Introduction

Information about ZUKEN E3 GmbH

CIM-Team, which was founded in 1987, will operate under the new name ZUKEN E3 GmbH (www.zuken.com/e3) as of April 2009.

ZUKEN E3 creates intelligent CAE programs for use in the areas of

Electrical Engineering

Electronics

Cabling

ZUKEN develops CAE software products, which are being used world-wide for design and documentation purposes. ZUKEN maintains excellent working relationships with international companies in the areas of electrical, electronic and machinery manufacturing, using their feedback to implement the latest industry requirements into its software products. CIM-Team has the integrated software solutions for many requirements, such as the design of circuit diagrams, drawing and wiring panels, designing electronic circuits, as well as creating circuit board layouts. These products are used in the automobile and supply industries, and can be used, for example, to transfer data from electrical engineering to hydraulics and pneumatics. ZUKEN keeps in close contact with its affiliates throughout the world, who are responsible for marketing and support in their respective countries.

Overview of the E³.series Modules

E³.series software consists of several, different modules. All modules work with the same data kernel, which allows data and information to be shared between modules.

E³.series software has been designed specifically for the Windows® operating system, including Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

In E³.series, the symbol and component databases form the foundation, on which everything else is based

E³.series mod.ules are used to design, create, modify and check the electrical, electronic, hydraulic and pneumatic design and associated documentation.

Starting the Program

To start E³.series, use the:

Windows Desktop Start Symbol

After installing E³.series, the E³.series logo will appear on your desktop.

Windows Start Menu

After being installed, E³.series is integrated into the start menu and can be started with Start -> Program -> CIM-Team -> E³.series.

The interface appears the first time with the standard settings and then returns the next time with the settings last used when the program was ended.

Double-click on this logo to start E³.series.

Demo Version

If a valid license is not available when starting E³.series, the Demo Version will be used. Use of the Demo Version must be confirmed by the user.

Note:

A project, that was saved using the Demo Version, can only be opened with the Demo Version.

When exiting a project that was opened using the Demo Mode, the following warning will be displayed!

E³.series and Windows Terminology

Terminology used in E³.series

E³.series uses recurring terminology, which is summarized in the following table:

Nr. Term Explanation

1 Project Defines an E³.series project, which consists of one or more sheets as well as OLE objects.

2 Object-oriented E³.series manages objects. These are, for example, devices, symbols, connectors, blocks, connections, graphics and text.

An object is used only once in a project and can be displayed in different views.

3 View Different representations of an object.

For example: terminals in the circuit diagram and as a terminal plan

4 Sheet Drawing area, on which symbols, graphics and text can be placed

5 Component Exists as a physical device.

6 Symbol Graphical display of a component or a part thereof

7 Device A component used in a circuit that has been assigned a device designation.

8 Attribute Additional information that can be assigned to an object

9 Dialog Menu, in which the user can input data that will be processed by E³.series

10 Subcircuit (Part) Subcircuits, which may contain devices, symbols and connections, can be saved in the database.

Windows Terminology in E³.series

9 Drag & Drop Press and hold the left mouse button on the selected object so that it can be moved.

Cut & Paste

Copies the selected object in the clipboard (Copy) and then inserts it on another sheet or in another program (Paste).

Cuts the selected object (Cut) and saves it in the clipboard and/or inserts it on another sheet or in another program (Paste).

User Interface and Command Elements

User Interface E³.series is a pure Windows application, which makes it simple to learn and easy to use: Drag & Drop, Pick & Place, Cut, Copy & Paste, OLE, and don’t forget Undo/Redo. Everything you know from other Windows programs can be used in E³.series.

After starting and opening a project in E³.series, the user interface is arranged as follows:

1 - Main Menu

The main menu contains all of the commands available in E³.series Commands are combined in groups and displayed as pull-down menus The main menu cannot be switched off

2 - Project Window

The project’s hierarchical design is displayed in the form of a tree structure in the Project Window in E³.series (can be individually furnished).

Tabs represent the three object classes, which appear in the Project Window. They can be used to switch between areas.

3 - Database Window

All Components and Symbols in the database are displayed in a tree structure in the Database Window.

