To extend the aircraft's range, its interior fuel tank was enlarged. This modification required an 86cm lengthening of the fuselage. Onboard fuel storage capacity was extended even to the vertical stabilizer. The resulting increase in aircraft weight extra fuel loading necessitated more power than the engine used on the standard Hornet could provide, and the engine change is evidenced by the larger, more rectangular air intake on the Super Hornet. The wings were lengthened and wing surface area enlarged to increase lift. Outside of these extensive airframe modifications and minor tweaks of onboard electrical system and avionics, systems on the Super Hornet have been kept as interchangeable as possible with the original F/A-18C/D. The EA-18G Growler is an electronic warfare version of the F/A-18F Hornet fighter. Since 2010, the Navy has needed a replacement for the dwindling fleet of its aging electronic warfare workhorse, the EA-6B Prowler. As an efficiency measure, it was decided to base this replacement on an already existing aircraft type, in this case, the proven F/A-18F. The prototype of the new aircraft flew on August 16, 2006, and the first aircraft went on line with Naval Aviation units beginning September 22 of the same year. In January 2007, the aircraft passed a battery of tests at the Naval Aviation Combat Center flying with the AN/ALQ-99 tactical jamming system. The first production models were used for crew training with squadron VAQ-129 on September 24, 2007, after which the type went into regular service. Essentially, the EA-18G is fitted with the same electronic jamming, defensive, and accident prevention gear used with the EA-&B(ICAPIII), that is, the AN/ALQ-99 tactical jamming system and AN/ALQ-218(V) wideband receivers, with the addition of new enemy communications jamming gear. Even the onboard Vulcan cannon is equipped with electronic measures. The aircraft can deploy the AGM-88 HARM anti-radar missile as well as the AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air in underwing ordnance positions.
