Efficiency, Price, Pressure Drop,Corrosion Resistance, and
LongevityOptimizationEnhanced TubesEnhanced tubes have superior
heat transfer
characteristics, which translates into better
efficiency and lower chiller energy consumption.
Enhancements provide two benefits: moresurface area where heat
can be transferred
from one side of the tube to the other, andmore fluid
turbulence. Externalenhancementsare optimized for the refrigerant
properties andthe application (boiling or condensing),
whileinternal enhancements affect the fluid flowingthrough the
tubes. Several different types ofenhancements are available.
TECU• 3/4" outside tube diameter, with a large number of
internal starts (twists) to achieve high efficiency.• Higher
associated pressure drops than IMCU or IECU
IECU• 1" outside tube diameter, with a large number of internal
starts (twists) to achieve high efficiency.• Fouling rates are
comparable to TECU tubes
• Overall not as efficient as TECU tubes due to less effective
heat transfer area caused by lower tube counts in the heat
exchangers.• Lower pressure drops tha TECU and IMCU tubes.
IMCU• 1" outside tube diameter, comparable fouling rates and
cleanability as TECU and IECU tubes.• Provide higher efficiency but
higher pressure drop than IECU, and are more cost effective than
some TECU options.• Micro-Enhanced tubes do no follow the typical
rifling or twisting pattern as other enhanced or low-fouling tubes•
Depending upon manufacturer and/or the location of the tube
(evaporator or condenser), the internal enhancement can resemble a
crisscross "waffle" pattern or a rough "pebbled" surface
Tube DiameterTwo outside tube diameters are used in Trane
chillers 1-inchand 3/4-inch. The tube diameter affects the number
of tubesthat can be used in a heat exchanger for a specific
capacity, and the efficiency and pressure drop that corresponds with
it.The number and size of the tubes— along with the shell sizeand
length—also affect the amount of refrigerant required tocharge the
chiller. Depending on the specified chiller efficiencyand any
pressure drop limitations, the most cost effectiveselection could
use 1-inch tubes in both the evaporator andcondenser, or 3/4-inch
tubes in both the evaporator andcondenser, or 1-inch tubes in one
heat exchanger and 3/4inch tubes in the other heat exchanger.

Shell LengthCenTraVac chillers are highly customized, and
differentshell lengths are available with multiple
compressorcombinations. For a given tonnage, longer shells
usuallymean higher efficiency, while shorter shells lower thecost
and the waterside pressure drop. It is also possibleto use longer
shells to extend the capacity range of agiven compressor.
Tube ThicknessThicker wall tubes provide more corrosion
resistance, but decrease heat transfer efficiency. Thinner wall
tubescost less and have slightly better initial efficiency,
butoffer less corrosion resistance. The critical thickness iswhere
the tube is the thinnest (in the finned section),and not in the
tubesheet area where all tubes are
between 0.05 and 0.06 inches thick. For both evaporatorsand
condensers, Trane offers three tube-wall thicknesses:0.025, 0.028,
and 0.035 inches. The most frequentlyrecommended tube-wall
thickness for both evaporatorsand condensers is the 0.028-inch
tubewall.
Wall Thickness (Root-to-Root)
Intermediate Tube SupportIntermediate support sheets are welded
into the evaporatorand condenser shells at 2- to 3-foot intervals
throughoutthe length of the shell. The tubes are secured at
theintermediate tube support sheets to ensure a snug fit.Supporting
the weight of the tubes is easy, but preventingthe tubes from
movement is what influences the design ofthe tube supports.
Tube-clip supportsPrevious Trane design and the current
designsof other manufacturers use “skip-finned” tubesin order to
secure tubes to intermediate supportsheets (see Figure 2, and
Figure 4). Tubes aredesigned with un-enhanced sections in order
toallow for direct internal mechanical expansioninto support sheets
for a tight fit.
Due to the nature of how tightly the tubes arebound to each
support sheet, the skip-finneddesign leaves tubes vulnerable to
excessive strainas a result of thermal expansion and
contraction. Also, not only do skip-finned tube supportsdecrease the
heat transfer surface area, they maketube maintenance and
replacement (if needed)extremely difficult.
As a result of replacement difficulties, water plugsare
typically placed on both ends of a failed tubeto impede water flow
and prevent leakage betweenwater and refrigerant circuits.
Depending upon howmany tubes fail, the use of several plugs can
resultin decreased heat transfer capability and efficiency.Often,
when several tubes are in need ofreplacement, entire shell bundles
are replaced dueto the time and difficulty of finding and
removingfailed tubes.
Trane uses tube-clips (see Figure 3, and Figure 5),which offer
improved chiller efficiency by increasingthe effective surface area
on each tube. Because“skipped” portions of the tube are no longer
requiredfor tube rolling at the supports, the tubes can beenhanced
down their entire length, significantlyincreasing the heat transfer
area.

Engineers Update
Compared to a skipped-fin design, which uses manual
internaltubeexpansion and is susceptible to misexpansion (tubes
expandedoutside of tube supports), tube-clips fit securely in
place, areextremely reliable, and extend past the tube supports.
Tube-clipsupport sheets are constructed of gauge steel because
internalmechanical expansion (tube rolling) no longer exists, and
the tubeweight is distributed over a larger surface area with the
tube-clips.
Tube vibration concerns are eliminated as a result of the
uniquedamping effect of the clips, which dissipates the energy that
wouldstart the tube vibration. Tube-clips allow lengthwise movement
thatprovides a greater tolerance for thermal expansion and
contraction, and makes it easier to remove the tubes if service work
orreplacement is ever necessary—the tubes only need to be
brokenloose at the tube end sheets instead of down the entire
length of theshell at each support sheet.
Tube-clips have been used in Trane products for over 50
yearswith proven success.
Material SelectionCopper tubes are used for most chiller
applications today. Copperis a highly conductive metal that
provides cost effective chillerefficiency. However, based on the
application, some customersprefer to specify a different
material.
Condensers are more likely to use special tube materials
thanevaporators. This is because the evaporator is part of a
“closedsystem,” whereas the condenser is often an “open system”
exposedto the outside environment. Systems with open cooling towers
requireproper on-site tower maintenance and water quality control
toeliminate the need for and expense of specialty tubes.
Whencondensers are in direct contact with poor quality water,
corrosion isoften a concern and special tube materials are
available for thoseapplications.
Trane offers cupronickel, stainless steel, and titanium tubes.
Tubesheets can beclad in the same tube material orcovered with a
special ceramic epoxycoating. Clad tubesheets have anembedded
layer—approximately 1/4 inch—of material on the outer surface of
thetube end sheets.
Waterboxes are often coated as welland supplied with sacrificial
anodes. If marine style waterboxes are providedthe baffle plate can
be constructed ofstainless steel. If brackish water is aconcern,
the combination of stainlesssteel or titanium tubes with
theappropriate tubesheet cladding, waterbox coatings, baffle plates
(marine waterboxes) and sacrificial anodesshould be considered.
Titanium tubeswith titanium clad tubesheets are oftenused with
seawater condenser loops or
where industrial chemicals might leachinto the water loops. For
example, papermills often require titanium in both theevaporator
and condenser heat
exchangers for this reason.
Many customers with brackish or saltwater prefer to use
intermediate heatexchangers to avoid sending corrosivewater
directly into their chiller. Inextremely corrosive applications,
bothintermediate heat exchangers andspecialty tubes are used
together.