They are sorted by the attribute Main Class.and Database Class English

4 - Preview Window

The Object currently active is displayed in the Preview Window. This can be a sheet’s contents (zoomed area), circuit diagram symbol or panel symbol.

5 - Sheet Window

The project’s sheets and documents are edited in the sheet window(s).

The Sheet Window, like other Windows applications, can be changed through the title bar:

Normal mouse functions

- Drag & Drop the title bar - Click on the pushbuttons in the title bar

Context menu (called up using the window symbol in the upper left-hand corner) Hotkeys

6 - Output Window

All program-related information is displayed in the Output Window.

The output window is divided into different areas. These areas can be displayed using the tabs:

7 - Status Bar

Current settings and other important information are displayed in the Status Bar.

8 - Toolbars

Several commands can be grouped together in a Toolbar. The individual commands are displayed as Icons on the toolbar.

Toolbars contain the most important commands for creating or modifying drawings. By simply clicking on an Icon, the corresponding command will be activated.

9 - Main Window

The main window displays the working area in E³.series. All other windows are displayed within this window.

The individual sheet windows are displayed and edited in this area.

10 - Device Table

All used devices are contained in an Excel-like table. Modifications to the device designations can also be carried out here.

Command Elements in E³.series

Commands can be executed through menus, the keyboard or mouse.

Keyboard

Keyboard inputs can be carried out using Hotkeys as well as directly through the Main Menu.

The main menu is activated using the ALT-key. The Cursor keys can then be used to navigate within the menu.

Once the desired command is highlighted in the menu, the ENTER key is used to execute the command.

If a hotkey is available for a command, it will be displayed alongside the command in the pull-down menu.

The drop-down menu can be closed with the ESC-key. To switch from the main menu to the schematic editor, press ESC once more.

Defining the Mouse Buttons

The mouse is the main input device in E³.series.

E³.series supports a three-button mouse. To select a command, place the cursor on the desired object or menu item, and click the appropriate mouse button. The individual mouse buttons have different functions.

Standard Mouse Button Functions:

Object-Oriented Context Menus

A context menu is available for every object in E³.series. Context menus are activated with the right

mouse button.

Context menus contain commands for modifying the corresponding object.

The selected object’s properties can be changed in the lower part of the context menu.

Main Menu: File

Description:

After starting E³.series, a new or an existing project can be opened.

New projects always receive the name untitled. A file will be generated on the hard drive with the name untitled.e3s. If such a file already exists in the project, a number will be affixed to the file name.

When closing a project, the modifications will not be saved!

With the command Save as ..., a copy of the current project will be created under a new name. This project can then be edited.

A project file contains all the data required by the circuit diagram.

The project name is displayed in the Project Window and the Title Bar in E³.series.

If a new sheet is opened, a dialog window appears, in which the Sheet Format and Sheet Name can be entered.

Description:

Existing sheets are usually opened in the Project Window.

Open sheets can be minimized or maximized in the Main Window and listed in the main menu Window.

With the keys

Page down / up (go to the next sheet / previous sheet)

Home and end (go to the first sheet / last sheet),

the corresponding sheet will be opened in the current window.

Opening several sheets simultaneously:

1) Mark the first sheet. 2) To mark additional sheets or

the last sheet, press the SHIFT key (for an area) or CTRL key (for individual

sheets). 3) Select the command Open in

the Context Menu.

Note: Use the same procedure to close

several sheets.

The respective sheet can be opened or closed by simply clicking on its check box. Open sheet

Renaming Sheets / Exchanging the Sheet Format / Adding Sheet Text

Main Menu: Format Sheet Properties

Context Menu: Called up through the sheet window or project window

Description:

The modifications are carried out through the Sheet Properties but the sheet must be selected in the Project Window.

Sheet properties can be changed in the dialog window.

The Sheet Name can be changed in the Project Window with the function key F2.

!! The location (in the project window or on the sheet itself), in which the sheet properties are called up and changed, is irrelevant. The modifications take effect immediately on the sheet and in the Project Window!!

Arranging Sheet Windows; Opening Additional Sheet Views

Main Menu: Window

Description:

Sheet windows can be displayed as overlapping (Cascade), one below the other (Tile Horizontally) or side by side (Tile Vertically) in the main window.

