2020 Energy & Environment Highlights

Advancing employee engagement by growing the UHN Green Team to 731 members

BACKGROUND ON ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT AT UHNAt UHN, we know climate change is a major threat to human health. Since its inception in1999, our Energy & Environment team has guided UHN to embed environmentalstewardship in its system, causing a triple benefit to the environment, finance and healththat far outweighs the efforts. Energy & Environment supports UHN’s vision of “A HealthierWorld,” by powering patient and planet-centred care, research and education.

The Energy & Environment department, part of Facilities Management-Planning, Redevelopment & Operations, continued to foster a strongculture of sustainability across UHN in 2020. Although the COVID-19pandemic affected the majority of the year – resulting in increasedenergy requirements for extra ventilation and a surge in PPE waste – theteam still completed 47 projects and made strides in green initiativesacross the organization.

Notable achievements from 2020 include:A 3.1 per cent reduction in overall energy use, resulting in $5.6Msaved in utility costsLowering greenhouse gas emissions by 3,619 t (the equivalent ofremoving 787 cars from the road last year)Reducing water use by 19 per cent (equivalent to saving 55 Olympic-sized swimming pools of water)Installing Deep Lake Water Cooling at Princess Margaret, saving 6MkWh electricity, 227 t of GHGe and 29,936 m3 water annuallyA 36 per cent waste diversion rate (recycled or composted instead ofwaste going to landfill), a 6 per cent improvement from 2019Earning a Gold Climate Resiliency Award, Gold Climate LeadershipAward and Silver Renewable Energy Award from Global Green &Healthy Hospitals 2020 Health Care Climate ChallengeA Smart Commute Platinum Workplace designation for the team’songoing efforts in promoting a green commute such as cycling, walking, carpooling and public transit. Highlights include:

Installing 6 more electric vehicle charging stations, bringing the total to 42Installing/improving 204 bike parking spots across four UHN sites

Energy Management UHN has saved $30 million via arobust energy management program

click forUHN's EnergyManagement

Plan

Through over 572 energy projects completed from 2010-20, UHN has avoided spending $30 million in utilities. Utility bills may rise despite energy efficiency work due to rate escalation, weatherchanges, building expansions, space use changes, equipment wear & tear, and more. Accounting forthese, this graph shows what might have been without energy management (red line). Though actualcosts (blue) rose until 2016, “business as usual” (red) was far higher. The green tint between showscost savings, further emphasized by the bar graph showing annual savings.

Direct

Green House Gas Emissions (GHGe)

Indirect Greenhouse gas emissions from offsiteenergy generation, including electricity, steam and district cooling

Burning fossil fuels creates the emissions that cause climate change, while energyefficiency reduces those emissions.  Through energy efficiency projects, UHN haslowered its greenhouse gas emissions by 33222 t since 2010. That’s like plantingover half a million trees or taking 787 cars off the road! As climate change is a directthreat to human health, UHN, as a healthcare institution, has a critical role to play.
