Personal Statement

Hello everyone, my name is Tanya and I’m graduating this semester with my degree in psychology, I’m very excited because it has been a long journey for me. I’m 31 and I have a beautiful two year old son name Hayden. I dropped out of college when I was 22 and I did not start again until I was 27 and it feels good to say that I’m almost done for now. It has been a long road because during that time because my life has managed to go through many obstacles, this last year I was not sure I was going to get through everything and finish with going through a divorce and raising my son solo, but I’m managing the best I can and it looks like I just might make it. I will be the first one in my family to graduate from college, therefore this is very exciting for me and I can’t wait! I currently work with individuals with developmental disabilities and I would like to keep using my degree to further myself with in that field of work. Eventually when my son is of school age I would love to go back and continue my education with a Masters degree, but for now, one step at a time.

Reflection

During my time studying with Argosy University I have learned a lot about myself; number one no matter how busy I have been with working and family, I have learned that I can write three papers each week for the past three years, and anyone who can do that must be pretty intelligent. I’m proud of myself for the success that I have made and I hope to continue and show my son that he can be anything he wants to be in this life. I have learned a great deal about myself through the study of psychology, I’m wiser because of my schooling and stronger mentally because of school. I have also learned that I’m definitely not a math person and that I hate statistics. Through it all my strengths are that I am able to analyze and interpret my findings in an intelligent way. My weakness is that I procrastinate and do not organize myself well, something I need to work one in a great way.

Research Skills

In “I Can’t Live Without My Antidepressants!” the goal was to learn more about depression in the United states and how often antidepressants are being prescribed

Read various articles based on antidepressant's

Viewed various statistics about antidepressants and how often they are prescribed as well as looked at the reasons as to why they are being prescribed so often.

Reviewed thoughts about the usage of antidepressants from different intellectual walks of life, from the perspective of a doctor, writer, researcher and even a great wise mind from before our time.

I thought about my own issues with depression and my antidepressant usage as well, leading me toward wanting to know why I take them and if they really are working for me and if I really need them.

Communication Skills- Oral and Written

I spoke with other individuals who suffer from depression and are currently taking an antidepressant, I asked them a few simple questions.

1.) Do you feel that the antidepressant you are taking works.

2.) Do you think you need the medication or would work through therapy most likely help your issue with depression.

3. Are you sure the medication is working?4.) Did you ask your Doctor or did your Doctor

suggest the medication?

Ethics and Diversity Awareness

In my research paper I focused on the United States as a whole but feel that when delving deeper into the issue of depression, medication and treatment it is Important to focus on diverse backgrounds, history of depression, genetics, as well as financial stability.

Ethically it is important to be made aware and have an understanding of what other Ethnic groups are experiencing in order to research and treat psychological experiences of all divers backgrounds.

Foundations of Psychology

Many medical professionals are too quick in just prescribing antidepressant medication; to effectively treat the patient it is imperative to follow up regularly and offer other alternatives to the patients issues with depression such as therapy, and coping skills. More family Doctors prescribing medications should be sending patients to psychologically trained professionals rather than writing out scripts with little psychological follow up.

Applied Psychology

Applied Psychology is the use of a psychological professional for help with depression, a therapist or psychologist. If a family practitioner is prescribing pills they may easily prescribe therapy as well. It is important for the patient to learn coping skills as well as figure out the root of there depression and why it continues to affect and have a deep impact on their lives and relationships.

Interpersonal Effectiveness

Attend to the relationships in your life through not letting the problems build up, end negative relationships that are unhealthy for your growth and resolve conflicts before becoming overwhelmed.

Balance priorities and demands through asking for help when needed and learning to say no to people.

Develop your self esteem through demanding respect and respecting yourself.

Treat others in the way you want to be treated .Last, along with antidepressant medication if

needed, work on your self through help from a professional to guide you, listen, and help you find your path.

My Future in Learning

Like I have stated before I plan to continue with my education without stopping at this point. I remember though process 10 years and compare it with today and I’m a much wiser person than I once was already through education and life experience. When my child begins school and is at the age where I do not constantly have to watch over him I plan to continue with my masters degree, I plan to stay up to date with psychological research that interest me, I plan on furthering my job experience and learning on that plat form and I plan to work on my self emotionally as well through therapy, reading, and loving myself in order to become the whole person I desire to be.
