    Night Suppers

    will resume in

    the Fall.

    The Purpose of the Church

He works on us in all sorts of ways. But above all, He works on

us through each other. [People] are mirrors, or carriers of

Christ to other [people]. Usually it is those who know Him that

bring Him to others. That is why the Church, the whole body of

Christians showing Him to one another, is so important. It is soeasy to think that the Church has a lot of different objects ed-

ucation, building, missions, holding services. ... The Church

exists for no other purpose but to draw [people] into Christ, to

make them little Christs. If they are not doing that, all the cathe-

drals, clergy, missions, sermons, even the Bible itself, are simply

a waste of time. God became man for no other purpose. It is

even doubtful, you know, whether the whole universe was creat-

ed for any other reason. C.S. Lewis

    so much

    good!

    set the example for me.

4Help me to be strong and of a good

    courage when praying for missionaries

serving in hard places (Josh. 1:9). Guideme to pray not with timidity but with bold-

    ness.

5 When missions efforts in my life, my

church, my community, and beyond seem

impossible, remind me with God all things

    are possible (Matt. 19:26).

6 Father, thank You for women who were

and are willing to plant WMU work where

there is both hard ground and ferileground. Show me where I can be faithful

    to plant as well.

7 Lord, we celebrate Your call to missions-

minded pastors. Give them courage to

lead us outward and to call out Your serv-

    ants for mission service.

    Prayer GUIDE

    for 60 Days of

    Passionate

    Prayer

(7 to be listed each week)

1 Today I give You praise, O God, for Your

marvelous works in all things in all the

world. (Read Isa. 12:4-6. Name His works

in missions and thank Him as each one

    comes to mind.)

2 All praise to You, O Lord, for the gift of

Your Son Jesus, for it is in His name that

we do the work of missions in our hearts,

our homes, our churches, and beyond.

3 Than You, God, for working in the hearts

and minds of women in WMU history who

knew the importance of praying for mis-

sions. Than You for ________ (name) who

    Two ladies were praising

    the merits of their respective

    preachers. One said, "Our

minister is so wonderful. He can

preach a dozen sermons from the

    same text."

    Her friend then responded,

    "Why that's nothing. Our minister

is more wonderful still. He cantake any text in the Bible and

preach the same sermon from it!"

    Bible Quiz

Amos, a spokesman for the Lord, lived about

750 years before Christ. He wasnt a priest

and didnt serve in the Temple. Actually,

being a humble man, he didnt even considerhimself a prophet. He was a prophet, never-

theless. He spoke up for justice for the poor

and widows. He renounced the immoralactivities of many in Israel.

What word is omitted in this often-quotedstatement from Amos?

But let justice roll down like ________, and

righteousness like an ever-flowingstream (Amos 5:24, NRSV). Choose the cor-

rect word below to fill in the blank space.

    A. thunderB. lava

    C. pebblesD. waters
