Every morning when my wife turns on the television to tune into live Gurbani

from Golden Temple, the beautiful hymns bring an aura of peace and positiv-

ity to get me through the day.

I am sure I am not alone in experiencing this emotion. The same would

proved right during the Zee TV Hero Honda

Saregamapa Singing Superstar Delhi auditions. Pankaj

Namdev - a handicapped man who sings bhajans at

the temple door came for the Delhi auditions and mes-

merized everyone with his mellifluous voice. Namdev's

soulful rendition on the song "mere sahibaan..." sent

all the mentors into a reverie. Mentor Shekhar was so

captivated with the beautiful voice of this disabled

man that he literally went into a trance. He left his

judge's seat and went and sat at Pankaj's feet. Said

Shekhar, "I felt like I'm sitting in a temple worshipping

the divine... Your voice has given me so much calm

and peace... I feel lucky to be a part of Saregamapa

where I come across such mind blowing voices..."

Divine VOICEGifted singers artists like Namdev make up a sig-

nificant but small percentage of India's classical mu-

sic catalogue; and its Saregamapa's growing focus

to discover and promote such undiscovered talent.

A few months ago, 12/24 Karol Bagh on Zee TV

had a 20-day track on molestation. Many viewers

wrote in with their own stories. "Our Facebook page

is full, many bloggers talk about family embarrass-

ment," sighs Sharma.

Another Zee show, Yahan Main Ghar Ghar Kheli,

is addressing the issue of domestic violence. A year

ago, the Imagine daily, Jyoti, had focused on the same

issue. Lead actress Sneha Wagh is a real life victim

herself. She asserts, "I hate recalling the past but

now I know that keeping silent is as much a crime."

Sanjog Se Bani Sangini is the

love story of Gauri and

Neil Nitin Mukesh and Deepika joined the

Chhote Ustaad gang to promote their lat-

est film, Lafangey Parindey, and have some

fun with the contestants and judges.

Despite suffering from a severe head-

ache, Neil popped pills and came on sets

and managed to have a great time. Likewise,

Sonu Nigam who was down with fever, took

injections during the shoots and was enthu-

siastic in spite of the fever.

This was Deepika's first appearance on

the show. She broke down when Rahat

Fateh Ali Khan sang "Main Jahan Rahoon".

She was overwhelmed with emotion and

burst into tears. She was emotional for quite

some time. And then on Neil's request, Sonu

took centrestage and sang "Ab Mujhe Raat

Din" which finally made Deepika smile.

Neil and Sonu sang "Jaane Kahan Gaye

Wo Din". Sonu said that his dad is a Mukesh

Bhakt. This song is a tribute to his father and

Neil's grandfather Late Mukesh. Deepika

sings as well after Neil egged her on to sing

"Mann Lafanga." Sonu praised her for sing-

ing in sur.

All women had to wish a happy birthday to Ranbir

Kapoor in a very different style. In this task, Rupali Ganguly

got first position.

Another question was - "Inme Se Kaun Ladko Ke Samne

Girgit Ki Tarah Rang Badalti Hai?" They had to judge them-

selves in order to 1-8 ranks. The question was asked by

100 men also. Neha got number 1 position in the internal

ranking. However, Karishma Tanna was on the first posi-

tion by public voting. Finally, Yami Gautam was chosen as

Meeth Choori because she spoke less and was diplomatic

during the episode.

Set in Kolhapur, Sarva Gunn Sampanna is the story of Swara, a well known

theatre dancer who is the only child of her parents. She and her parents work in

a theatre group which does stages in an around the small towns of

Maharastra. Swara's parents do not want their daughter to continue

with dancing as a career and want her to settle down.

Life takes a big turn for Swara when she becomes the bahu of

the most respectable and esteemed family of Kolhapur - the

Deshmukh family. Life seems like a Cinderella tale for Swara as

she is accepted by every member of the house including her hus-

band Aditya, who initially was reluctant to marry her.

But soon her past and background catches up with her and the

fact of her being a "Lavni dancer" opens up in front of her in-

laws and Swara's life crashes in front of her. From here

starts Swara's struggle to rebuild her life and one day

attain the pinnacle she had dreamt of.

Ajay Singh and his family own and op-

erate "Rajri" a clothing emporium in

South Bombay. Ajay is a fan of ghazal

singer, Gulfam Hussain, and is thrilled to

actually meet him during one of his per-

formances. During this performance, he

meets with Seema, and both fall in love.

