Eagle Ridge Middle School 1 EAGLE RIDGE MIDDLE SCHO0L Dear Parents and Guardian, As we enter the month of March, I would like to share with you upcoming events. For our eighth grade students, we have the SOL Writing Test on March 8 th and 9 th . Please make sure that your child is here at school on time, as we begin testing at the start of the day. The make-up window is short so we try out best to have all students present on these two days. We are happy to announce that we have formed our first business partnership with Raytheon. We look forward to working with the company on support for our students in the area of math and sci- ence. In addition, we have access to the website, mathmovesu.com. Please take time to check on this link on the ERMS website. If you are a part of a business that would like to build a Business Partnership with Eagle Ridge, please contact [email protected]. Please save the date of March 22 nd for our first annual Fine Arts Night. This is an open house to our community to spend an evening listening to musical performances and seeing the outstanding visual art work of our students. The doors open at 7:00 PM. Parents, we need your support with our drop off and pick up lane. Please stay in line when drop- ping off your children or picking them up. There has been an increasing number of students walk- ing across the parking lot and drop off lane. As warmer weather approaches, please keep in mind the school dress code. We ask that all jeans and shorts are kept at the waist and to not fall below the hip line. Skirt and short length should be appropriate for the school setting. A good rule of thumb is that with your arms down to the side, the length of your shorts is equal to or longer than where the end of your fingers lies. All shirts should have at a minimum of a two inch. Camisoles and tank tops are inappropriate for the educa- tional setting. For a more complete listing of the dress code, please visit our website. Students ar- riving to school in inappropriate attire will be given a PE t-shirt or shorts to wear for the day. No phone calls home for replacement clothes will be made. “Myth Busters”…come spend an hour with the principal to talk about current issues, school proce- dures, instruction, grading, etc. Our first Principal’s Coffee will be Friday, March 4 th from 9:00- 10:00 am. We look forward to seeing your there. For continued up to date information, please check out our website as well as our PTO constant contact newsletters, and our weekly connect-ed phone calls and emails. If you are interested in serving on our School Improvement Plan, please contact me at [email protected]by March 28 th . Bridget Beichler Principal

Parent Tips: What Are Middle Schoolers Like?
As children grow, they begin to experience
physical, intellectual, and emotional changes.
The way they learn, feel, see the world, and
relate to other people becomes different from
when they were younger. These changes,
along with demands from present-day society
and peer pressure, create conflicts and tension
in the adolescent, which are reflected in their
behavior in school and at home.
Young people at this age show a good number of contradictions and conflicts, which is normal.
There is no "model" adolescent. All young persons are individuals with strong and weak points
and with positive and negative qualities. There are some common characteristics that should be
kept in mind in order to understand and help the middle schooler in daily activities at home and
at school:
Adolescents have high levels of physical and emotional energy, which may contrast with
long periods of idleness, generally disapproved of by adults.
They take risks, are curious, and love danger and adventure, yet their feelings can be hurt
easily. This is the time when they feel immortal, but they worry a lot about what their friends
think about them.
They want to be independent from their families, and at the same time, they need to be pam-
pered and protected.
They withdraw and want a private life, and at the same time, they worry about being ac-
cepted by their peers.
Eagle Ridge Middle School 16
They demand privileges but avoid responsibilities. At the same time, they are developing
an awareness of social problems and the welfare of others.
Adolescents from other cultures sometimes face an additional burden as they develop their
identities and try to comply with the requirements of home and school. On one side, they have
the values and customs of the home that the family wants to maintain, and on the other, they
have to respond to the demands of their peers and teachers, who have a different set of rules.
News:
If there is school closing or delay for inclement weather all conferences will be
cancelled. Please contact your grade level counselor to reschedule any conferences can-
celed due to inclement weather.
March 1st CAMPUS Presentation - CAMPUS is an academic and college preparation
program designed to meet the specific needs of students from historically underrepre-
sented groups in higher education and prospective first-generation college students in Lou-
doun County Public Schools (LCPS). A LCPS guidance initiative, CAMPUS began in the
spring 2002. CAMPUS seeks to provide support and encouragement to students
who demonstrate the ability to achieve academic success and college admission. Students
must commit to attending mandatory CAMPUS meetings and/or classes during the school
day and to attending CAMPUS activities throughout the year. Parents are also an integral
part of CAMPUS and its success. Parents are expected to participate in CAMPUS initia-
tives and support their children in the college search and application process. Admission to
and graduation from college are among the goals of CAMPUS Program. Please contact Ms.
Badger for more information regarding the current campus application process.

Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest
Each year, ERMS students participate in an essay contest
sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). This
year’s theme, “Does Patriotism Still Matter?” inspired students to write about
their personal beliefs on patriotism in our country. Thirty-five students submitted
essays for judging to our local sponsor, the Sterling VFW Post.
Bill Atkinson and other representatives from the Sterling Post came to Eagle
Ridge on February 23 to present certificates to all participants and to especially
recognize four of our students whose essays won the first four places (out of five)
for the local level. Congratulations to Tim Bushman, Will Gorick, Eleni Papa-
george, and Lily Chaw.
Thank you to all students who participated in this important event this year!

This year, Eagle Ridge formed a new committee in order to create business partnerships.
We are looking for businesses in our community who would like to partner with our school, in order
to best serve our students.
If you own a business or know a business that might be interested, Eagle Ridge Middle
School would like to invite your business to become a partner with our school to positively impact
the lives of our students! Our school community consists of over one thousand students, over one
hundred staff members, and thousands of parents and community members. It takes the com-
bined effort of our school community along with local businesses to create a complete learning
environment for the students of Loudoun County.
How can your business help our school? Eagle Ridge offers three levels of partnership to
create a bond between our students and local community businesses. We also are interested in
businesses that would like to present on career or curriculum related information. These partner-
ship levels include:
SILVER: Donation of Goods- (i.e. complementary meals, business coupons, store items,
etc.) to students as a community business gift. These are given to students at quarterly
award nights recognizing academic and character achievement.
GREEN: Purchasing a “Business Card”- ($100 per quarter/$400 per year). Your dona-
tion is used to purchase educational supplies (i.e. literature books, instructional supplies,
student awards, etc.). These 2’ x 3’ signs are displayed at all nightly events which allow
the school community to recognize your commitment to Eagle Ridge.
GOLD: Technology Grant- a cash donation of $500+ for the purchase of technology
items. Some examples of items that may be purchased are printers for the laptop carts,
a new laptop cart, document cameras (elmos), flip cameras, IPods for podcasting, and
many more hardware options.
If you are interested in participating with Eagle Ridge at any level, please contact Nikole Mullen,