Once a sheet has been opened, additional views of this sheet can be opened. The user can view the complete sheet in one window and the same sheet zoomed in another window. Modifications are displayed immediately in all sheet views.

Main Menu: View

Context Menu: Sheet

Description:

Enclose the area to be zoomed with a rectangle in the Sheet Window. Click on the starting point and while pressing the middle mouse button, drag the mouse to enclose the area and then release it.

These menu items are only active if a sheet has been opened.

The complete sheet is displayed in the Preview Window. The area zoomed is enclosed by a rectangle.

To enlarge or reduce the area zoomed, click and hold the left mouse button on the rectangle’s lower right-hand corner in the Preview Window and move it back and forth to change the size.

Moving the Display Detail (PANNING)

The zoomed area can be moved in the preview window by pressing and holding the left mouse button on the rectangle.

The zoomed area can also be moved using the sheet window’s scrollbars.

Dynamic Zoom

By holding the <Ctrl> key and moving the “mouse wheel“ forward a so called dynamic zoom is executed and the cursor’s position defines the centre of the Zoom area.

Description:

By clicking on the desired sheet, this resets the display window.

This menu item is only active if a sheet has been opened.

The complete sheet will be displayed in the preview window and the rectangle disappears.

Description:

Switches the placement aids on in each sheet window.

Rulers Red indicators display the position of

the crosshairs. The display is in mm or inches.

The arrow keys can be used to move the crosshairs in

the working grid.

Global Settings (Sheet, Grid)

Description:

The viewing grid can be defined through the dialog Settings -> Display.

The smallest Working Grid/Viewing Grid unit is 0.1 mm or 0.001 inch (= 1 mil)

Pressing the <Ctrl> key activates the Alternative Grid.

E³.series is an object-oriented E-CAD system. All symbols and components are stored in a database, which can be either symbol-oriented or component-oriented. This results in the following questions:

Symbols

A symbol is a graphical symbol, which displays the device’s function in the circuit diagram.

Symbols are stored in the database.

Symbols consist of four basic elements:

graphics pins (nodes) text types (These positions can be filled in automatically or by the user.) attributes

Symbol Types

standard symbols (NO, NC, etc.) sheet symbols (sheet formats) signal cross-references (sources, destinations)

Component/Device

Components exist as physical devices. A device is a component that has an item designation. Components are stored in the database. A device contains one or more symbols. E³.series manages a device’s elements automatically.

A device consists of three elements:

one or more symbols an item designation attributes

Text Types

Text nodes are reserved for system and user-defined information (e.g. pin name).

Symbol Graphics

The graphics can be on different levels and

Component types differ in function and the way they are displayed in the circuit diagram. E³.series manages these elements, such as their device designations, defined contacts as well as references between the contact arrangement and a relay’s contacts. Based on this component functionality, we must distinguish between the following component or device types:

Searching and Loading Components/Symbols from the Database

Components and symbols can be loaded from the database and then placed on a sheet. A component search can be configured to find the desired object more easily.

Placing Components/Symbols on Sheets

There are different ways to load components from the database and place them on a sheet. This can be accomplished using:

Description:

As soon as a component is placed, it automatically receives a device designation. The device designation is unique throughout the entire project. The device along with its affiliated symbols will be inserted in the Project Window under the Tab Device. By using either drag & drop or the context menu, additional symbols can be placed.

left mouse button.

Device Tree Devices are managed in the Project Window. Unplaced (available) contacts

are displayed in yellow, while those that have been placed are in blue.

Unplaced symbols in the device tree can be placed on a sheet using different means:

Display Device Table (Change Device Attributes similar to Excel Table)

In order to be able to configure used devices before drawing a schematic, the device information (names, properties, component codes, attributes) can be displayed and maintained in a concise table dialog.

A device is described in each row. The display (which properties, which columns, how the table is sorted) can be defined by the user.

If you make changes to the symbol or device properties, they will have different results. Generally, modifications to the device properties affect ALL device symbols (all symbols having the same device designation). Modifications to the symbol properties affect only the selected symbols.

Description:

There are two delete functions. Cut deletes the device from the sheet and simultaneously copies it to the Clipboard. If the command Delete is used, the device is deleted only on the sheet. In both cases, the device has not yet been deleted from the project. The device will be stored in the device window as unplaced (free) and can be used later in another location.