Seema is introduced to Ajay's family, and

they unanimously approve of her.

What Seema does not know is that

Ajay is actually Assistant Commissioner

of Police, Ajay Singh Rathod, who has

been assigned the task of apprehend-

ing a group of terrorists that are being sheltered and protected by cor-

rupt parliamentary representatives, with arms being supplied by Paki-

stan. Ajay does not know that the trail which he is following will lead him

to Rajasthan, right into the house of the person who runs this operation

- a person who is known to him.

Banku, his mother, Anjali Sharma

and father move into their new

house -- the Nath villa, unaware

of the fact that the house is inhab-

ited by a ghost. It is learnt the ghost

is not too happy with his new

housemates. But what the ghost

is not prepared for is his unlikely

friendship with Banku. Anjali will

soon find out that indeed the bun-

galow is haunted by its former

owner -

Kailash Nath - who has taken a

morbid liking to Banku, and will not

permit them to vacate the house

under any circumstance.

Now Banku must uncover the reason why his ghostly friend is stuck

and help him to attain salvation.

this Dev is not the poor Dev that Anjali once knew. This Dev is a multi-

millionaire, scheming, and devious, and a Dev who will try to win Anjali

over by hook or by crook. But Anjali bypasses her haunted memories of

Dev and finally falls in love with Ram and will not leave him by any

chance.

More than 50 years old,

Andaz is a romantic tri-

angle that represents in many

ways an allegory of the

newly independent India.

There is the liberated woman

in Nargis whose story through

the progression of the film

symbolizes the dangerous se-

ductions of modernity, the ´en-

trepreneur´ of the new India

in Dilip Kumar who in his ea-

gerness to occupy the space left vacant by the vanishing aristocracies of

the old India is unaware of the equally regressive hauntings in these very

spaces, and finally the aristocratic Raj Kapoor who enormously and tragi-

cally miscalculates the dynamics of these new equations. In a sense all

three characters fumble around in the mappings of newly independent

India and their interactions create the tragedies of Andaz.

Neeta (Nargis) befriends Dilip (Dilip Kumar) after the latter saves her

from a potential horse-riding accident. Dilip misunderstands this friend-

ship to be love. Then one day Rajan (Raj Kapoor) who has been abroad

arrives and Dilip learns that Neeta has in fact been engaged to Rajan all

along. Dilip reveals to Neeta the truth about his emotions for her. Neeta is

shocked and turns away totally from him and in the meantime also mar-

ries Rajan. But Rajan, at a party Rajan overhears a conversation be-

tween Dilip and his wife which because of its incompleteness throws a

web of suspicion on his mind about Neeta. From here the story moves

towards its ultimately tragic denouement.

The Bollywood classic Dekh

Kabira Roya is a farci-

cal comedy about the vicissi-

tudes of modern love. Mohan

(Anoop Kumar), Pradeep (Daljit),

and Ranjeet (Jawahar Kaul) are

three struggling artists--singer,

painter, and writer, respectively-

-who live together in the same

rooming house. Romantic hijinks

ensue when the trio meet three

lovely girls, Geeta (Ameeta),

Rekha (Anita Guha), and

Kalpana (Shubha Khote), with

very specific ideas about art

A mute and minimalist drama far ahead of its times, Anupama tells the

story of Uma (Sharmila Tagore) whose father (played with brilliant

authority by Tarun Bose) detests his

daughter ever since his beloved wife died

during childbirth. The transference of his

grief into the daughter's guilt is majesti-

cally achieved through the subtle screen-

play and sparse dialogues. Dharmendra

as an author who brings the repressed

girl's angst out is also unforgettable. The

stress on the spoken word and its oppo-

sition to the silence of stifled emotions

comes across in the contrasting charac-

ters played by Sharmila Tagore and

Shashikala. What gave Anupama its bed-

rock of emotional strength was the

troubled father-daughter relationship.

I am a small town girl from Almora, a beautiful hill

station in the state of Uttaranchal, in India. I have come

to Australia to pursue my Masters. As an Indian, I love

watching Hindi movies and listening to Bollywood mu-

sic. The motive behind participating in a multicultural

programme like Dream Girls, is to present the rich cul-

tural heritage of my country.

