What is E-WasteE of e- waste stands for electronic so the electronic wastes are what e-wastes. Any electronic article which is a waste and of no more use or possesses no more value of its own is called E-waste.E-waste also includes any electronic article which though possessing a value or a use is destined for dismantling or land filling etc. This is because either they are surplus or they are no more accepted by the people because of the invasion of newer and developed technologies in the market. .
reason for the increasing e waste is the increased number of products (because of development, technology, human mentality and population) because of which disposal problems are caused as excess of anything is not good. the following are major causes-
There is not any particular technology invented specifically for dealing with the electronic wastes but for sure there is a need of evolution of such specific technologies and technological evolution which has helped the volume of e-waste to rise can also prove to be extremely handy for fighting this. Let us now have a look at the contemporary ways of dealing with it:1. Incineration: This is a thermal treatment technique
where the electronic wastes are treated with a very high temperature. 2. Landfills: Along with the solid municipal waste, the electronic wastes too are disposed to landfill sites where they are buried in the earth
.
3.Scrapyards : Most of the e-waste today, is sent to scrap yards. In these scrap yards e-waste is broken down into constituent parts.
E-waste TradeSo how did this E-waste Trade evolved? 1. The developed countries industrialized and were full of resources with plenty of job opportunities for the citizen.
2.On the other side, there was less resourcefulness and opportunities for people in the developing countries.
3.The people in the developing country soon realized that they can extract a few components out of the electronic wastes and that may serve their need.4. So now we can say that the e- waste
is no more waste but is a source of income of employment for these people.
5. as its (e-waste’s) demand in the market increased so increased its exports at international market.
There are concerns for those countries who are importing this waste as a large of these electronic wastes does not finds the right pathway to end up at a recycling or dismantling centre but also a large volume of e –waste ends up as a part of landfills alongside solid municipal waste.
2.Awareness amongst the people: Another thing that can be done is to generate more and more awareness amongst the people about the concern of e-waste disposal and provision of certain guidelines by the municipal organizations
1.Added Tax on electronic articles
3. Restriction on the imports of electronic wastes: The policies of the government should be such that it regulates the inflow of the electronic wastes from other nations. Along with this the government must look towards drafting special guidelines to counter such problems as that of electronic waste.
4. Increasing quality standards of the electronic articles so that they last long: By raising the parameters defined for the quality standards of electronic goods we can make sure that they last longer. There should be a continuous monitoring for these standards and also there is a need for organizations that come forward to fight against this concern.
Rules Spelling the end of unauthorised units handling such refuse, the E-waste (Management and Handling) Rules 2010 — drafted by the the Ministry of Environment and Forests to address the e-waste problem and to regularise the informal sector, which was notified last year — which came into effect across the country, including the Capital, on May 1, 2012.
Responsibility of each element in the e-waste Value Chain:• Producers – Extended/Individual Producer Responsibility• Dealers•Collection agencies/ collection Centres •Dismantler•Recycler•Consumer and bulk consumers
Procedure for Authorization of producers, collection agencies, dismantlers, recyclers and enforcement agencies
Procedure for registration/renewal of registration of recyclers Regulations for import of e-waste Liability of producers, collection agencies, transporter, dismantlers and recyclers Elimination of hazardous substances used in e-equipments Setting up of Designated Authority to ensure transparency,
audit and inspect facilities, examine authorization/ registration etc.
