A beginning, And a finishing up

The photos on the back cover of this catalog introduce a major collection of english copper, tin and bronze coins formed by someone I have known since the 1970s, frank robinson. I knew he was an

attorney and administrative law judge who also ran coin auctions. I had noticed that he was an active numismatist traveling to follow his interests to such places as Moscow. I did not know how serious he had been as a collector until I began going through his english collection. In addition to many of the earlier milled issues, he has put together a nearly complete run of later (Victoria and on) base metal coins in generally outstanding condition (‘sorry, no 1933 penny). I have been keeping records on milled issues from Victoria on for several years in order to represent values fairly for Coin World and I am keenly aware of how infrequently mint state examples of relatively common issues are found. The 43 lots offered here are just a sample of what will be a large bloc in our major february 2017 sale, Auction 36.

Our last few sales, beginning with our major sale last February, have benefitted from a serious collector who consigned his excellent collection of english coins plus some ancient coins and a group of united States type coins. Most of the u.S. pieces in this catalog are from that collection. There is more—some gold including a particularly rare Carson City mint half eagle, some desirable and affordable Greek and Roman coins, a good run of British hammered including a few exceptional pieces, some good tokens and some appealing earlier uS type coins.

our next catalog, out in late December, will be our 36th major auction. In addition to coins from the Robinson collection there will be some exceptional Greek silver including fractionals, high grade

and special roman, a strong section of british hammered, some outstanding tokens and medals, and an appealing run of mostly “raw” American type coins.

Best wishes for that wonderful period of reflection and anticipation that marks the end of a year.

109 Charles II. 1660-1685. Copper halfpenny. 11.36 gm. 29 mm. 1673. His bust left / Britannia seated. S. 3393. Peck 510. Very Fine; even brown tone; light old scratch across portrait (deliberate?); good metal. $150

110 William and Mary. 1689-1694. Copper halfpenny. 10.63 gm. 27 mm. 1694. Their conjoined busts right; GVLIELMVS• — ET• MARIA around / Britannia seated left; BRITAN — NIA • around; 1694 below. S. 3452. Peck 602. Extremely Fine; fresh surfaces with rich and even brown tone; minor flan flaws and striking weaknesses though the portraits are exceptional. (This outstanding portrait resulted from a strike that left the reverse weakly struck.) $750 The quality of copper flans in this era was problematic in terms of how well the flan was made at the time of striking and how the surfaces aged. This is one of the most appealing examples of this issue I have seen. It is substantially better than the Newman example Heritage sold in 2014. Proof issues of William and Mary were better made and have fared better over the centuries but as a currency issue, this piece is exceptional. (AD)

$150166 Lot of 68 uS uncirculated Mint Sets, Special Mint Sets, eisenhower 40% unc.

1963 PD (1, scarce); 65 SpecialMS (5); 66 SpecialMS (5); 67 SpecialMS (5); 1968 PDS (5); 1969 PDS (5); 1970 PDS (3); 1971 PDS (5); 1972 PDS (4); 1973 PDS (1); 1974 PDS (3);1975 PD (3, scarce); 1976 PD (3); 1977 PD (3); 1978 PD (2); 1979 PD (3); 1980 PDS (3); 1981 PDS (5); plus (3) 1971S and (1) 1972S eisenhower uncirculated silver dollars (40% silver). Mint State.

Special Mint Sets were issued for 1965, 66 and 67, years in which no proof sets were issued. They were struck from “specially prepared and polished blanks and struck on high tonnage presses with polished dies.” (from the Mint Director note included in the 1965 set).

Though the uS Mint did not do anything special for any of the sets other than 1965 through 1967, the coins were taken from the production line and packaged for the sets. Consequently, the “bagginess” that can result from mint bags or rolled coins does not affect these examples which tend to be among the best circulation strikes available. The estimate is well under the 2017 Red Book value of over $675 and reflects current wholesale listing.

end of auction. Thank you for your interest!

Thinking of selling your collection? or parts of it?

We would be happy to make you an offer!

Since we issued our first printed sale sheet in 1969 while still students at the University of Minnesota, we have been fortunate to handle thousands of fascinating coins of all types -- American, European, and World from all eras, ancient Greek and Roman and, of course, coins, tokens and medals of the british Isles. We will bring the experience and enthusiasm we have exhibited for forty years to your collection. We have helped form some exceptional collections. When there is material outside our specialties of Greek, Roman, and British, we can call upon a depth of knowledge about the coin market generally, as well as contacts who specialize in those other areas. our membership in the restrictive International Association of Professional numismatists means that we have personal relationships with the most important dealers in the world. Contact us if you would like to discuss your collection--whether as a project in progress, as something that needs a valuation, or as an asset you would like to cash out. In a time when major auction firms pride themselves on following the business school dictum to “not own inventory” and individual consignments can get lost in huge catalogs that can weigh several pounds, we can offer your coins in a small scale specialized format that gives optimal attention to all your material. Or we are happy to give you a cash offer for your coins. When the time comes for someone else to treasure what you have owned for a while, we would be delighted to give your collection the same careful attention we give all items we offer. We can travel to meet with you. We can arrange for a fedex shipment at our expense. We carry private insurance to cover the value of your collection while it is in transit.