AUDREY

I'm representing Indonesia. I was born in Jakarta, Indo-

nesia. I am studying hospitality management. I love

playing piano and dancing as well. This is my first time

participating in pageant competition, I am so proud I

can represent on behalf on my country in this

multicultural.

HARLEEN

I am a good dancer and I like dressing up. I have a pet

dog. His name is Boss and he is the kid in my family. I

believe that one should make the most of everyday,

and every opportunity that you are given. That's what

makes life wonderful. I think my interests and abilities

really reflect what Dream Girl 2010 is.

JEHANNE

I'm excited to be part of an event that celebrates cultural

diversity and harmony. I dream of bieng an actress. I am

ambitious and have big dreams but I absolutely believe

that as human beings, it is our capacity for love and kind-

ness that is the true measure of success. I was born in

Belair, South Australia, to a Scottish born father and Aus-

tralian mother. I am proud to be representing Australia.

JESSICA

My background is from Uruguay, South America and I am

very passionate to be representing my country and its cul-

tures. I love taking on new and exciting challenges and

can't wait to experience this journey of Dream Girl 2010, as

I aspire to become an accomplished actor and film maker

in the near future. I believe Dream Girl 2010 will help me

grow and have a better understanding about myself.

JYOTI

I am a Fijian Indian. I am 16 years old and was born in

Suva, Fiji. I was only one year old when I came to

Australia. Currently I am at school in year 11. My hob-

bies are dancing, surfing the net, making new friends. I

also love going out and having fun with the people I

love most.

MANISHA

I belong to central part of India. The Dream Girl 2010

project will further help me to achieve my goal of better

understanding the beautiful diversity and different as-

pects of different cultures and arts through an excellent

and expressive platform of acting and modelling.

MEHNAAZ

I am from a Fijian Indian background. I love the camera

and I love to smile! My passion in life is modelling and

dancing, and my dream is to one day go to India and

enter the world of Bollywood, Dream Girl 2010 seems to

the perfect opportunity for me to live my dream.

NANA

I am from Ghana. My future aspirations are not very

clear yet, but all I know is that I want to do something

that would make someone's life a bit better. Just to give

back to the others what the world has given to me. I

believe that this contest will help me make my aspira-

tions clearer, and will give me a louder voice in the

community.

Growing up in Australia, with an Indian heritage and back-

ground, is both a challenge and a privilege. However, I've

managed to keep the flames of my passion for Indian cul-

ture, dancing, music, movies and customs burning strong.

By entering Dream Girl 2010 I am hoping to meet inspiring

new people, be faced with exciting new challenges and

I was born in Sydney Australia and come from Lebanese

descent. My main interests are exploring languages and

culture, travelling and reading. I have a love for lan-

guages and exploring other cultures. I am also a part

time model. I work very hard to achieve my goals and

dreams. I enjoy challenges and believe where there is a

will there is a way.

SHARON

I was born in Australia, my background being Vietnamese.I have a huge passion for fashion and design. I am an Australian born Indo-Fijian. A phsychology sudent

and I work as a pharmacy assistant. Life for me is an

eternal quest as I search for the meaning of existence. I

am passionate about bringing social change in ways

that would make this world a better place to live. My life

is my message and Dream Girl seems to be the perfect

ground to promote me and through me my vision of life.

ZEENIA

Born in Punjab, India and moving to Australia at the

age of 7, I still to hold on to my culture. I am passionate

about my culture (both Australian and Indian) and dream

of one day changing the world for the better. I wish to

represen my family, friends and community at Dream

Girl 2010 and whether I win or lose, I am determined to

make them all proud.

I'm Fiji Indian, and I believe Dream Girl will be a great

opportunity for me to experience something new and

be a part of my own culture. The competition clearly

reflects the changes of Bollywood, as it is a multicultural

pageant, and I feel that I am honoured to be a part of

they are only cause speculation about one's relationship

status. Ask our Bollywood babes. Re-

cently, Priyanka Chopra, who was

spotted sporting a huge rock on

her ring finger at several public

outings, had to clarify, "It is a birth-

day gift from my parents. I am wearing it in my right hand to

avoid any speculation. It's a 7carat solitaire - my parents have

set a high standard for the guy who will propose to me in

future."

Before Priyanka, it was Bipasha Basu's turn to clear the

air about the diamond ring she had been flaunting.

"John (Abraham) is my diamond supplier," said Bips, who

was quick to clarify, "It's certainly not an engagement ring."