If a device is deleted in the project window, it is removed from the project.

The Delete command is used to delete devices that do not have any elements (e.g. relay contact, panel symbol) placed in the project.

With Delete Forced devices can be removed from the project even if individual graphic elements have been placed.

To delete unused objects, the Purge Unused Objects command in the Device Tree context menu can be used to delete ALL devices (EXCEPT terminals), which have no graphic elements placed.

A cross-reference can be displayed between the elements of an assembly in the schematic. The reference can be from the assembly part of a numerically lower sheet (or conducting path) to an assembly part of a numerically higher sheet (or conducting path).

Dynamic Symbol

Main Menu: Insert

Description:

Dynamic symbols are defined in the Project as rectangles (not in the database). They have a device designation and can be assigned pins (symbol type Pin Template).

Additional symbols can be placed within. Their pins will be recognized as belonging to a Dynamic Symbol and will be evaluated in the connection list.

The appearance as well as the text template to be used has to be defined in the settings.

Placing Terminals

Terminals are special component types that can be selected and placed from either the Database or Project Window. If they are placed from the Database Window, a new device designation (new terminal strip) will be generated. If Insert Terminal from the device tree context menu is used, then new terminals will be generated within the terminal strip. By using drag & drop or “Place“, a new terminal symbol from the same strip will be placed in the circuit diagram.

Level Selection

General Information

All schematic objects, including connect lines and supplementary graphics, can be arranged on up to 256 different levels. Sometimes, it is extremely useful to be able to switch specific levels on or off before outputting to a printer, for example, when working with multilingual documentation or different graphics.

Connections

General Information

Electrical connections are used to define which component pins will be connected and what properties these connections will have. Pins can be displayed in different ways in the drawing; therefore, several different connection types are necessary:

Individual Connections (default) This type of connection is used to connect individual pins and carries a signal.

Individual Connections without Signals Connect individual pins but carry NO signal. Imagine these unnamed connections as being made up of 'non-conducting' materials. This type of connection will also be used for a "complete connector" or in displaying a cable harness.

Cores Physical cores can also be used to connect pins that carry signals. They override both individual and unnamed individual connections.

Multiple Connections connect at least all selected pins of a symbol per rubberbanding with pins of another symbol in one step and possibly direction change and the option to create a folded connection line

Generating Single Connections

Diagonal Connections (Forced Wiring)

With the SHIFT key, diagonal connections can be generated during inserting connections.

Change from Normal Wiring to Forced Wiring

To change from normal connections (T-connection) to forced wiring connections, there are two new commands available:

Incline clockwise Incline counter clockwise

in the “Connections” toolbar.

Procedure:

1. Select the desired command, either “Incline clockwise” or “Incline counter clockwise”, (double-clicking causes the command to remain active – abort with ESC key)

2. Click on the T-connection line segment,

Routing Graphical Connections and Cores (Conductors) / Wires in One Step

When routing a graphical connection, a defined wire can also be automatically routed.

There are three options available for this in the dialog under Settings -> Connection:

Deleting Connections

A connect line can be deleted in two ways:

- deletes the connect line including the signal on the line and on the connect pin or

- deletes just the connect line (corresponds to the DEL key).

Handling Connectors

Placing Connectors and Connector Pins

Connectors can be placed in the project as a complete connector, in pin groups or as single pins. The pin groups can be changed at anytime during the design phase.

The connector, displayed in E³.schematic, can only be placed as individual pins.

The desired connector in the database tree can be placed through the context menu Place (the complete connector can be placed using a connector symbol) or Place Single Pins (all of the connector’s individual pins).

The menu item Place as Graphic places the defined symbol as documentation graphics in the component database. Place as Symbol affects the placement of pin or socket symbols without being assigned to a component.

Unplaced connectors in the device tree can be placed as a "complete connector" or placed as individual pins.

Inliners

An inliner is a plug connection inserted across the wires of a cable set, which results in a second cable set being automatically generated.

With E³ it is possible to place a connector with a defined mating connector in a connection. This results in the defined mating connector being generated and placed in the plugged state. E³ behaves the same when placing from the database tree or the project tree.

