Baltasar Garzón es uno de los seis jueces investigadores de la Audiencia Nacional de España. Garzón cobró fama internacional cuando inculpó a las antiguas fuerzas militares chilenas, incluyendo al dictador Augusto Pinochet, por cargos de genocidio, crímenes contra la humanidad y por el terrorismo y las torturas infringidas durante la dictadura de 1976 a 1983. Recientemente ha imputado cargos contra el régimen de Franco por crímenes contra la humanidad y ha ordenado la exhumación de los cadáveres de la Guerra Civil que se encuentran en fosas comunes. Baltasar Garzón is one of the six investigating judges for Spain’s National Court. His function is to investigate the cases that are assigned to him by the court,

gathering evidence and evaluating whether the case should be brought to trial. He does not try the cases himself. Garzón rose to prominence as international figure with his indictment of leaders of the former Chilean military junta, including dictator Augusto Pinochet, on charges of genocide, terrorism and torture during 1976-1983 dictatorship. Most recently he has brought charges against the Franco regime for crimes against humanity, and ordered the exhumation of mass graves from Spain's bloody Civil War (1936-39).

Este poeta granadino ha publicado más de 10 poemarios y varios libros de ensayo, convirtiéndose

en uno de los escritores españoles más importantes de nuestro tiempo. Su obra ha sido premiada en diversas ocasiones llegando a ganar el Premio Nacional de la Crítica en 2003. El día 3 de marzo la Universidad de Washington abrirá sus puertas para albergar todos los sentimientos que expresan las líneas de sus poemas puestos en labios del propio autor.

This poet from Granada has published more than 10 collections of poems and several essays. He is one of the most important writers of our times. His work has been prizewinning several times; even he won the National Review Award in 2003. The University of Washington will host all the feelings that are expressed in his poems.

Jordi Savall y su aclamada banda Hesperión XXI regresan a

Seattle con su obra Lux Feminae, un homenaje a las mujeres con la música

instrumental del Medievo y del Renacimiento. Una invocación a la

feminidad como la llave al mundo espiritual que desprende misticismo,

sensualidad, amor, dolor y sabiduría. Savall lidera una banda de 8 músicos

donde se incluye el arpa, un oud, una cítara, flautas y una lira de arco. El

espectáculo comenzará con una ponencia a las 7 pm / Jordi Savall and his

acclaimed ensemble Hesperion XXI return to Seattle with Lux Feminae,

homage to the women in medieval and Renaissance song and instrumental

music. An invocation of femininity as the key to the spiritual world, it is told

through seven contrasting musical moods depicting mysticism, sensuality,

motherhood, love, grief, rejoicing, and wisdom. Savall leads an ensemble of

eight, including voices, harp, oud, cithara, psaltry, flutes, rebab, lira d’arco,

and percussion. A pre-concert lecture begins at 7 pm.

Con motivo de la presidencia española de la Unión Europea durante el primer semestre de 2010, Seattle

acoge una serie de conferencias impartidas por reconocidas figuras del ámbito político europeo. To

mark the occasion of the Spanish presidency in the European Union during the first semester of 2010,

Seattle hosts the European Union Month with a series of conferences on the EU.

EU MODEL – West European Studies 23 Y 24 de abril/April 23rd and 24th

El Model EU es un simulacro de cumbre de jefes de Estado y de gobierno de la UE que el EU Center of Excellence organiza cada año. Equipos de estudiantes de distintas universidades de la costa oeste representan las delegaciones de los 27 Estados miembros y negocian sobre materias que figuran en la agenda de la Presidencia de turno de la UE. El discurso de apertura estará a cargo de un miembro del Parlamento Europeo Español. The Model EU is a simulation of a European Council Summit. Teams made up of two undergraduate students playing the roles of representatives of EU member state delegations. This year, the students will negotiate issues that will be discussed during the Spanish Presidency of 2010. A Spanish member of the European Parliament to talk in the opening ceremony.

SEATTLE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Con más de 550 proyecciones de 250 películas y 125 cortos en 25 días, SIFF es el festival de mayor

duración en Estados Unidos. Este año la sección en español contará con 25 películas y la presencia de

tres importantes directores del panorama cinematográfico español. / With over 550 screenings of 250

features and 125 shorts in 25 days, SIFF is the largest film festival in the United States. This year three

of the most important Spanish filmmakers will be invited to attend the Festival.

CENTRO ESPAÑOL DE RECURSOS/CENTER FOR SPANISH STUDIES El Centro Español de Recursos (Center for Spanish Studies) situado en la Universidad de Washington, Seattle, organiza regularmente actividades de formación para profesores de español como lengua extranjera. 1. POESÍA EN EL AULA DE ELE / POETRY IN THE CLASS OF ELE

Debido al interés por llevar la poesía al aula explorando posibilidades didáctico-pedagógica, se propone esta actividad conjunta anual entre el Center for Spanish Studies y Juan de Fuca. Los ponentes serán los elogiados poetas Jorge Enrique González Pacheco, Eugenia Toledo. Participan en este taller, la AATSP (Asociación de profesores de español y portugués) y el Instituto Cervantes de Seattle en colaboración con Lakeside School. According with the interest for the Poetry in the class, and exploring the didactic-pedagogical possibilities. There will be a workshop for teachers. The speaker will be important poets like Enrique González Pachecho, Eugenia Toledo. In collaboration with AATSP (Association of teacher of Spanish and Portuguese), Lakeside School and the Instituto Cervantes Seattle.

El objetivo de esta actividad es poner en común las técnicas y procedimientos que se pueden usar para elaborar materiales para la enseñanza de español. Dependiendo del nivel de enseñanza, los materiales didácticos se enfocarán más hacia el trabajo de unas u otras áreas de lengua y cultura hispánicas. The objective of this activity is to study the trainer to elaborate materials for the Spanish Teaching. Depends of the teaching level, these didactical material will be in focus to the different levels of the Spanish language and the Hispanic culture.

3. CINE Y LITERATURA EN LA CLASE DE ESPAÑOL/ CINEMA AND LITERATURE IN THE SPANISH

Parte de las películas que se proyectan en salas públicas están basadas, aún remotamente, en obras literarias. Esta conexión se intentará explorar durante esta actividad de formación, cuyo objetivo es unir cine y literatura y su uso posterior en el aula de ELE (español lengua extranjera) y que se realizará durante el Festival Internacional de Cine de Seattle (SIFF). Some of the films, which are projected in the public cinemas, are based on the literary works. This connection is going to be explored during this workshop. The objective is to join the cinema and the literature and the use in the class of Spanish as a foreign language. This workshop will take place framed in the Seattle International Film Festival.