While Bips may brag about John as her "diamond supplier",

Sushmita Sen has other plans. "This ring is to remind me

and all of you that I don't need a man in my life to have

diamonds. I can own them myself," said Sush. Kareena

Kapoor was also seen flaunting a diamond ring while

promoting 3 Idiots. But, it's not clear whether the rock

is a gift from beau Saif Ali Khan. Although Bebo clari-

lation is rife that they may go public about their

relationship soon.

An actress, who also attended the special

screening of Aamir's film, says, "They are defi-

nitely together. At the party, she was walking

around and networking, and he kept following her.

He was laughing and joking and seemed in very

good spirits," she said on condition of anonymity.

BIGBREAK-UPIt's official! After months of speculation, reports and

rumours, actor Salman Khan has finally admitted that

he has broken with long-time girlfriend Katrina Kaif.

"I have broken up with Katrina," said the 44-year

old, in a recent television interview. "We were friends

then for everybody, we are friends now." At a public

event recently, Katrina too, had said, "I am not in a

relationship right now. Though I have plans for my

wedding, there is no one in my life right now."

While Salman and Katrina were unavailable for

comment, a close friend of Salman says that prob-

lems started during the shooting of Salman's film

Wanted last year. "They are definitely not together

anymore. Salman was really depressed during the

shooting of Wanted... he won't get any calls from

Katrina, unlike earlier. But, he made sure he stopped

stressing about it and they're friends now. It wasn't a

bitter break-up"

Interestingly, Kat has been missing from most

events organised by Salman for his charity, Being

Human, in the past three months. "She's also been

staying away from Salman's family gatherings, even

though she still visits his house as a friend," says a

source from Katrina's clan.

Salman's spokesperson, however, continues to

deny the break-up reports, saying, "He did not give

such a quote. He doesn't talk about his personal life.

He just repeated the anchor's question and they (the

channel) played it on a loop. We are very upset."

Speculation is now rife that Sallu may have

moved on.


When it comes to love-making scenes, Neil

Nitin Mukesh has still a long way to go.

So it was discovered when Neil landed up in

Coorg to play the first of Priyanka Chopra's

seven husbands in Vishal Bhardwaj's Saat

Khoon Maaf. During the love-making scene,

Priyanka had to put all her acting skills into ac-

tion to get the shy Neil to perform on par.

Apparently, there are seven love-making

sequences for the actress with her seven

screen husbands, each of different moods and

playing-time.

The love scene with Neil turned out to be

somewhat more complicated than he had bar-

gained for. That's when Neil panicked.

Thorough professional that she is Priyanka,

sailed through the love scenes with her other

screen husbands. With Neil, there was appar-

ently some awkwardness and much re-takes

before, much to Neil's relief, the shot was

okayed.

Neil doesn't deny the absence of an adequate

comfort level with Priyanka. "But that's because

I hardly got to know her before working with her

in Coorg. It was like …in and out. We didn't get to

know one another at all. I hardly had time to

reach Coorg before we started shooting. There

was no time for proper rehearsals."

Neil can't help compare his inadequate chem-

istry with Priyanka to his great rapport with

Deepika Padukone during the shooting of

Lafangey Parindey.

Her sceptics may argue that Katrina Kaif

is not a natural born actor. Yet no one

can deny her colossal star power! Her envi-

able record of 10 on 14 is unmatched by

any of her contemporaries.

Work aside, this Bollywood beauty is also

preoccupied with getting a new home. "Yeah

I want a seaside apartment or bungalow. I

like my current home. But I have been toying

with the idea of getting myself a bigger place.

I'd like my mother to come and live with me.

And the rest of my family who lives over-

seas, to visit me often," says Kat.

Ask the usual cliched question on

whether she has time for love and marriage

in her scheme of things, and Kat says, "Of

course, all girls do. I enjoy wealth. But I know

that when I marry, it will be for love."

She confesses that she is a romantic

and if there is one thing she is absolutely

sure about is that she will demand absolute

faithfulness from her partner. "I will not tol-

erate infidelity," says Kat.

Katrina Kaif has always been professional

at work, but for the first time, for some

reason, she walked out from the Abbas-

Mustan's film, which is a remake of Holly-

wood hit Italian Job, after giving a nod to the

project. The directors have now finalised

Sonam Kapoor for the role.

