Guthrie is 30 miles north of Oklahoma City on I-35. HISTORY & MISSION The American Institute for Goat Research was founded in 1984 to develop and transfer enhanced goat production technologies to goat producers. In the three decades since its inception, the Institute has worked with and favorably impacted goat producers at local, state, regional, national, and international levels. Today, cutting edge research programs, new facilities and equipment and caring and informative extension programs ensure that the Institute will continue to create and impart information to serve its worldwide clientele. Improving dairy goat production has been a mainstay activity of the Institute beginning in 1985 with a herd of 70 Alpine kids. In 1986, a herd of Angora goats was purchased for research and extension activities on mohair production, the largest component of the goat industry at that time. Research on meat and cashmere began in 1990 with the addition of Spanish goats. As US goat producers transitioned from fiber into meat production, the Institute intensified meat goat research by adding a herd of Boer goats in 1999. Langston University

The extension program acts as a bridge, communicating information from research to producers in a useful, practical format and provides input from producers to researchers. The Extension program supports a web site containing a large amount of information, a ration balancing program and a web-based producer training certification program. Workshops are offered in Artificial Insemination, Cheesemaking and Parasite Control. There is an Annual Goat Field Day the last Saturday of April each year.

EXTENSION PROGRAM

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMThe American Institute for Goat Research has worked with research and academic institutions in over 20 countries around the world. Most programs focus on building human capacity, agricultural development and food security.

• Controlling worms in goats by management and genetics• Genetic resilience to climatic stressors• Determining nutrient requirements of goats• Goat milk production, products and quality • Goats for vegetation management• Goat feeding behavior• Goatskin quality and strength

The Institute’s Research Program explores ways to improve goat production and goat products for livestock farmers worldwide. Research focuses on solving constraints to production in meat, dairy, and fiber producing goats. Increasingly, this means employing advanced technologies such as genomics to identify animals having genetic resistance to internal parasites or being better able to withstand effects of climate change. Major areas of research are listed below:
