The 2014 turned out to be one of the most difficult and frustrating track seasons in recent history.

The wind, cold weather and meet cancellations played havoc with the season. Thursday night proved

to be as equally challenging. The girls track team traveled to Grimes, Iowa to compete at DCG in

District 2-3A State Qualifying Track Meet. The meet had two weather delays and finally finished on a

cold wet track. The girl’s team was led by Gabbie Richards who qualified for state in the 100 and 200

meter dash, and Emma Bowman also qualified in the 400 m hurdlers! Congratulations to these young

ladies on a job well done!! The state meet will run May 22nd thru 24th.

The Saydel boys track team is heading

into the final week of the season. The Eagles

have had two meets last week and one the

previous Friday night as well as the Heart of

Iowa Conference meet and 3A State

Qualifying meet since the last entry in Eagle

Express. Others have been cancelled due to

weather including a home meet, away to

Bondurant-Farrar, and away to Ballard. Two

weeks ago the Eagles were at Grimes taking

8th place in a tough field of 11 teams. Monday

the 5th they ran well taking 4th place as a team at CMB’s invitational in Baxter, and they were 4th again

a day later at Chariton. Along the way, more personal records have been set. The athletes continue to

perform at a high level and drop times and lengthen distances. They gave more of the same at the Heart

of Iowa Conference meet and District meet this week.

Notable performances over the last couple weeks include Casey Roberts

setting a personal record in the 3200m run at Grimes in a time of 9:59.47.

He set a personal record in the mile the following Monday in 4:36.51.

David Parker set a season best time in the mile at Chariton in 5:08.84.

Clayton Sommers set a personal record of 15.48 in the 110m high hurdles

at Baxter. Across the board, runners and throwers appear to be peaking at

the right time. Tyler Stocker threw a season best 126-06.50 in the discus

on Monday, while Dylan Coffin jumped a personal record 18-06.00 in the

long jump on Tuesday. The team built on these fine performances as we

entered the home stretch of the season.

The Conference meet hosted by North Polk and held in Alleman was a

great challenge that the Eagles embraced. Overall the team finished 8th in

one of the best and most competitive track and field conferences in the

state. This is better than the 9th place finish of a year ago. The guys battle

some weather to run well on the night.

Thursday’s district meet was hosted by DC-G and held in Grimes. The

Eagles were able to send multiple qualifiers in multiple events to the state

meet held at Drake Stadium May 22-24. Clayton Sommers started the

night off for the Eagles with a 3rd place finish in the high jump. His effort of 5’10” was enough to get

into the field of 24 at the state meet. He will jump Thursday May 22 at 2:00pm in Drake Stadium. Next

Casey Roberts took home the District title in the 3200m run in a time of 10:18.31. He will run that

even on Thursday May 22 at 3:50pm. Clayton qualified his second event in the 110m high hurdles

taking 2nd in 16.04. He will run that event Friday May 23 at 5:00pm. Casey took home his 2nd victory

of the night in the 1600m run in 4:45.41. He will run that even on Saturday May 24 at 1:45pm. In the

400m low hurdles it was Sommers again qualifying after winning the race in 57.30. Finally, Roberts

qualified in his last event, the 800m run, with a time of 2:03.30 and will run that race Saturday, May

24, at 10:30am. Congratulations to the two Saydel boys’ team qualifiers! I would also like to take a

moment to congratulate the girl qualifiers Gabbie Richards in the 200m dash and 100m dash and

Emma Bowman in the 400m low hurdles. It was a great end to a strong season for them. Finally, well

done to all track participants this year, and good luck to the participants at the state meet next week!