The remake has Sonam paired up with

Abhishek Bachchan. Neil Nitin Mukesh and

Bobby Deol are also among the lead actors.

Buzz is that Kat walked out from Italian

Job Bollywood version because of a Yashraj

project with Imran Khan.

The director duo was quite upset with

Katrina's behaviour and even told a tabloid

that they are 'shocked', 'hurt' and 'extremely

disappointed' by her act. Now, as they have

acquired the rights of making the remake,

nothing is stopping them.

Mallika Sherawat sure is full of sur-

prises. Agreed, that her shape-shift-

ing-snake stint in "Hissss", with costumes

complementing her body rather well, did

scale her acting career to new heights but

the actress is making further progress. The

key to success is versatility, it seems.

Mallika has recently acquired the script of

a horror film that she is very keen on acting

in.

During her one-year stay in the US,

Mallika has come across several scripts

from different writers. She has apparently

loved the one that is supposed to be a hor-

ror story on reincarnation. Though the film

will most probably be directed by a Holly-

wood director, it will have, Mallika tells us,

a very Bollywood feel to it. Mallika says, "I

have heard the script of a horror film on

reincarnation. It is currently in the develop-

ing process. When it is complete, one shall

work on the director aspect."

Like "Hissss", which is supposed to be

a typically Bollywood story but has been

directed by Hollywood director Jennifer

Lynch, this film too has a mish-mash of

sorts. But an optimistic Mallika adds, "I have

met so many writers and only one of them

brought this lovely horror script to me."

After signing a new film with Amitabh

Bachchan, the horror film seems like the

next best thing to Mallika. Though a bit home-

sick now, Mallika is looking forward to this

new project.

She says, "It's been more than a year

that I have been in the US but it has been

fruitful. This is indeed an interesting phase

in my career and is taking me in the right

direction."

Taking its title from Sister Sledge's hit song,

Siddharth P Malhotra's We Are Family stars

Kareena Kapoor and Kajol in the roles made

famous by Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon

in the Chris Columbus original Stepmom.

The movie is about a cancer struck divor-

cee who has to accept the other woman in her

ex-husband's life as the stepmother of her kids,

and the problems the two women face in rela-

tionship with each other.

Maya (Kajol) is the perfect mother. Her life

revolves around her three children, Aleya

(Aachal Munjal), Ankush (Nominath Ginsberg)

and Anjali (Diya Sonecha) and she thinks noth-

ing much about the world around her. Despite

being divorced from her husband Aman (Arjun

Rampal), Maya has ensured that everything runs

smoothly in her house under her watch, and

that they continue to remain a happy family unit.

However, when Aman introduces his girl-

friend, Shreya (Kareena Kapoor), a career-ori-

ented woman, who has a lot to learn about

children, to the family, the situation takes an

unexpected turn. When an incident changes

their lives drastically, bringing the two women

under the same roof, they find themselves put-

ting to test an unusual situation; can two moth-

ers make a home?

Arjun Rampal steps into Ed Harris' shoes

and really leaves the film to the ladies, who

both seem ready to ramp it up.

In a trailer about the film Kareena is chirpily

telling her stepchildren that they won't be going

to school today, a balloon Kajol wastes no time

in hysterically popping. We then see a

bubblegum montage of moments of conflict be-

tween the two leading ladies.

When Rampal asks his young son how diffi-

cult it'll be living with all these girls. 'Tell me

about it,' says the kid, 'and now you've gone

and gotten one more. It's such a mess.'

'Eat your food,' Rampal deadpans back.

When she was growing up Kareena Kapoor

admired Kajol. She remembered to talk about

Kajol with reverence in all her interviews.

However, now that Karan Johar has pitted

them opposite each other, the talk of the rivalry

between the two actresses has begun. Some

Kareena loyalists have seen portions of the

film and they're saying that Bebo has overshad-

owed Kajol, and of course the moment the Kajol

fans hear this, they will start an anti-Kareena

campaign. And then there will be some others

trying to douse these fires.

Directorial debutYoung Siddharth Malhotra says his directo-

rial debut is a homage to his two favourite di-

rectors - Sooraj Barjatya and Karan Johar.

'Soorajji's 'Maine Pyar Kiya' and Karan's

'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' are my two favourite films.

When I saw the first, I wanted to be part of

Hindi movies. When I saw the second, I wanted

to direct a film. 'We Are Family' is a homage to

both Soorajji and Karan,' said Malhotra.

