MLS GAME INFORMATION

Houston had a chance to steal the game late, but it was thwarted when defender Aurélien Collin and goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen combined to stop Brian Ownby’s shot in the 90th minute.

Dynamo goalkeeper Tally Hall had four saves, while Nielsen was credited with two, for their respective shutouts. Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear made no changes to the team that reached a scoreless draw with the

Chicago Fire at BBVA Compass Stadium. HOUSTON DYNAMO (4-3-3): Tally Hall - Andre Hainault, Jermaine Taylor, Bobby Boswell, Corey Ashe - Luiz

Camargo (Warren Creavalle 66), Adam Moffat, Brad Davis - Boniek Garcia, Will Bruin (Brian Ching 66), Macoumba Kandji (Brian Ownby 80).

TEAM NEWS The Dynamo have played to back-to-back scoreless draws, recording defensive shutouts for the third time this

season. “I thought the whole back four defended pretty well,” head coach Dominic Kinnear said. "It’s a work in progress.

Defensively we’re looking good, and on the attacking side there’re some things we need to work on, which is fine.”

For a third consecutive match, all since the inclusion of Honduran international Boniek Garcia, Kinnear maintained his scheme with a trio of central midfielders and Will Bruin at the spearhead of the attack.

“It’s a system where guys clog the middle and make it tough for teams to play through,” defender Bobby Boswell said. “When the guys in front of us are working their tails off it makes our job a lot easier. We’re just picking up pieces and balls that get through, but tonight, and the last couple of games, it’s been the guys in front of us doing all the hard work and we’re there to clean it up if it gets through.”

With Geoff Cameron sidelined for a second consecutive match with a hamstring strain, Jermaine Taylor reprised his role in central defense.

“He’s been good all year,” Kinnear said. “I think he’s just up for the challenge. He hasn’t played for Jamaica by mistake. He’s strong, quick and a good passer of the ball. Last year, we didn’t see the best of him because he picked up an injury, but this year we’re seeing the best of Jermaine.”

Said goalkeeper Tally Hall: “I think we have a fairly deep team where guys can come in and play different positions. We have some internationals that come in and step up for Geoff Cameron. It is a good system, where guys have been given the opportunity to come in and play well, so I think the team has done a fantastic job with covering for each other and working hard. The last two games have been shutouts.”

Adam Moffat has filled a holding role in central midfield, with Brad Davis and Luiz Camargo tucked into central roles.

“We always have guys so that when one guy falls out another guy needs to step up and do the job. I think we have a good team, and unfortunately we have been without Geoff the last two games, but Adam stepped in the spot that he’s been and I think he has done a good job,” said Davis.

Mac Kandji and Boniek Garcia have filled the wide roles in Kinnear’s 4-3-3 scheme. “The trick is to play the ball from out wide and try to release the wings one-v-one. If you can put the ball outside

and get the outside backs involved, me and [García] and Will and hopefully a midfielder can put a lot of options in the box and put the ball in the back of the net,” Kandji said. “ … I’ve never been a defensive guy and all the teams I’ve played on they’ve never asked me to do the defensive work. In this formation, I have to put in the defensive work. I think Dom [Kinnear, Dynamo head coach] appreciates that and my teammates appreciate that.”

The United match kicks off a run of three consecutive games at BBVA Compass Stadium for the Dynamo, still unbeaten (4-0-3) in league play in their new home.

“We go back home now and we are kind of catching up in our games at home in the heat. It starts to play on you but Dom is good about letting us rest and recover and he mixes up the lineup,” said Davis. “We are at home and we are undefeated there and we want to stay that way and hopefully we can pick up some wins and pick up some big points that we need to start getting now.”

D.C. UNITED D.C. United return to action after a full week off, their last match a 3-0 win against the Montréal Impact on June 30 at RFK Stadium. United are in a tie for first place in the Eastern Conference with 33 points from 18 games. LAST MATCH

United opened the lead in first-half stoppage time. After picking the ball up inside the Impact half, Chris Pontius raced toward goal, turning a defender before thumping a left-footed shot inside the back post.

The lead was doubled five minutes into the second half. Branko Boskovic whipped a left-footed free kick from the right into the heart of the penalty area that Robbie Russell headed past a helpless Evan Bush in the Impact goal.

