My name is Shane Cary I have been around firearms my whole life My first experience with a firearm was when I was four years of age My dad first taught me basic firearm handling and safety by taking out an HK USP model pellet gun and teaching me to always make sure its unloaded by locking back the slide and looking into the chamber when someone hands you any type of firearm We would practice this every day about ten times Then when I got the technique down using a pistol we started practicing with a bb gun rifle After I learned basic firearms handling and safety with the bb pistol and rifle my dad took me to the EFampGA range where he taught me to drop the magazine clear the chamber and safely put the firearm down before back-ing behind the yellow line when you are done firing the rifle
My dad started taking me to North County Firearms to buy ammo and other awesome firearm and shooting gear That is where I met Patrick Russ who told me about the Junior Rifle Program at the EFampGA range and asked if I might be interested in competing I of course was immediately thrilled with the idea of shooting with other kids and having a coach instructing me on how to breathe use trigger control natural point of aim and sight in my rifle After a few shoots I was getting better and better and learning new things every time
After a few years of going to the EFampGA range with my family I learned to shoot a SIG 40 1911 45 Mosquito 22 Ruger 22 revolver AR15 Cricket 22 and many more I got my first rifle was when I was about nine My dad and I built a tan AR15 with a desert Marpat camo sling It took us about 2 months to get all the parts and assemble the rifle That rifle is still the best rifle my dad and I have Once I got into cowboys bull riding and old west movies I bought a Henry 22 lever action rifle
JR CORNERwith the money I saved up I sure thought I was the stuff when I showed up at rodeos with my Smith and Wesson belt buckle and Justin boots

Then Patrick Russ sent my dad an email saying they had started a junior pistol shoot and wanted to see if I was interested in shooting in the first relay for the first shoot You could probably guess what my answer was When I got to the range I helped put up the targets listened to the safety brief and lined up with a coach behind the yel-low line It was cold and the fog was just starting to clear when I stepped up to the line and took my first twenty shots at the target for the slow fire portion of the shoot When the firing ended we backed behind the yellow line and turned on the cold range lights We then walked out to grab our targets and handed them to the target col-lector When we started the rapid fire portion of the shoot my coach reminded me that I had ten seconds to fire five rounds I loaded five rounds into each of the two magazines I had laying to the left of my pistol When I was finished firing my twenty rounds into the rapid fire target we repeated the safety drill and collected our targets and once again handed them to the target col-lector We then finished the shoot with a safety debrief and a good cinnamon roll
On the drive home I told my dad all about my target and the shoot Later I found out I shot first place and was thrilled At my next shoot I got invited to join the junior coaching team and was told to walk up and down the shooting line looking for any safety issues and fetching am-munition for other coaches The shoot after that I got to coach my first shooter I was super nervous and was worried that I was going to mess up but I pulled myself together and just kept my eye on the firearm and instructed my shooter on sight alignment trigger control breathing and safety It was a pretty crazy feeling to see my shooterrsquos target and feel like I had something to do with his success I feel have I taken away a lot from being a coach I have made friends and being around firearms has made me a better person and a better defender of the Second Amendment I am proud to be a member of the Escondido Fish and Game Association

One of the duties of the Chief Range Master is to conduct a safety walk-thru for new members and kids who wish to become a
part of our various junior and youth programsThe kidrsquos parent(s) must accompany them on the walk where I and assisting Chiefs are able to truly emphasize our organizationrsquos commitment to all
aspects of firearm safety It has been a satisfying experience for me For many of the kids it is the beginning of a lifelong love of the shooting sports and I appreciate the opportunity to help them develop a good safe start
One of our talented board members Darrin Eaton devised a shaker device that works similar to a trommel Using his device we were able to recover over 4000 pounds of lead from just a small portion of the pistol range during the last clean-up So far we have recovered the best part of 5000 pounds Trust me folks it sounds like a lot but it is a small fraction of what is there The youth programs should benefit greatly from the sale of the lead Thanks Darrin and to all the folks who helped to process all that material
On occasion I receive an offhand report that an RSO spoke to a member or guest in a manner that ruffled some feathers Every member should be aware that an RSO is expected to converse in a respectful manner but depending on the situation and the memberrsquos response it can be a challenge to say the least If you feel that you have been slighted in some way you can always send me an email and I shall be happy to investigate If necessary the matter can even be referred to the Board of Directors You will be given a fair and thoughtful hearing It would be helpful to make sure you know the rules and SOP for our range I can assure you that our RSOs review them often Far more people tell me that our RSOs are courteous and helpful when on duty than anything to the contrary
There is an emerging issue that I see as becoming more prevalent as more people purchase and use shorter barreled rifles such as an AR-15 with a 24rdquo barrel It is difficult to bring the muzzle up to the red line to fire As a result a shooter on a bench to the right can easily wind up with his head virtually on line with the muzzle of the AR-15 and on the receiving end of a face full of hot brass or brass down the back of his neck The problem is somewhat exacerbated by the fact that AR-15 shooters tend to fire more rounds than a typical bolt action rifle shooter So what is the solution Is there a solution Am I imagining a problem that doesnrsquot exist Think about it and send me an email with your thoughts Now I know that you all think I have all the answers but truth be told there are a few problems that I have not figured out yet Thank you for your input

Kitchen Story By Norm Porst
So just how do you remodel and upgrade a kitchen in less than thirty days Simple You surround yourself with motivated dedicated and professional people It starts with a Board of Directors that wants to continue this Associationrsquos excellence through improvements and maintenance
At the Board meeting on February 4th the Board approved funds for the kitchen project At the general meeting on February 11th this was announced to the membership with instructions to clear the kitchen of any keepsakes or say goodbye to them forever On Sunday February 14th Lucy Juli Linda and Marianne started us off by completely removing (and throwing away) ldquostuffrdquo from the kitchen This gave me and my crew a great start on the following Monday
The first week was demolition rough electric and rough plumbing Four new circuits were added and a water line was run to the refrigerator location Stove gas line and HVAC electric were put into the wall
The second week was drywall and paint It is hard to describe just how much drywall was removed to accomplish the rough ins but it was substantial It was replaced taped skim coated and painted
The third week was set aside for new cabinets to be installed At this time many pick up items start to take place such as a new fire extinguisher cabinet phone towel container fans etc etc
The fourth and final week brought new counter tops sink faucet water heater bulletin board and much moreThe kitchen was done under budget and at a great cost But this would not have happened without the help of those dedicated and professional people mentioned above I would like to acknowledge and thank the followingbull Rick Ross EFampG member and owner of Big Pine Construction Escondido Supplied much labor and material at no costbull Duane Wright EFampG member Nevell Group Inc San Diego Supplied all drywall labor and material at no costJim Wong EFampG member and co-owner of Jim-n-I Systems San Marcos Supplied cabinets at a reduced cost plus extrasbull Danny Rios owner E amp G Builders Valley Center Supplied Paint and labor at a reduced cost plus extrasAt the time of this submittal we are still waiting for our new windows Hopefully at press time they will be installedbull The kitchen was turned over to the Association at the general meeting on March 10th 29 DAYS woo hoo
We hope our members appreciate your Associations efforts and will help keep this kitchen looking new and functional for many years