Sooraj, who has become ultra-reclusive in

recent months, has agreed to watch the film.

'Sooraj-ji will be the first to watch 'We Are Fam-

ily'. My film is just 1 hour 55 minutes long. I hope

I make him proud,' said Malhotra.

The film is releasing Sept 3. If Karan has

decided not to let his production clash with

Salman Khan's 'Dabangg', it is because his good

friend Shah Rukh Khan advised him to avert the

clash.

Apparently Shah Rukh felt doubly protec-

tive towards 'We Are Family' since it involved

two of his closest friends Karan and Kajol.

In fact, when Shah Rukh came to know Kajol

was expecting, he went out of his way to ac-

commodate his dates for Kareena in 'Ra.1' with

'We Are Family'.

"Dabangg' and Shankar's 'Robot' are releas-

ing on Eid. So we have the Bollwood's Rajnikant

(Salman) and Rajnikant on the same day. It just

made no sense for us to release with them. We

are coming a week earlier, araam se,' said

Malhotra.

I guess times are changing. I've been

fortunate to be at the right place at the

right time when film-makers are approach-

ing new kinds of films, new subjects, new

characters. The superstars have crossed

a certain age and I'm part of the newer

generation.

That's a very kind comment to makeon all our 40-plus stars.

Not at all. They have got different char-

acters to play. They aren't doing the col-

lege-boy roles; those are coming to me.

As Neetu and Rishi's son, you wouldhave been expected to be a bit moreof a yahoo than you are.

The word expectation has been at-

tached to me from the day I started work-

ing. But I have certain ideologies about

how I want to work.

Tell us about your ideologies.It's stuff I relate to, that I've grown up

with. I've had a comfortable life; I've stud-

ied in New York and have been exposed

to different cultures. I just don't want to

run around trees. I would rather do films

like Rocket Singh and Wake Up Sid. These

are films I connect to, I've friends like

these characters.

More likely to have friends like Sidthan Rocket Singh.

Yes. That film is an underdog's story.

Everything is not about Raj and Rahul in

films.

I don't think I've seen manycharacterisations of a sardar as anunderdog.

I think that has to change. It's not only

about Singh is Kinng, though that is also

part of cinema. I have nothing against com-

mercial cinema.

Which film do you prefer, RocketSingh or Wake Up Sid?

I like Rocket Singh as a film. I thought it

would explode the scene, that it would be

like Munnabhai. But nobody really went to

see it.

The experience of acting out a char-

acter like Sid was awesome. I got to work

with a dear friend, director Ayan

Mukherjee.

Are you friends with many young di-rectors?

In this industry, friendship is based on

success or on whether you guys are go-

ing to do another film together. You have

to have friends you've grown up with;

there are no new friends.

So, who are the friends you've grownup with?

They are my parents' friends' children:

Abhay Chopra (Ravi Chopra's son) and

Rohit Dhawan (David Dhawan's son).

They are aspiring directors. There's also

Binoy Gandhi, an aspiring actor. And

Ayan.

Have you watched all your par-ents' movies?

I've watched all my father's mov-

ies but I'm a little shy about watching

my mother's films because I feel no-

body has the right to judge her.

My parents have just done a

movie together; it's called Do Dooni

Chaar. Now that I under stand this

profession, it's heart-warming to

see my mother on screen.

That should also make you un-derstand the pressures that

come with it.I have no pressure. I'm not run-

ning after money.

I love my job. I'm very ambitious.

People say I want to be the biggest ac-

tor or the greatest star.

But I want to be both. And I am finding

the middle ground without any restrictions.

My parents don't interfere in my career.

My father only helps me with the mon-

etary side of the profession.

You've been in relationships. Are theypart of work or part of life?

That's part of life which transcends

work. But because you are a celebrity,

there's an invasion of your private life.

If you are in a relationship, it's not for

the public, but for yourself. Actors

live like gypsies and are constantly

travelling; you need a stable factor

in your life and when you meet

somebody like that, why should

you not do it?

You are the youngest chal-lenger for the top spot. Do yousee a generation gap betweenyou and the Khans, HrithikRoshan?

