E-Newsletter PRINCIPALS REPORT 5 August 2020 Even in the midst of a global pandemic, the Kiara College community has been working hard to ensure that students are safe, supported and engaged in their learning. While many social and cultural extra curricular activities were postponed, the academic program continued, with a combination of online learning, work packages and face to face classes. Students have been able to maintain a connection with their teachers and the learning program. Analysis of the recent reports indicated most students had maintained their level of achievement and made good progress. It is particularly pleasing to see students demonstrating commitment to their learning by engaging with the additional supports, such as before and after school tutoring and even holiday study programs for our Year 12 ATAR students. We will be celebrating student achievement in Semester One, at a series of assemblies during week 4. This will ensure that we meet the COVID-19 social distancing requirements, yet still be able to invite parents and carers to join us. We have been very fortunate in being able to work and learn in a safe environment. We recognise the efforts of all staff and students in following good hygiene practices, but particular thanks must go to both our dedicated cleaning crew and the office staff who managed to source essential items such as sanitiser at critical times. Our partnerships with community groups and programs such as Altone Youth and Girls Academy enabled provision and delivery of care packages to some of our students, which were gratefully received. Thanks also to our more IT savvy staff who assisted others to navigate the intricacies of WebEx and other platforms to facilitate learning and staff meetings. While a bit more low tech, the scanning, photo- copying, collating and postage of hard copies of learning materials required a mammoth effort from staff, and we have to acknowledge the commitment and dedication of our EAs and office staff who coordinated the actual production.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

5 August 2020

Even in the midst of a global pandemic, the Kiara College community has been working hard to ensure that students are safe, supported and engaged in their learning. Our new normal school routine now allows for a greater variety of social and cultural events and the Student Services team have been quick to capitalise on this. From staff versus student volleyball matches, to positive programs such as the TRG anti-bullying; from a new engagement program for Years 7 & 8 to Year meetings, teen mental health training and a host of Act, Belong, Commit activities; the Student Services team have been leading the way in building both resilience and a sense of belonging for our students. They have been ably supported by the Careers team who implemented the first Kiara College Careers Week expo which looks set to become an annual tradition. It provided a great lead in to the subject counselling sessions recently completed. Staff have introduced new activities such as the Chess club and a volleyball competition, and old favourites such as the Dr Yes program have returned. A highlight for Dance students, was the honour of being the first excursion post COVID-19, where they visited WAPPA and had three days of fantastic skill building.

The most significant negative impact of COVID-19 has been the effect on student attendance. Prior to COVID our attendance was extremely good, exceeding even our ambitious targets. Since the expectation in WA that all students return to school, we have struggled to return to the previously very good figures. Additional support from the region will enable us to increase support for students finding it difficult to come to school. If this is your child, expect a visit or phone call from staff in the near future to discuss how we can work together to improve attendance. It is important to remember that 90% attendance and above is considered regular attendance. Less than 90% attendance puts students at risk of not achieving their potential

I’d like to thank all staff for their support during the Principal’s absence especially our new Associate Principal, Jodee Vause, who looked after Senior School for me while I was Acting Principal.

Kaye Stevens Associate Principal

BREAKFAST CLUB

This week Kiara College had some special guests come along to their daily Breakfast Club.

Two Officers from the local Kiara Police Station with some donated sausages from Woolworths came along and cooked breakfast for both students and staff. It was a great morning where we had the opportunity to chat in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. We are hoping to make this a regular event to strengthen our links with the local community.

AROUND THE SCHOOL

APPRECIATION - CLEANING STAFF

A massive thank you to the hardworking cleaning team at Kiara College, headed by Millie Pavlovic.

Their dedication during these trying times has been a testament to their perseverance and commitment in keeping our school community healthy and safe.

We greatly appreciate your efforts and would like to acknowledge your roles in our school. In recognition of their efforts we had a special morning tea, with appropriate social distancing, and also distributed some beautiful cupcakes.

HARMONY DAY 2020

Thank you to Mrs Neylon for coordinating the production of a school Harmony Day Banner. This year’s banner uses the colour of Orange to symbolise Harmony and the colours of the rainbow to symbolise inclusivity. The structure of interconnecting circles is inspired by aspects of traditional Aboriginal art. Staff and students had a great time making their mark on the banner.

TRY-A-TRADE PROGRAM

College of Electrical Training

Our students were a credit to the school as they arrived early for the commencement of their Electrical Program Day at CET Joondalup, showing beautiful manners and behaviour on the 30 of June 2020. The CET building is modern and impressive. The trainer for the day “Crispy” had many a story to tell and kept the students thor-oughly engaged throughout the day.