An Inline Connector can also be inserted by the context menue on selected connections in the schematic or on selected cables, conductors and wires in the Device Treeview

Views:

The drop-down list displays all graphical connections that are connected in project. <none>

means that no views are selected nothing is graphically disconnected.

Formboards:

The drop-down list displays all formboard sheets that are to be disconnected.

Component:

Select the component of the inliner. The drop-down list only shows connectors, that have at least the same number of pins as the selected.

Symbol:

Places the defined symbol under

Settings -> Placement -> Symbol -> For connectors without component.

The example shows the selection direction -X1, thus the selected inline connector is placed in direct connection to –X1, whereas the mating connector is placed on the side to –X2.

Placing Master Symbols

A connector can have a master symbol containing cross-references showing where the individual connector symbols are placed. The master symbol (can be both the master symbol as well as the documentation graphic) is placed using the device tree view:

Changing a Mating Connector

A connector’s valid mating connectors are stored in the component database. The desired mating connector must be selected before being connected. A mating connector cannot be modified once it has been connected.

The mating connectors are predefined in the context menu Device Properties under the tab Pins. All defined mating connectors are displayed in the list.

The same is true when modifying a connector pin terminal.

Special Settings for Connectors

If the pins of a component are assigned to different connectors and the connector pins each have the corresponding pin attribute .CONNECTOR_NAME, the connected

connector name can be created automatically as follows Device

Designation/Separator/Connector

name.

If, for example, the pin attribute .CONNECTOR_NAME=X32 is connected to

component A31 and the option is active

and defined as the Separator to use, the connector name of the connected connector is A31.X32.

This option defines whether the mating connector pin is to be executed via the pin order or simply via a name.

If the Try to assign pins via names first option is active, the system first tries to assign pin names to the mating connector pin. If this is not or only partly possible the pin order is considered.

If a mating connector is generated, it receives the HLA/Location of the affiliated device.

The mating connector’s device designation is a combination of the block’s device designation and the block connector’s device designation along with the defined separator.

Block Functions

General Information

Blocks are functional devices. In connection with EDA-systems, it is possible to import a circuit board’s connector components with their adjacent signals.

A block, like a device, can be furnished with a device designation (as well as a location and higher level assignment). To display the device designation, the corresponding text nodes must be defined in the database.

Defining Blocks

A block design file can be adopted from a circuit board design by using the pushbutton Create from file. CADES-G data (DF, DFS, DFB, PDF) will be displayed there in a file selection window.

Block symbols can be defined in the database with fixed or variable graphics. After placing a variable block symbol, its size can be changed. To do this, select the block and while pressing the left mouse button on one of the points, adjust its size.

Blocks can also be defined as components in the database. These can then be supplied with block connectors. This structure, however, cannot be changed in the project.

Splitting Blocks

A functional block can be displayed as several individual blocks, which are used to document the individual functions on several pages. The function Split Block can be found in the context menu. The blocks automatically reference each other online.

Splitted blocks can be optionally displayed with a broken line (breakline) at one edge.

If graphics are bound to a block and the block is split, then the graphic will be displayed on both blocks.

Block connectors can only be placed on blocks. A block connector symbol must be defined for the connector in the database before it can be used as a block connector. The connector symbol is placed on the block’s border and later, moved along its border.

Hierarchical BlockDesign

Hierarchical design makes it possible to structure projects to any level of detail. Therefore, projects can be nested to any depth. Sheets containing schematics, panel sheets and so can on be hidden behind hierarchical blocks.

Hierarchical Tree Structure

The Sort sheets hierarchically option under the Sorting tab in the Tree Control Properties context mneu determines whether the tree view is displayed hierarchically or shall be structured. Views of structural blocks are displayed directly underneath the structural nodes in the tree view.

Generate Hierarchical Block and Sheets

A hierarchical block is generated using the ”Hierarchical Block“ option in the Block tab of a block’s Device Properties. Hierarchical blocks are displayed in gray.

By right-clicking on a hierarchical block, which presently contains no sheets and selecting the

Using Hierarchy Ports

Hierarchy ports are used as interfaces between the pins of the hierarchical block and the circuit part, which is represented by the block. This means connections lead from the hierarchical schematic through the hierarchical ports to the "outside".

Signal Cross-References

General Information

Sheet references can be generated from sheet to sheet within E³.series. Special symbols are available for this.