My competition is not just Imran

Khan, Shahid Kapoor and Harman

Baweja. From Shah Rukh Khan to

Mr Amitabh Bachchan, right down

Aamir Khan in 3 Idiots. But I

don't have a favourite actor nor

Natha (amateur actor Omkar Das)

cides to commit suicide in the

hope of securing a government

compensation of Rs 100,000 for

and opportunistic politicians jump

from Natha's predicament.

As the frenzy peaks, cold

drink kiosks and tea stalls come

up around Natha's house in next

to no time. The whole world

wants to know whether Natha

will really die. But does anybody

really care?

We laugh as everybody in

Peepli seems to cut a sorry fig-

ure. But do we feel guilty as

well? Peepli Live seeks to push

us across the line that divides

detached glee and genuine con-

cern.

Peepli Live lampoons an entire range

of usual suspects - voyeuristic media

persons, smarmy bureaucrats, schem-

ing local-level political goons and self-

serving rulers, all of whom want a piece

of the sleepy village where a farmer is

Beneath the opulent, ostentatious, chic look

of Aisha, one unsurprisingly stumbles

upon a gem of a story flimsily told. About

200 years, Jane Austen's 'Emma' comes to life

once again on the silver screen in director

Rajshree Ojha's film Aisha, starring Sonam

Kapoor as its titular protagonist.

Set in the high society of Delhi, it's the story

of a rich, privileged girl with truckloads of de-

signer costumes, lots of free time and an irre-

pressible fixation to play cupid between people

who would rather be happy left alone. Aisha

(Sonam) is surrounded by a bunch of friends

who patronize her, pamper her, irritate her,

peeve her, drool over her and also become a

vocation for her.

There's Arjun (Abhay Deol), an investment

banker, who keeps giving Aisha reality checks

and is the source of unending annoyance and

irritation for her. There's the spunky Pinky

(Ira Dubey), Aisha's best

friend who speaks out her

mind without being obsequi-

ous. There's the small-town

girl Shefali (Amrita Puri) who's

come to Delhi to get married.

Aisha takes her under her

wing and tries to fix up her

match with possible suitors,

including Randhir Gambhir

(Cyrus Sahukar) the son of a

mithai baron.

There's the charming

Dhruv (Arunoday Singh), a

London-returned hunk for

whom Aisha develops a lik-

ing. And then, there's Aarti

(Lisa Haydon), a gorgeous,

sexy chick who is a close

friend of Arjun, but an object

of jealousy for Aisha.

The first half of the film

whooshes past in character

introductions and also the

matchmaking antics of the

eponymous heroine. Aisha's

a breeze of fresh air. Her eye

always on the lookout for op-

posite genders to make a

match with. And Sonam, with

her affected mannerisms, is perfectly suited to

play the part.

The way she simpers, puckers up her face

or raises a brow has every hint of the superfi-

ciality of high class gentry. To that effect, Sonam

performs well.

The second half of the film becomes some-

what a mess when the castle of Aisha's cre-

ation comes crumbling down like a house of

cards and the relationships go kaput. The track

between Arjun and Aarti (Abhay and Lisa) and

Aisha and Dhruv (Sonam and Arunoday) isn't

as perky as could have been and the jealousy

pangs that the two lead stars get out of it aren't

really plausible.

In fact, the film's pace slackens but the pro-

ceedings do speed up again after Aisha does

soul searching and realizes her love for Arjun.

EK HANDI NU DAL BHAATIngredientsSplit pigeon pea (toor dal/arhar dal):

3/4 cup

Rice: 1 cup

Onions: 4 medium

Salt: to taste

Ghee: 4 tablespoons

Oil: 1/4 cup

Bay leaves: 2

Ginger paste: 3/4 teaspoon

Garlic paste: 3/4 teaspoon

Green chil l i paste: 3/4

teaspoon

Tomatoes, chopped: 2 medium

Garam masala powder: 1/4

teaspoon

Turmeric powder: 1/8 teaspoon

Red chilli powder: 1/2 teaspoon

Potatoes , 8 pieces each:

2 medium

Fresh coriander leaves, chopped:

2 tablespoons

Cloves: 2

Black peppercorns: 2

Cumin seeds: 3/4 teaspoon

MethodFinely slice three onions and chop one. Cook

dal with one and a quarter cups of water, salt

and one tablespoon of ghee. When half done,

strain and leave it aside. Do not discard the

stock. Half boil the rice in three cups of water

as for biryani. Drain excess water. Heat oil,

add sliced onions and fry till golden brown.

Drain on absorbent paper and set aside. This

is called birista. To the same oil add two table-

spoons of ghee and heat. Add bay leaves and

the chopped onion. Fry till the onion is translu-

cent. Add ginger paste, garlic paste and green

chilli paste, birista, tomatoes, garam masala and

all the dry masalas. SautÈ well. Add dal along

with the potatoes and coriander leaves. Fry

well then cover with half

boiled rice. Heat one

tablespoon of ghee, add

cloves, black pepper-

corns, cumin seeds.

When a nice aroma is

give out add the temper-

ing to the dal-rice mix-

ture. Cover and cook on

dum till done. Serve hot.

TRI COLOURED DHOKLAIngredientsRice: 1/2 cup, Split black gram skinless (dhuli

urad dal): 2 1/2 tablespoons, Sour yogurt: 3/4

cup, Gram flour (besan), sieved: 1 cup, Tur-

meric powder: 1/4 teaspoon, Oil: 2 tablespoons

Lemon juice: 2 tablespoons, Soda bicarbon-

ate: 1/4 teaspoon,Salt: to taste,Fresh corian-

der leaves bunch: 2 medium, Fresh mint leaves

bunch: 1 medium, Green chillies: 4-6, Sugar: 1

teaspoon, Ganthia: 1/4 cup, Mustard seeds: 1

teaspoon, Fresh coriander leaves, chopped: 2

tablespoons, Coconut, scraped: 1/2 cup

MethodFor white dhokla grind rice and urad dal into a

coarse powder. Take the powder in a bowl

and add two tablespoons yogurt and three

fourth cup of warm water. Mix thoroughly to

make a batter of pouring consistency. Take care that no lumps are

formed. Set aside to ferment for eight to ten hours. For khaman dhokla

take gram flour and turmeric powder in a bowl. Add remaining yogurt

and approximately three fourth cup of warm water and mix well to

avoid lumps. Set it aside to ferment for three to four hours. Heat

water in a pan. Place a ring in it. Take the fermented white dhokla

batter and add a mixture of half tablespoon oil, half tablespoon lemon

juice and one fourth teaspoon soda bicarbonate and mix thoroughly.

Add salt and mix. Heat water in a steamer. Grease a thali and pour the

white dhokla batter till half full. Place it on the ring in the pan. Keep it

in the steamer, cover and steam for five minutes Grind together cori-

ander leaves, mint leaves, green chillies, one tablespoon lemon juice,

salt, sugar and ganthia to a smooth paste. Mix the remaining lemon

juice, half tablespoon oil and turmeric powder in a small bowl.

Add remaining soda bicarbonate and stir to mix. Add it to the

khaman batter and mix. Remove the white dhokla from the

steamer and spread a thick layer of green chutney on

it.Pour the khaman batter over the chutney layer and

steam again for ten to twelve minutes or until cooked.

If a skewer inserted in the dhokla comes out clean it is

done. For tempering heat remaining oil in a pan and

add mustard seeds. When the seeds splutter pour

the tempering over the tri-coloured dhokla. Cut it

into squares and serve garnished coriander leaves

and scraped coconut.


The best way to achieve a fit body

is to have adequate sleep and a

balanced diet. I don't take tensions to

bed and sleep at least 7-8 hours every

day. I turn in by 10 pm if I am not shoot-

ing, and even if I am, I take power naps

between shots. It helps keep your body

fit and also makes you look and feel

good.

I drink at least a litre of water as

soon as I get up as it helps burn 25 per

cent of calories and increases metabo-

lism. It flushes out toxins at the start of

day. I drink water throughout the day

as well. It keeps my skin free of blem-

ishes.

I work out twice a day because I do

not believe in making my workout mo-

notonous. So I enjoy it twice a day,

which keeps me fresh. I do weight

training and also cardio, swimming and

martial arts throughout the week. The

whole idea is to have variety in the

routine and keep it interesting so that

I don't get bored.

I have frequent frugal meals

which includes a heavy breakfast,

healthy lunch and a light dinner

accompanied by three small

meals throughout the day. My

small meals could be a bowl

of fruits, a handful of dry

fruits or a hot cup of tea

with two Marie biscuits.

Also I never have dinner

close to my bed time.

I never crash diet

or starve. It's a big

NO for me. I believe

in being aestheti-

cally beautiful

and never take

short cuts.