More students will be heading out to the campus later this year during August and September, for a taste tester to the Electrical Industry. Deciding to follow a career in this industry would set you up for life and give yourself amazing opportunities!!

More information can be found on their website. https://www.cet.asn.au/

Plumbing & Painting

A group of enthusiastic Year 10 students attended a 3 day MPA Skills Plumbing and Painting Try-A-Trade Program at John Forrest Trade Centre last month. Our students experienced hands-on-projects based on real work environments and received positive feedback and career pathway information for next year.

MPA Skills offers a Pre-Apprenticeship for those still attending school and who want to participate in the program during Year 11 and Year 12. The Certificate II qualification counts towards a student’s final results at school including the work experience component.

The Centre was built to be an environmentally friendly facility and has natural air flow ventilation in all training cubicles with natural sky lighting. Water is recycled from the roof through an enviro wash for removing paint pigments.

Try-A-Trade days will be advertised in CONNECT Careers site - so keep an eye out for more exciting opportunities!

WHITE CARDS

White Card is the common name for the ‘Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry CPCCWHS1001’ training course.

Holding a valid White Card means that you have completed official, certified general construction induction training with a registered organisation within Australia.

It is a legal obligation to complete this course prior to commencing work or work experience on a construction site. All trades require this card.

We had a record number of students complete their training on June 10, and all were outstandingly successful in passing the unit of competency and will receive a Nationally recognised certificate and card.

A fantastic addition to their resumes! Congratulations everyone!

DISMANTLE

A lucky group of students have been selected to participate in a youth development program called Dismantle.

Through this program, students have the opportunity to rebuild a bike for charity and one to keep. The aim of this program is to develop social skills, build confidence and connect to educational and vocational opportunities and outcomes through the use of bicycle mechanics and mentors. Upon completion of the course, students receive a grade which can be used towards their WACE results in Senior School.

As you can see below, students are engaging in this program, working hard to reassemble the bikes whilst interacting positively with each other, mentors and staff members.

VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING (VET)

Kiara College partners with Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) to deliver nationally recognised qualifications that are comparable to those delivered by TAFE Colleges and Private RTOs.

The advantages for students studying these qualifications at school are:

• No time away from school with classes to make up for other courses

• A full qualification is delivered by teachers who know the students

• A course will not be cancelled part way through due to a drop in numbers

• It is a cheaper cost than external TAFE Colleges and RTOs

NATIONAL CAREERS WEEK

Hatching chicks, a luxuriously soft white silky hen and “Shaun” the sheep were big hits with students. Kiara library hosted “Careers Week” with students invited to visit during recess and lunch. LOWER SCHOOL CHAMPION SCHOOLS BASKETBALL

On 14 August 2020 students from Years 7-9 will be selected to represent Kiara College in the Champion Schools Classic. This competition is of Round Robin format and Kiara College will complete against other schools in the north east education district.

CHAMPION SCHOOLS VOLLEYBALL

Kiara College has nominated to participate in both the Junior (Years 7-9) and Open (Years 10-12) School Sport WA Volleyball Competitions. These are one day carnivals to be held on Friday 28 August 2020 (Open) and Friday 3 November 2020 (Junior).

KIARA'LYMPICS

KIARA’LYMPICS (to be held on Friday 11 September 2020) has been a feature of the Kiara College calendar for many years. It is a blend of challenging and fun activities. Kiara’lympics provides the opportunity for the more athletic to perform and compete in a championship, and at the same time, caters for those who enjoy less competitive and fun activities.

The program is a whole school event that provides an opportunity to strengthen student affiliation with their Year groups and Houses.

An interschool athletics team is selected from the results. Selected students will represent the school on Monday 26 October 2020.

KIARA SURF 2020

The HPE Department at Kiara College provides students with a number of opportunities to represent their house faction (through our whole school beach and athletics carnivals) and their school (Champion Schools Sports, Lightning Carnivals, and Interschool Athletics).

On Friday 13 March 2020 our school beach carnival, Kiara’surf, was held at Mullaloo Beach. Kiara Surf involves each year group rotating around six stations with each station having a mixture of novelty and competitive events.

Kiara Surf is a ‘House Carnival’. It provides an excellent way for students to team build, and strengthen their association with their ‘House’, other students and the teaching staff.

At the end of the day’s competition, Centaurus was declared Champion House.

With COVID-19 restrictions lifting the Health and Physical Education Department are excited to announce that the following events are taking place during Semester 2.
