Life with Christ: The Commandments The Fourth Commandment

“Honor your father and your mother” (Deut 5:16; Mk 7:10). 2248 According to the fourth commandment, God has willed that, after him, we should honor our parents and those whom he has vested with authority for our good. 2249 The conjugal community is established upon the covenant and consent of the spouses. Marriage and family are ordered to the good of the spouses, to the procreation and the education of children. 2250 "The well-being of the individual person and of both hu-man and Christian society is closely bound up with the healthy state of conjugal and family life" (GS 47 # 1). 2251 Children owe their parents respect, gratitude, just obedi-ence, and assistance. Filial respect fosters harmony in all of family life. 2252 Parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children in the faith, prayer, and all the virtues. They have the duty to provide as far as possible for the physical and spir-itual needs of their children. 2253 Parents should respect and encourage their children's voca-tions. They should remember and teach that the first calling of the Christian is to follow Jesus. 2254 Public authority is obliged to respect the fundamental rights of the human person and the conditions for the exercise of his freedom. 2255 It is the duty of citizens to work with civil authority for building up society in a spirit of truth, justice, solidarity, and freedom. 2256 Citizens are obliged in conscience not to follow the direc-tives of civil authorities when they are contrary to the demands of the moral order. "We must obey God rather than men" ( Acts 5:29). 2257 Every society's judgments and conduct reflect a vision of man and his destiny. Without the light the Gospel sheds on God and man, societies easily become totalitarian.

[They] were being baptized by [John] in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins (Mark 1:5). The first step of conversion is repentance. As we see in the gos-pel this Sunday, St. John baptized people as they acknowledge their sins. Yet, they were not yet saved. Many can say they are sinners, but unless they turn to the Lord they are not saved but doomed to remain a sinner. When Christ arrives on the scene, he brings a baptism of conver-sion. A baptism in which the baptized becomes a new creation, from a creature of God to a son/daughter of God. So while John calls us to repent, Jesus calls us to conversion, metanoia. We need a new heart, not an old one of stone but a new one of uncorrupted flesh. A heart that not only repents, but recognizes God as his Father. God is the Father that forgives his child. God is the Son that converts his brother and sister. God is the Holy Spirit that sanctifies man, removing the stain of origi-nal sin that once condemned us to death and now restores us to life eternal. The day we were baptized, we became a member of God’s holy family. We came to share in the divinity of Christ as he hum-bled himself to share in our humanity (see the words of the Ro-man Missal as the priest adds water to the wine). When those people came to John to repent, they retained their mark of origi-nal sin, but as we are baptized into Christ Jesus in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, we are no longer bound by the judgment of Adam and Eve, but are now just in the eyes of God. Today we live in a world where many of our brothers and sisters have forsaken their baptism and have opted for the world. Imag-ine you have just started a new job. It pays very well. Yet you are offered a retirement plan that will cut your salary in half but nonetheless give you a contented retirement. Imagine that you decide in your limited wisdom to opt for the greater salary. You can’t be bothered to think about the distant future. You are liv-ing in the moment, for the now, and the high salary makes you feel important, successful, and popular among your friends and family. Of course when you get old you’ll be broke and if your child or someone still loves you, you might be taken care of and saved from a living hell. It seems to be this way with the faith. We have been offered eternal life through baptism, but it requires that we live a life of conversion but many have only chosen to live a life of satisfac-tion, pleasure, comfort, and human glory. They live in the pre-sent as if there is no final judgment. So sad! Their only hope is that someone in the future will care enough for them to invite them back to Christ. My brothers and sisters it is up to us. We must be the ones on which our fallen away brothers and sisters can rely. It is never too late to convert or revert to the loving embrace of God. Let us be there when they call on God. Let us hear their cries for hope and listen to their moans for God’s forgiveness. We must be prepared to do God’s work for we do not know when someone will have a change of heart and desire his love and live out his baptism.

Making Those Funeral Arrangements Planning or even thinking about one’s own funeral is un-pleasant and therefore something we tend to push far out of our minds. When the time finally comes it leaves the family stressed and overwhelmed by all the decisions they must make. You can relieve some of this stress for your loved ones by planning your Funeral Liturgy (Mass of Christian Burial). Lynn Berhalter would like to assist you in choosing the Scrip-tures to be read at your funeral Mass according to the archdi-ocesan guidelines. She can also help you choose the hymns that will add to the solemnity of your Mass. This is simple to do and it helps fulfill your wishes and eases your families’ burden. Make an appointment to see Lynn at the rectory to get started. Your plans will be kept on file at Holy Trinity Church and may be amended anytime if you wish. Planning ahead ensures your family that the readings and music you desired are carried out and they need not worry. It is a beautiful final gesture, a gift to those who grieve. Call 201-343-5170 now and make your appointment.

Vida con Cristo: Los Mandamientos El Cuarto Mandamiento

“Honra a tu padre y a tu madre” (Dt 5,16 ; Mc 7,10).

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
