant at the Rohatyn Center for Global Affairs and serve on the Rohatyn Student Advisory Board, I played junior varsity soccer, I am on the mock trial team and I mentor a 9-year-old girl from town through the Community Friends program. I have had the best three years on campus so far and am so excited to get to know you all!

Seiha San(’22) (he, him, his) [email protected]

Hello! My name is Seiha San (he/him/his), a junior from the Kingdom of Cambodia. I am a Biology major and a Global Health Minor. On campus, I am a choreographer, treasurer, and member of the Evolution Dance Crew. I am also involved with UR-Stem (Underrepresented Students in Stem) as well the Interfaith House, an intentional living community aimed at fostering an environment for interfaith dialogues. I spend most of my time in the dance studio in Proctor Basement and Bicentennial Hall and the rest of the time doing outdoor activities. I work as an admissions assistant and box office assistant. I am also a student researcher and research assistant in the Biology department. I look forward to welcoming you all and providing as much guidance as I could for you to successfully navigate spaces at Middlebury. Congratulations!

Steven Shi(’23) (he, him, his) [email protected] Hi everyone! My name is Steven Shi and I am a sophomore from Beijing, China. At Midd, I will be majoring in Economics. On campus, I play intramural basketball, snowboard in winter and work as a campus tour guide. I really enjoy spending time in the beautiful nature of Vermont and eating good food with friends. I had a very fun early arrival experience last year and am very excited to meet you guys! Safe travels!
