“An amazing experience I will remember for the rest of my life”

The DYO Chamber Music Summer Courses, which have

been taking place in idyllic surroundings for more than 30

years, offer a great opportunity to play and perform music

in a fun, informal and uncompetitive environment. New

(and sometimes lifelong) friends are quickly formed in this

nurturing atmosphere.

Students will experience all that chamber and orchestral

music can offer – playing and working together, and rising

to new challenges with fantastic results musically. Music

tuition is complemented with many less formal musical

adventures such as songwriting masterclasses, hip-hop

dancing and talent shows!

Daily sports, swimming and more traditional summer

camp activities make this an action-packed and

unforgettable experience.

What’s included?

ALL MUSIC TUITION: Two to three hours per day in chamber groups with a dedicated tutor

(one tutor per four students) and one to two hours of full orchestra.

ALL EXTRA ACTIVITIES: Two to three hours per day of various activities including drama,

sport, swimming, songwriting and art. ALL MEALS: Lunch and dinner is provided. Breakfast is also included for our

residential players.

ALL FUN EVENING ACTIVITIES: Evening concerts, quizzes, movie and pizza night, disco, talent

show and much more.

Students have the option to stay overnight in dormitory accommodation,

or to go home each evening. For non-residential players their day starts

at 9am and finishes at approximately 9.30pm.

Our players – and their parents – say it best

My son met lots of new people, made new friends and had the best craic … there was also a

mention of music!

I loved the kind people and the nice tutors.

Saying yes to do this course was the best

decision I have ever made.

This experience has re-ignited my child’s interest in music.

We are amazed at what our children achieved

in so short a time and their performance confidence levels soared.

Fingers crossed I can come again next year –

I loved every single moment of it.

JUNIOR COURSE

PRIMARY SCHOOL AGE MUSICIANS (from age nine)

Sunday 30th June to Wednesday 3rd July

The junior course will help to develop the confidence and musical skills

of young string, wind and percussion players. Learning and improving

musically are at the heart of our courses but we also place a great

emphasis on fun! There are plenty of opportunities to join in with social

activities and to make new friends.

STRINGS

Our string tutors are experts in chamber music – both playing and

teaching – and many have experienced the courses as students

themselves. All our tutors are enthusiastic about sharing the delights and

rewards of chamber music with young players.

WIND

We welcome wind, brass and recorders to join the Wind Ensemble group.

Our popular wind tutor, Laoise O’Brien, has many years’ experience in

teaching young players. Students will also have the chance to play with

the full orchestra.

NB: String and wind applicants must currently be receiving lessons in their

instruments, have completed grade 1 and be able to read music competently.

PERCUSSION

Our percussion course is a fantastic way to learn a variety of percussion

instruments and caters to both beginners and improvers with an emphasis

on fun-based learning. Players will also have the chance to play percussion

with a full orchestra. The course is ideal for non-orchestral players – and

siblings of players attending the string and wind course – who are eager to

get involved in music while joining in with all the summer camp fun. Our

popular percussion tutor, Paddy Nolan, will return this year.

STRINGS

String players will cover a wide range of chamber music repertoire and significantly

develop their musical skills. Each string quartet is coached by a dedicated expert

tutor for the duration of the course, who will ensure that players are both

encouraged and challenged, as well as receiving instruction from our guest tutor,

Mia Cooper. Mia is leader of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and is a member of the

String Faculty of the Royal Irish Academy of Music. She is also Visiting Tutor in

Chamber Music at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester.

WIND

The Wind Ensemble course offers players a chance to explore a full repertoire

of classical, jazz, swing and blues music. Players will enjoy the full wind band

as well as playing in smaller ensembles. Our Wind Director is James

Cavanagh, founder of the Irish Youth Wind Ensemble and Professor of Trumpet

and Fellow at the Royal Irish Academy of Music.

PERCUSSION

This year we are delighted to offer percussion on our senior course.
