Homes for earthquake victims unlikely before monsoon: NRA

Stating that post-earthquake reconstruction is a time taking process, authority’s Chief Executive Sushil Gyewali on Monday said: “It may sound unpleasant but the reality is that it is not possible to complete reconstruction of houses before monsoon.” Link:

Published on 12 March by Nepali Times IN RUINS: Homes destroyed in the 12 May aftershock in Manthali are still in ruins, and 200 families have been living in shelters for the past year on the banks of the Tama Kosi.The Red Cross Society was all set to start building houses for 100 families in Ramechhap, one of 14 districts affected by last April’s earthquake, when the government suddenly announced a temporary ban on reconstruction of private homes. NRA to allow NGOs in rebuilding homes

Published on 24th Feb By BBC Nearly a year after devastation by the Gorkha earthquake, the National Reconstruction Authority is set to engage non-government organisations in rebuilding houses. The NRA had temporarily barred the NGOs from helping families reconstruct their homes.The authority’s Directive Committee on Sunday endorsed guidelines related to the mobilisation of NGOs, reversing the past decision. Officials, however, said NGOs’ work would be thoroughly monitored. A separate guideline has been floated to manage the NGOs, said NRA Spokesperson Ram Thapaliya. They would be involved in post-quake reconstruction following its endorsement. Link:

Recent Earthquake UpdatesThere were a total of seven earthquakes above MI 4 and one of MI 3.5 recorded by National Seismological center this February. Among them 6 were the aftershocks of Gorkha earthquake in April with epicenter at Sindhupalchok, Gorkha and Nuwakot while a fresh one with the MI 4.5 was recorded with the epicenter at Sankhuwasava on 23rd of February. The Construction of 152 Temporary Shelters are completed, 13 are remaining. The construction of 90 water tanks has been completed, 75 are remaining. The construction of 84 toilets have started and the structures are erected, 85 are remaining. Additional 4 pits have been completed by the end of January. TSO Team is supporting and monitoring different NGOs funded by Fondation de France. By doing site visits, the team is able to provide assistance and advices concerning technical construction.

CTCF is planning to construct 9 collection centers and training hall in 8 VDCs in Lalitpur and 1 VDC in Ramechap.

The TSO team carried out the site visited at four more locations, Kaleshwor VDC, Chandanpur VDC, Gotikhel VDC and Chaughare(Bukhel) VDC Lalitpur.

Fondation de France visit to Nepal

The Director General of Fondation de France, Francis Charhon and International Solidarity and Responsible Emegencies, Martin Spitz visited Nepal from April 13,2016 to April 20, 2016. They visited various reconstuction project sites funded by Fondation de France namely Khokana, Thagpal valley, Helumbu, kiul, Koshidekha and Bhaktapur. Seminar on Timber in Construction

Technical Support Office(TSO)- ASF Nepal and A&D supported by Fondation de France successfully organised Seminar on Timer in Construction held on April 7, 2016 at Alliance Francaise Nepal Hall, Tripureswor, Kathmandu.A total of 100 participants attended the seminar along with guests like “His excellency, Yves Carmona” , Ambassador of France to Nepal, Prafulla Man Singh Pradhan, Advisor- UN-Habitat. The participants were from Fondation de France funded NGOs, other parties in contact with Fondation de France, network of parties involved in the reconstruction (NGOs, government, media, researchers, architects) etc. Media persons from Spaces Magazine, Aarthik aviyan and Business age also took part.

Jagaran NepalCommunity Centers

- 4 district, Kavrepalanchowk, Sindupalchok, Dolakha and Ramechhap

TSO conducted site analysis visit in 1 of 4 proposed site and provided them with the design, drawings and the cost estimates of the community center. Jagaran Nepal has got the approval for the construction of 1 community center at Mahadevstan VDC in Kavrepalanchowk District with FdF with the extension of budget. VDC office and women cooperative has commited for the contribution of 10% and 20% of the project cost.

The construction of the community center is in the final stage. The structure has been completed. Stone wall up to sill level has been constructed and timber planks is used above sill level. Doors and Windows has been installed.

The construction activities has started. The Steel Structure has been errected at the site.

Community Centers- Helambu VDC and Kiul VDC in Sindhupalchowk

Sindupalchok Activities: The re-construction of physical infrastructure have started. Although the construction of all the irrigation canals are not completely finished, 4 irrigational canals have been opened for the planting season. The construction of school toilets have started. Road protection and Land protections works have also started.

Participatory Plan: The activities for participatory planning for the communities of Thangpaldhap, Thangpalkot and Gunsa, were conducted from 14th March to 3rd April. The idea was to understand the needs, possible solutions, and development requirements of the community. During these activities, the team of TSO and ARSOW social mobilizers, interacted with the community and the selected earthquake victims.

ARSOW (ASSOCIATION for RURAL SOCIAL WELFARE)TSO Sindupalchok Activities

- Gunsa, Thangpaldhap and Thangpalkot VDCs

The construction activities of permanent latrines in health post in Kosidekha VDC, Kavrepalanchock District, has been complete as per the design and drawings provided by TSO.TRIANGLE GH-ARSOW is now constructing drainage around the permanent latrines.TRIANGLE GH-ARSOW is also ammending some changes in the 8 temporary latrines as per the recommendation provided by TSO.

TSO team conducted site analysis of all 3 sites and recommended to look for alternative sites in Muralibhanjang and Nalang VDC of Dhading district as the site were steep. NACCFL proposed to construct multi-storey community center with RCC construction since the community do not want to look for alternative sites. TSO cannot provide the technical support because TSO's objective is promote same local architecture with use of local materials which can