United completed the scoreline in second-half stoppage time, when Hamdi Salihi smashed home a rebound from a saved Nick DeLeon shot from close range.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

United head coach Ben Olsen made three changes to the team that suffered a 3-2 defeat by the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena. Andy Najar, Branko Boskovic and Maicon Santos came into the team, in place of Danny Cruz, Nick DeLeon and Hamdi Salihi.

D.C. UNITED (4-3-1-2): Bill Hamid - Robbie Russell, Brandon McDonald, Dejan Jakovic, Daniel Woolard - Andy Najar, Perry Kitchen, Chris Pontius - Branko Boskovic (Lewis Neal 60) - Dwayne De Rosario (Nick DeLeon 75), Maicon Santos (Hamdi Salihi 79).

TEAM NEWS Chris Pontius scored his fourth goal in the last three games, scoring four consecutive goals in a row for United. “One of our goals this year is to take back RFK and make it a fortress to play against us this year, and I think

we’ve done that. We always say if we win at home then we find the road to be a playoff team,” Pontius said. “So, we are winning at home and we are doing all right on the road as well. We need to get a couple more results on the road and boost ourselves and create the gap between us and some of the top teams in the East.”

It was his first start in a wide midfield role since the opening two matches of the season, after starting eight games as an out-and-out striker.

“Chris is unique, right? He has these attributes, and you can put him up top or underneath and also out wide. When he faces people he does a very good job. We’ve seen that before. He sometimes just opens up to hit it with his right foot, and he also has the ability to cut balls and deal with his left, so he’s a pretty complete player in that sense,” said Olsen. “I worried a little about putting him back out on the flank, just about taking him out of a place he was successful in, but I thought he did a good job.”

Dwayne De Rosario took over the MLS league lead with his 10th assist, his second in as many games, setting up Pontius’ opener.

“It’s a product of where he has been playing on the field,” Olsen said. “As of late, he has been around the goal and he seems to step up and do the job with whatever position we put him in.” Said Pontius: “He obviously adapts. He has done it with a number of different teams, too. To be consistently that good, it shows a lot.”

Branko Boskovic now has four assists on the season, all coming in the last five matches, returning to the starting lineup after coming off the bench in back-to-back games.

“He again changes us up, in particular against a team that’s going to sit back. He’s a guy with ideas, and he plays with the right pace. I thought he had a good night and he got an assist on the goal,” Olsen said.

Boskovic came off at the hour mark, replaced by Lewis Neal – who filled the central midfield spot after figuring out wide in his first appearances for United.

“We’ve been waiting to put him in [the midfield], we know he can play here and we know he understands that position,” said Olsen. “It’s just that we’ve had more of a need for him in the left midfield at times, and left back as well. It’s just another position we know he can play now, and he’s just a versatile, smart kid.”

Robbie Russell also scored his first goal for United, in his 15th league appearance this season after four seasons with Real Salt Lake.

“It's always great to get your first goal for a new club – it means a lot to me. It's just me building my own reputation and building my own love of D.C. United. This club means a lot to me. But I'll still take that zero over the goal,” Russell said.

season games at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston. The Dynamo are 4‐0‐3 at home this year and have not lost a home

game in over a year, with their last home defeat on June 18, 2011, a 2‐0 loss to the Columbus Crew. The Dynamo are

unbeaten in 16 consecutive home games (playoffs included), spanning the final nine games at Robertson Stadium and the

first seven games at BBVA Compass Stadium.

Dynamo complete “first half”: The Dynamo played their 17th regular season game on July 3 to complete the “first half” of

mark (45 GF, 41 GA) and 49 points to finish in second place in the East. Nine of Houston’s first 17 games were at home in

2011, while seven of the first 17 games have been at home in 2012.

Bruin bags ninth goal: Dynamo forward Will Bruin scored his ninth goal of the season with a first‐half equalizer on June 23

at Montreal. The second‐year forward is tied for fourth in the MLS Golden Boot race with Thierry Henry, Chris Pontius and

Danny Koevermans. The four players trail Chris Wondolowski (14 goals) and Kenny Cooper (11).

Bruin in elite sophomore company: Forward Will Bruin is in elite company for second‐year players in MLS. Bruin is third

teams.  Houston has nine games remaining on the Eastern stretch and is 2‐3‐6 overall vs. the Eastern Conference. The next

time the Dynamo face a team from the Western Conference is Sept. 6, when they host Real Salt Lake.

