What is our air filled with?
Atoms…? Molecules…? or Data…?
When was the last time you made a call to someone? Have you ever wondered how such a hefty
voice data could be transferred over a long distance seamlessly? Okay, let’s not talk about corded
telephones. Let’s get in the trend and be more technical and more specific. Yes, I’m talking about
something which made communication and also our life easier and smarter, SMARTphones. The space
for such a proliferating technology was created by something called Radio Communication, which just
gave a new phase to the field of science and technology.
Radio communication uses radio waves of the electromagnetic spectrum to carry information.
Artificially generated radio waves are used for fixed and mobile radio communication, broadcasting,
radar and other navigation systems, communications satellites, computer networks and innumerable
other applications. We, Homo sapiens have escalated beyond Marconi’s wildest dreams, from spacecraft
to smartphones to machines talking to other machines and now we end up with IoT. Yes, it’s IoT
(Internet of Things). The next big thing in the information technology, which most entrepreneurs and
tech enthusiasts consider as the technology of the future. IoT is a networking platform where hundreds
of thousands of devices are connected to internet which enables them to collect and exchange data.
With all these innovations, with the demand for wireless communication steadily increasing,
now the million dollar question is What is our air filled with? Atoms…? Molecules…? Or Data…? I could
actually listen to all your half sure mind voices.
Of course, it is Data. Take a look around at the next college cultural fest you attend. You’ll see
so many students snapping photos and videos and sharing it on social media. Those armies of
smartphone users are contributing to a striking increase in wireless data usage. All these data are
transmitted through radio spectrum. Intuitively, there’s a catch with that because only certain
radiofrequencies are really good at transmitting data, and vastly more frequencies are reserved for
other uses, from television and radio to aviation and military applications.
Think of the radio spectrum which carries these data, like a highway. You keep adding more
and more data that makes the traffic get snarled, and what do you do? You can’t make the highway
any wider than it already is. This is what some experts are calling the spectrum crunch. So, does that
mean sharing a photo or a video would take 20 minutes in near future?
P a g e 9
I know, this just makes you feel that all those jaw dropping technologies projected in sci-fi movies
would just remain as a nightmare. Not at all, cheer up amigos. Scientists across the globe are working on
this problem to avoid the spectrum crunch in a little creative and innovative ways like cognitive radios and
ambient backscattering.
Cognitive radios use a transceiver which intelligently detects used and unused radio spectrum and
instantly moves into vacant channels by avoiding occupied channels thus resulting in uninterrupted flow of
data. Ambient backscattering solves the problem of spectrum crunch by leveraging existing cellular and TV
transmissions rather than generating their own radio waves. Coming to the alternatives, the present talk of
the tech town is Li-Fi which uses light waves to transmit data instead of radio waves. It is observed that the
entire spectrum system is managed inefficiently. If this unorganized usage of spectrum continues, apparently
in 2040 while sending even a text message you’ll end up by getting a warning “WARNING 909:There’s no
enough space in the air to send your message, please try again after some days or just go to some other
planet”.

An Outlook on The Major Development of Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical Engineering has knocked the doors of innovation constantly for past few years. Some major ones
are set to change the whole scenario of Medicine & health care around the world which is very important in
today’s society .One of the major disease that affects us is cancer .Studies have shown that one out of three
individuals develop cancer at some point during their life this isn’t to say we’re not making progress. More
people are beating cancer today than ever before and half the people diagnosed will survive their can-
cer .Camera pill is one such device used to diagnose esophageal cancer.
What if swallowing a pill with a camera could detect the earliest signs of cancer? The tiny camera is de-
signed to take high-quality, color pictures in confined spaces. Such a device could find warning signs of eso-
phageal cancer, the fastest growing cancer. The esophagus is the section of digestive tract that moves food
from the throat down to the stomach. With the invention of this camera pill it became possible to spot the
earliest signs of cancer. The device was developed with the goal of taking quality. The pill has a width of an
adult fingernail and is twice as long and there is no need of anesthesia and sedation
V o l u m e 2 i s s u e 1
Wondering how such a large pill with a camera can be swallowed? Here is your answer A
fundamentally new design has created a smaller endoscope that is more comfortable for the patient and
cheaper to use than current technology .An endoscope is a flexible camera that travels into the body's
cavities to directly investigate the digestive tract, colon or throat. where each part of the camera captures a
different section of the image.
Curious about how it works? what it does? Once swallowed, an electric current flowing through the
endoscope causes the fiber to bounce back and forth so that its lone electronic eye sees the whole scene At
the same time the fiber spins and its tip projects red, green and blue laser light. The image processing then
combines all this information to create a two-dimensional color picture .Scientists say that it is a very easy
procedure that can be done anywhere
Like every instrument the camera pill has its own share of advantages and disadvantages the advantage is
obviously its size and the disadvantage of wireless capsules is they only allow a single fly-by view, its cost
and and once swallowed we have no control over it.
Although such great inventions mesmerizes us ,its cost is enormous. Wondering how much? certainly not
affordable by everyone, so next time you intentionally do something that causes cancer like say light a ciga-
rette hopefully this makes you think twice.