There are four different types of symbols contained in the Signal Reference folder in the Database Window Misc tab. For every "Source Symbol", there exists a corresponding "Destination Symbol”. Together with the same signal, the cross-references will be generated from sheet to sheet.

SOURCE_* / DESTINATION_* (star)

A source symbol can refer to several destination symbols. The corresponding signals/reference symbols will be "manually" defined under Sheet References in the context menu.

SOURCE_DIRECT / DESTINATION_DIRECT (Point-to-Point)

For every source symbol, there is exactly one destination symbol. The destination will be "manually" assigned.

This is a special type of Point-to-Point Connection. Cross-references will be written and modified automatically, for example, when a sheet is inserted.

Handling Cables and Cores

Assigning Cable and Core Definitions (Dynamic Cables and Database Cables)

Cables are treated like components, i.e. they can be loaded from the database window and inserted into the device tree using Insert Cable in the context menu.

The cable can be loaded from the Database Window into the device tree.

From there, the individual cores can be placed on connection lines using Drag & Drop

or by dragging a placement line on the connection, or through the context menu

Special Functionality using Single Wires

Single wires are treated like components, i.e. they can be loaded using either the Insert Wire Group context menu in the database window or Insert Wire in the device tree, and from there, placed in the same manner as cores.

With the Connect Wires command, a wire can be placed by clicking on a connection (corresponds with using Drag & Drop in the plan).

By dragging an intersecting line (horizontal or vertical) across the connections, the respective wire type can be placed on all the connections.

Connect Wires Continuously functions in the same way as the Connect Wires command so long as the same wire type is being placed. It can be used on single connect lines or several using an intersecting line until the function is aborted.

This mode remains active until Esc is pressed or the command is aborted in the context menu.

Furthermore, the Connect with wire command can be used in the database tree to generate a graphic connection with the selected wire in one step. This command is only active for wires of wire groups in the database tree.

Free Graphics and Text Main Menu: Insert Graphic

From the Graphic menu drop-down list, additional graphic elements can be inserted into a drawing:

Line Click on the starting point and while holding the left mouse button, draw a line.

Polygon Establish the starting point and direction changes. To close the polygon, double-click on the last point’s position. If the last point defined is identical to the first, then the polygon will be closed.

The right mouse button displays a context menu, which contains the following commands: Abort (to abort the command), End (last point), Close (for closing the polygon) and Point (to insert a point and continue the command).

An existing polygon can also be modified:

Rectangle Click on the starting point and while pressing the left mouse button, draw a rectangle.

Circle Define the center and while pressing the left mouse button, define the radius.

Curve

Select the start point with click and release the left mouse button and than click the subsequent input points along the desired curve. To change the shape of a curve right-click on it to display the context menu and select the Edit points command, move or delete one of the points that create the curve

Oval Define the first point and then by holding the left mouse button, establish its size.

Arc Establish the arc’s center and then its starting and endpoints (Radius).

Textbox

With a text box the maximum width and height of multi-line text can be dynamically displayed.

Ballooning

All text, except for fixed symbol text, can be defined as ballooning text. This takes place in a project when inserting comment text or through the Text Properties.

Display subsidiary lines to owner can also be used to indicate that lines should be drawn to the owner. These lines (with arrows) always display the shortest distance between the balloon’s border and the owner object.

E³ is Unicode-compatible.

Because Unicode allocates a unique number for every character, E³.series can be used with any language.

On-line Terminal Plan Main Menu: Insert Terminal Plan

General Information

A terminal plan displays all of the terminal strip’s connections and pins. It is nothing more than another view of the circuit diagram. Therefore, all modifications to the terminal plan will be updated immediately in the circuit diagram and vice versa. It only has to be "activated" once for a terminal strip.

Calling Up Terminal and Cable Plans

These settings can be saved as project-specific in Settings Placement Terminal Plan. The settings defined here are valid for all terminal plans generated immediately thereafter. Already existing plans are not affected by these settings.

Write only unique connections in the terminal plan.

Outputs the wires used in the terminal plan.

Display only user-defined signals.

Generate terminal plan with all devices (not terminal components).

All connections to terminal pins with the same name are combined.

All connections of pin view symbols are also displayed.