Dynamo newcomer Boniek García makes impressive debut: Honduran midfielder Boniek García made his debut in the

Dynamo starting lineup on June 30 against Philadelphia and made immediate contributions. García began the sequence and

earned an assist on Brad Davis’ opening goal and was a part of the buildup before Brian Ching earned a penalty kick in the

second half. García played 90 minutes in his MLS debut. The 27‐year‐old Designated Player played for Honduran

powerhouse C.D. Olimpia since 2007 after his first tenure with the club from 2003‐06. With García, Olimpia captured the

2011‐12 Honduran League Apertura and Clausura championships. The midfielder debuted for the Honduras national team

in 2005 and has 69 appearances for his country, including five appearances in the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The

Dynamo will face Olimpia in CONCACAF Champions League group play on Aug. 30 in Honduras and Oct. 23 in Houston.

Ching ties Preki on MLS all‐time goal list: Dynamo forward Brian Ching scored his 79th career MLS regular season goal

with his game‐winning penalty on June 30 vs. Philadelphia. Ching tied Preki, the Serbian‐born U.S. international who

tallied 79 goals for Kansas City and Miami from 1996‐2005. With Ching’s next goal, he will tie Josh Wolff (still active with

D.C. United) and Brian McBride for 12th on the all‐time scoring list.

Ching passes Ralston on game‐winning goals list: Ching’s goal on June 30 also marked his 20th career MLS regular season

game‐winning goal. The game‐winner moved Ching past Dynamo assistant coach Steve Ralston, New York forward

Kenny Cooper and Roy Lassiter for 12th on the all‐time chart.

Page 16: Dynamo vs. D.C. United game guide

More Bruin: Bruin has 14 regular season goals in his two‐year career. With his next goal, he will tie Stuart Holden for

fourth on the franchise list. Bruin has already surpassed his 2011 total for shots on goal, with 24 this year after posting 23

shots on goal in 2011.

Bruin in historic Dynamo territory: Bruin’s 9 goals are the most for a Dynamo player since Brian Ching set a franchise

record with 13 goals in 2008. Bruin reached 9 goals in the fastest number of games (15) in team history. Ching reached 9

goals in Houston’s 16th game in 2006, but Ching missed six of those games due to U.S. men’s national team duties for the

2006 World Cup. Ching scored his ninth goal of 2006 in his tenth game of the season. Bruin’s 9 goals in 2012 have come in a

12‐game stretch (April 15 at Chicago to present). The next two best goal‐scoring stretches in Dynamo history are Ching in

2008, when he scored 9 goals in his first 18 games played (the 9 goals came in a 12‐game stretch) and Dwayne De Rosario,

who scored 9 goals in a 21‐game span in 2006.

Three in a row for Bruin: Will Bruin scored in three consecutive games (6/16, 6/20, 6/23) for the second time this season

(4/15, 4/21, 4/28), with four goals in each three‐game scoring streak. He is the first Dynamo player with a pair of three‐

game scoring streaks in the same season, and just the second player to record two streaks overall (Ching). His current

streak marks the sixth time a Dynamo player has scored in three consecutive games (Bruin 2012 (twice); Ching 2006, 2008;

Joseph Ngwenya 2007; Stuart Holden 2009). No Dynamo player has ever scored in four consecutive games.

Boswell is Mr. Reliable: Dynamo defender Bobby Boswell has played full time in 28 consecutive MLS matches (playoffs

included) dating to Sept. 14, 2011 at Columbus. The center back is the only Dynamo field player to play every minute of

every MLS game in 2012. Boswell has now started 129 regular season games with the Dynamo and is now third on the

franchise list for regular season starts.

Possession: The Dynamo have won the possession battle in 14 of 18 games on the season. The Dynamo narrowly lost the

possession battle to Sporting KC on Saturday, 50.2%‐49.8%, had 61% possession vs. Chicago on July 3, 55% vs. Philadelphia,

lost the possession battle, 53‐47%, at Montreal, had 63% possession vs. Toronto, 54% against FC Dallas, 54% at Vancouver,

60% vs. LA, 62% at New England, 60% vs. Portland, 56% vs. D.C., 53% at New York, 54% at D.C., a 49‐51% disadvantage at

Columbus, 55% at Chicago, 56% at Seattle, a disadvantage (48‐52%) at San Jose, and 53% at Chivas USA.

Dynamo productive in final 15 minutes: Ching’s goal in the 83rd minute on June 30 was Houston’s sixth goal in the final 15

minutes of games this year. The Dynamo are in tied for fourth in the league in goals scored in the final 15 minutes (San Jose

leads with 13). Last year, Houston scored 14 goals in the final 15 minutes of games, the second most in MLS (Seattle).

