What is EAGLE?

Enhanced Assessment of Grade-level Expectations

EAGLE is an online system for teachers and students that provides detailed feedback about student learning of GLEs.

Teachers and students are involved in assessment FOR learning so that the teaching-learning process can be adjusted at timely intervals.

How can Teachers use EAGLE?

• Create quizzes with items aligned to GLEs• Use a premade diagnostic test for pre and post assessment• Assign quizzes/tests to entire class or individual students• Communicate with students using the Message Center• Learn to score CR items with the Hand Scoring Tutorial• View immediate results for MC and some SA items• Analyze reports showing class and individual student performance• Link directly to instructional resources aligned to the GLEs• Make timely interventions to adjust instruction and students’ learning

throughout the school year• Use EAGLE as a tool to support formative assessment activities

5

Page 5: EAGLE Teacher Workshops

• Take quizzes/tests online to measure GLE-based skills

• Receive immediate results for MC and some SA items

• View meaningful reports showing actual performance compared to goal set by teacher

• Communicate with teacher using the Message Center

• Assess mastery of GLEs using the Student Self-assessment Report

• Learn to make adjustments to their own learning of the GLEs

What is Formative Assessment?

Formative assessment is a process used by teachers and students during instruction that provides feedback to adjust ongoing teaching and learning for the purpose of improving students’ achievement of intended instructional outcomes.*

How can EAGLE SupportFormative Assessment

Activities?

Student-friendly GLEs—help teachers communicate goals and expectations with students.

Student Reports—show students how they are progressing on each GLE tested and foster self-assessment.

Teacher Reports—inform teachers how individual students and the class as a whole are progressing on each GLE that has been tested.

Focused Instruction—Teachers may choose individual items to use during instruction as a means of integrating Formative Assessment into the daily learning process.

Seven Strategies of Formative Assessment

1. Provide students with a clear and understandable vision of each learning target.

2. Show examples of strong and weak work.3. Offer descriptive feedback on a regular basis.4. Teach students to self-assess and set goals.5. Design lessons to focus on one learning

target or aspect of quality at a time.6. Teach students focused revision.7. Engage students in SELF-REFLECTION, and

allow them to keep track of and share their learning.

How to create a Student-friendly LEARNING TARGET

GLE 27—Identify and plot points on a coordinate grid in the first quadrant.

GLE Student-friendly version: Plot and name points on a coordinate grid. (Student friendly GLEs are available in EAGLE.)

Word(s) to be defined: ‘coordinate grid’

Definition(s) of word(s) the student may not understand:A coordinate grid has two perpendicular lines, or axes, labeled like number lines. The horizontal line is called the x-axis. The vertical line is called the y-axis. The point where the lines cross is called the origin. (Show the students a picture with the x- and y-axes and origin labeled.)

Student-friendly learning target: Have students use “I am learning to …” statements: “I am learning to plot and name points on an x, y grid.”

Example: Grade 5 Math GLE 27
