Council News More Activities resumed ... under the shadow of pandemic ...
Two months of schooling under the new pandemic situation – lucky that there are no serious issues in schools. We hope this trend could be maintained for the year 2021-22. And, you could check that there are more SME activities resume in this mailpack – the DigiScience, Chemistry Olympiad, Biology Literacy Award, Maths Teachers induction, .... (most applied online at www.hkasme.org)
Most news items will link with the HOT global issue of “Climate Change”. The COP26 (UN Conference) will be held from 31/10 to 12/11/2021 in UK, this affect everyone on Earth. Would you mention this to your student and / or even encourage them to do something within your subject activities? You may even share your experience (activity report or lesson involved) with us in the year through this mailpack or our yearly Teachers’ Journal by sending your notes to us via email. Living with the pandemic, one needs to be patient for delay. Eventually, we have the Chemistry ICQ (previously named ANCQ) results back in October and the Office works very hard to have all certificates and related documents packed for School collection. The delayed results is due to pandemic with some regions have the ICQ run lately (and India [with high participation every year] is missing from this round of statistics). From the overall global participation, Hong Kong should be proud to have a very high rate (around 3000) amongst all regions. For actual results, the top scorers (ALL correct) still maintain high (around 80 this year). However, the overall average results drop a bit. This is in line with the trend that we (our Science Assessment Test last year) and other research organizations have discovered that during the pandemic, the top students could maintain their standards while others (especially the mid- to low-achievers) have their academic standards dropped! Some teachers even phone up the Office asking if the results are alright and we could only answer that the report is a real fact! So, teachers need to alert their teaching strategies in how to make up for virtual learning (less face-to-face teaching), especially for those who are weak. Such students really need alternative learning strategies and more stimuli and feedback should be given to such students. . Another common situation is that when new activities are posted, teachers are more eager than before to fill up the places in most cases. So, we could only remind teachers to apply as early as possible to maintain places for yourself and your students. Keep an eye on the WWW and check frequently.

Due to the pandemic, cancellation of the routine activities for the year had stirred up a lot of enquiries (over phone / email). Eventually, the subject committee has come up with this new competition which encourage students to think about science and our daily life issues -- “A science story about vaccine”. New recycle processes for Car Lithium Batteries.
How could chemistry help in combating climate change? Any stimuli from the COP26? Would you alert your students about the COP26 and / or uses of batteries in our daily life?
e-vehicles will be more popular as Hong Kong has agreed to reach carbon neutral in 2050. Green energy strategies are to be followed and thus more waste lithium batteries are to be handled in coming years!
At present, Hong Kong has not enough formal recycle facilities to handle the increasing number of car batteries (whether it be old "lead batteries" or the new "lithium batteries"). According to the UK, a tsunami of electric vehicles is expected in rich countries, as car companies and governments pledge to ramp up their numbers – there are predicted be 145m on the roads by 2030. But while electric vehicles can play an important role in reducing emissions, they also contain a potential environmental timebomb: their batteries. By one estimate, more than 12m tons of lithium-ion batteries are expected to retire between now and 2030.
Lithium-ion batteries could save the planet from petrol-driven cars, but do the batteries themselves live up to their sustainable reputation?

Mail Pack Nov 2021 / p. 14 The ICQ is a unique chemical education activity. It provides a major focus for secondary
school students on the relevance of chemistry in an exciting and stimulating way. The RACI invites all students to participate in the ICQ.
The ICQ aims to promote interest in chemistry and the role of chemists in our society. The ICQ is not a nationwide assessment of chemistry knowledge, but rather an opportunity to promote chemistry and for teachers to gauge the understanding their students have of the subject.

Hence, this is a very good and easy administrated quiz that bring insights about the students' learning potential in the subject. ALL questions are MC (30 in total). ALL questions are syllabus-free -- that is, most ask for comprehensive skills with basic chemical principles (one of the 21st C skills that STEM would like to develop).
Students could choose their own set of paper for the competition. That is, a F.3 student could take a paper at F.4 level. This also serves as one award that students could be used for JUPAS.
Past Papers are available from the HKASME Office --- just

The Hong Kong Chemistry Olympiad for Secondary Schools is a project learning competition jointly organized by the Hong Kong Association for Science and Mathematics Education (HKASME), the Hong Kong Chemical Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry. It aims at promoting the interest of students in learning Chemistry and developing students’ problem solving, communication and science process skills through project learning. Details of the Olympiad are given below:
Theme Chemistry of alcohol (醇.化學)Participants Each team comprises three to five Secondary 3-6 students and each school can present a maximum of two
teams of students to compete in the Olympiad. Rules for the competition
(a) Students will design and work on their own project in school. The project should include experimental work.
(b) Each team of students should write up a report to give a concise and well-ordered account of their project including the objectives, an abstract of not more than 200 words, principles, experimental methods, presentation and interpretation of results, discussions, conclusions and references.
(c) No school logo or name should appear on any works, otherwise participants will be disqualified.
(d) The Competition consists of two rounds. A preliminary screening based on the written reports and all presentation materials will be conducted. The best 6-10 teams (approximate) will be invited to attend the Final Round Competition.
(e) During the Final Round Competition, each team is allowed to give a 10-minute presentation, including a maximum of 7 minutes to report their project and 3 minutes to play the video showing their experiment. After each presentation, there will be 7 minutes for the team to respond to questions raised by the panel of judges and the audience. The softcopies of PowerPoint, video, report, abstract and summary should be stored in a CD-R and submit to the HKASME before the Final Round Competition.
(f) If finalist teams participate in other competitions, they should notify the organizing committee as soon as possible so that proper arrangement could be made.
(g) Students can only use either Chinese or English in their project report/website and presentation. Mixed mode of both languages is not allowed.
(h) Schools will be responsible for the production costs of their projects.
Adjudication The panel of judges comprises representatives from the organizers. All projects will be judged according to the following criteria: (a) whether the project is relevant to the theme of the Olympiad, (b) whether the chemical principles described are sound and whether the methods used are reliable, (c) whether the project describes a novel but significant experience and can be used or applied in other
areas, (d) whether the presentation is clear and convincing, and (e) other criteria as deemed appropriate by the panel of judges. The preliminary screening will focus on the quality of projects. The final adjudication will focus on the overall performance of the team on the day of the final round competition.
