Once Upon a Time... Sound Like You?● Went to school● Worked hard● Played by the rules● Didn't complain● Hoped you'd get "noticed" by management● Believed you'd get the pay you deserved
TODAY: You're doing a job you don't love, working for people you don't respect, and wondering...
"Where did I go wrong?!"
Step 1: Gain Perspective
You've Been Following the Wrong Rules!
● School doesn't teach you how to get the job, or what career is right for you.
● Employers don't recognize you for doing your job because they already pay you to do it.
● The ONLY way to feel truly satisfied is when you decide what you want and go after it.
REALITY CHECK: Simply applying for available jobs and taking what's out there is outdated and career-limiting.
It's time to make your own rules!
Step 2: Luminate the Goal
Career Independence Means...
● Get paid fairly for your performance with no cap on what you can earn.
● Ability to "design your destiny" in
terms of having a career that can change as you change. (i.e. marriage, children, etc.)
● Do something that helps others in their
lives and feel a sense of purpose and meaning in your work.
● Work and learn from people you
respect. Better still, be your own boss!
Step 3: Own Your Actions
Do You Act 'Entitled?' (Not Good!)
Entitled workers...
● Expect their employer to constantly praise them.
● Make excuses and blame others when they don't succeed.
● Want raises every year for showing up on time and doing their work.
● Aren't willing to invest extra time and money into their career as a way to earn more later.
Or, Are You 'Enlightened?' (Very Good!)
Enlightened workers...
● See themselves as a business-of-one who needs to keep their main client happy.
● Plan ways to earn more money and build partnerships to make it happen.
● Invest in themselves and take calculated risks as a way to grow their business-of-one.
Step 4: Work it Daily
The Boiling Pot Theory Works!
You don't have to work 60 hours per week and burn yourself out. HOWEVER...
● You do need to work every day, using a clear strategy.
● Career independence is earned through
consistent effort. #1 reason people fail at creating career independence...
They give up too early!
(It's not hard, but it takes patience.)
