A Critical Metric for Projector Buyers

otherwise known as Color Light Output

Page 2: E4 Dallas 2014: What is Color Brightness

Image quality varies

greatly among

projectors with the same

or similar specifications

All projectors are NOT

created equal

Optics

Since only one color is

created at a time, much of

the light energy is wasted as

it reflects off the color wheel.

Only one color is displayed at a

time.

The images rotate quickly so the

brain perceives full color

To offset the loss of light, DLP makers use a white segment

to boost lumens.

However, this reduces Color performance.

If you’re not seeing a

Color Brightness Spec

You’re only getting half

the story.

Why the dramatic

difference?

A key reason is Color

Brightness

Buyers were asked about

image quality, projector

selection and Color.

Consumer Research showsshoppers are in the dark…

Fact: Manufacturers offer higher brightness specs for better prices year over year

Consumers are trained. Buy as many lumens as the budget can afford.

Brighter is better.

of shoppers incorrectly think that lumens tells them the brightness of color

79%It doesn’t. Traditional Brightness metric only measures WHITE

Although COLOR is critical….

Page 17: E4 Dallas 2014: What is Color Brightness

Imagine buying a car….

Without knowing the City AND HWY MPG

• Current Specs give no info on COLOR

• “Brightness” only measures White Brightness

• Buying based on just White brightness is like only looking at the Highway mileage

Page 18: E4 Dallas 2014: What is Color Brightness

Projector buyers don’t realize they aren’t getting what they pay for.

A new spec is likely to change their minds

Page 19: E4 Dallas 2014: What is Color Brightness

Worldwide Color Spec New display industry standard

An expert panel conducted extensive scientific analysis of projectors

and revealed a major differences in color brightness performance.

Such a big difference that color brightness (color light output) is now

measured and listed separately.

The spec standardizes the way to measure Color Light Output

Applies to all projectors (that accept an RGB input signal)

Reveals true brightness of colorful images…not just a white test pattern

Gives consumers important and not previously available information to

make an informed decision.

Compare for yourself www.colorlightoutput.comWhite Brightness obtained through Projector Central, as specified by the manufacturers. These manufacturers do not provide Color Brightness (Color LightOutput) data. Color Brightness was determined in compliance with IDMS 15.4 by 3rd party laboratory testing of a single unit of each model.

Fact: Widespread. Color Brightness may be as little at ¼ of the Lumens stated

Summary

All Epson Projectors have High Color Brightness

3LCD projectors have HIGH Color Brightness

3LCD Engines have no color wheel

3LCD engines don’t force a tradeoff between white and color brightness

All Epson projectors list both White Brightness & Color Brightness specs

Epson projectors have 3x brighter colors1 than leading competitors

1. Compared to leading 1-chip DLP projectors based on NPD data, July 2011 through June 2012. Color Brightness (Color

Light Output) measured in accordance with IDMS 15.4. Color Brightness will vary depending on usage conditions.