Plan: Establishes the starting sheet name, the sheet format to use and the appropriate "Table Symbol", which contains the terminal number, external and internal destinations, and so on.

Terminal Strip: selects the terminal strip to be edited.

Sort by: determines the sorting criteria to be used for the terminal strips.

None: no procedure; uses the sequence in the device tree

Pin name: according to the terminal number

Cable: Cables that are connected to the terminal strip will be sorted by their device designation. The terminals will then be sorted based on the order the cores appear in the cable description.

Placement: The sheets will be sorted in ascending order first and then according to their terminals’ X/Y-coordinates. Different sorting options are available.

Jumper: The rows are arranged so that the jumpers will be clearly displayed in the plan. (Jumper blocks are displayed together.)

Jumper: Specifies the type of jumper

Jumpers by Connections: Terminals, which are connected with one another, will be displayed as jumpers.

Jumpers by Attributes: If this option is activated, a jumper is placed on the core in the terminal plan by using the attribute "Jumper for Terminals".

No Jumpers: Jumpers not displayed.

In line: All graphically connected terminal connect points are combined (also by equivalent pins) and the sequence bridged. Therefore, it’s possible that a pin-to-pin bridge can be displayed in the terminal plan even though this exact graphic connection doesn’t exist.

Functions within Terminal and Cable Plans

General Modifications:

Terminal numbers, signals, device designations of targets can be changed through the context menu "Properties", whereby the modifications will be written back to the circuit diagram online.

Moving Lines:

Lines can be moved by pressing and holding the left mouse button on the line to be moved and then releasing at the desired position. The sequence will also be changed in the device tree.

Internal Allocation/External Connection:

Whether a device appears in the external or internal column, it is independent of the HLA/Location of the affiliated device or the attribute External/Internal Connection (attribute .EXTERN/.INTERN)

on the terminal connect points. If a pin is changed to external or internal in the terminal plan, the corresponding attribute on the pin will be written back to the circuit diagram. In the settings, this attribute can be made visible (switched on).

Displaying Cable Harnesses in E³.series

Handling Connector Views

For documenting cables and cable harnesses, E³.cable makes it possible for the user to create different views of the cable set. Therefore, the connectors must be defined in the database.

The function Place New View can be accessed through the connector’s context menu in the circuit diagram or device tree.

It can generate up to 99 connector views. The views are numbered.

All defined connector views in the database will be displayed in the menu under the symbol name and can be previewed before being placed.

A new view can also be generated for all the connectors in a cable set. The lowest possible view number will be selected for all of the cable set’s connectors. The Dialog Place New Connector View displays all of the connectors in a cable set one after another.

This function can be achieved through the cable’s context menu in the project window’s component view.

Note:

All modifications to such views in the circuit diagram will be updated online and vice-versa (e.g. changing the device designation, assigning cores, modifying attributes, etc.).

Component Views

Additional symbols for views can also be defined in the database for normal components.

e.g. the single pin display of a device (Topology Plan):

In the DBE this symbol was inserted using “Place as view“ and the pin assignment between the original and the view symbol already defined in the database.

There are two ways to generate views in projects:

1. Automatically

To automatically generate a view in the project, the Automatic Generate option must be activated in the DBE’s View Assignment dialog.

This enables the defined view to be generated automatically in the device tree as unplaced once the component is transferred to the project.

2. Dynamically

A view can also be generated dynamically. To do so, select the Place New Device View command in the device context menu:

Cable and Core Properties

Every cable and core can be assigned properties. The properties are divided into both ends (End-1 and End-2) and the cable or core body (Cable / Core).

These properties are assigned in the dialog Connection Properties in the Tab Cable/Core. The desired element is marked in the Preview Window, the position defined (End-1, Cable/Core, End-2) and the attribute to be assigned is selected from the attribute list.

Using Attribute Templates

An additional way of displaying attributes is to use them as display symbols. These symbols are defined in the component database with attribute text.

After placing such a symbol, the desired attribute will be displayed in the text node. This is especially important for connection attributes.

Connections, which involve attribute text and attributes, are defined in the text type table in the configuration database.

The attribute text symbol will be placed on the connection and the corresponding value displayed in the predefined location. The symbol can be moved or deleted.