Dynamo are defensive in final 15 minutes: Houston has allowed the fewest goals in MLS (1) after the 75th minute. The

only goal conceded by Houston in the final quarter hour was June 10 at Vancouver, when Jordan Harvey scored in the 88th

minute.

Ching ties Mullan for second on assists chart: With his assist on June 23 at Montreal, Brian Ching reached 19 regular

season assists with the Dynamo to move into a tie for second with Brian Mullan on the franchise list.

Champions League schedule announced: The Dynamo learned its schedule in Group 3 of the 2012‐2013 CONCACAF

Champions League on June 22. Houston will open group play with two road games – Aug. 22 at C.D. FAS of El Salvador

and Aug. 30 at C.D. Olimpia of Honduras. The Dynamo will host FAS on Sept. 20 and Olimpia on Oct. 23 at BBVA

Compass Stadium. The group winner will advance to the quarterfinals, set for March 2013. The Dynamo qualified for the

tournament by advancing to the 2011 MLS Cup Final. This is the fifth appearance for the Dynamo in the regional

championship, including semifinal runs in the 2007 and 2008 Champions Cup tournaments. It is the first appearance for the

Dynamo in Champions League since they advanced to the quarterfinals in 2008‐2009.

is 0‐4‐1 when trailing at the interval after its comeback draw with Toronto on June 20.

Cameron, Hainault, Taylor, Watson return from national duty: Three members of Houston’s heralded backline and regular

starting midfielder Je‐Vaughn Watson returned from national duty for the June 16 match against FC Dallas after missing

the June 10 game at Vancouver. Geoff Cameron played the second half off USA’s 1‐1 draw at Guatemala on June 12. The

center back also played 90 minutes in a friendly vs. Scotland on May 26. Andre Hainault was called in by Canada and

played 90 minutes in a friendly vs. the U.S.  and 90 minutes in both of Canada’s Olympic qualifiers against Cuba and

Honduras to reach 28 caps. Watson started three matches for Jamaica, including a 2‐1 win over Guatemala and a 0‐0 draw

First Comeback Win: The Dynamo recorded a 2‐1 win on May 26 over the LA Galaxy for their first come‐from‐behind win

of the season. Prior to the Galaxy game, the Dynamo were 0‐3‐1 on the season when allowing the first goal of the game.

Daytime Dominance: Houston’s 3‐1 loss at Vancouver on June 10 was its first loss in a day game this season, with its record

dropping to 4‐1. The Dynamo have daytime wins over Chivas USA, San Jose, D.C. United and the Galaxy. The Dynamo are

2‐4‐5 at night, but eight of the 11 night games have been on the road. Houston has two more day games this season (July 28

at Toronto FC and Sept. 29 at Philadelphia).

Cameron’s streak ends: Geoff Cameron missed the May 26 game with the Galaxy while playing for the U.S. in its 5‐1 win

over Scotland. It was the first MLS game that Cameron missed since May 4, 2011 vs. Colorado. Prior to May 26, Cameron

had started and played full time in 40 consecutive matches (playoffs included), the longest streak among Houston field

players in team history. Cameron played 3,576 consecutive minutes in MLS play (playoffs included) before his latest

absence. In a similar feat, Brad Davis’ streak of 45 consecutive starts was broken at Chicago on April 15 due to a calf strain.

BBVA Compass Stadium opener: The Dynamo opened the 13th soccer‐specific stadium in Major League Soccer on May 12.

Barrett, Pat Onstad, Eddie Robinson and Craig Waibel in a pregame ceremony that included the unveiling of 2006 and

2007 MLS Cup championship banners. Brad Davis provided a signature opening moment, delivering a beautiful, curling 30‐

Clutch: Luiz Camargo’s 87th‐minute equalizer at New England on May 19 was Houston’s third late goal on the road this

season. Brian Ching’s equalizer in the 81st minute at Columbus on April 21 and Hainault’s game‐winner two minutes into

stoppage time at Chivas USA on March 11 were also reminiscent of 2011 for the Dynamo. Last year, Houston scored 14

goals in the final 15 minutes of games, the second most in MLS (Seattle).

Six years after the club’s first match on April 2, 2006, only two players remain on the Dynamo roster: Brian Ching and Brad

Davis. Defender Eddie Robinson retired in January and joined the front office as an assistant coach with the team’s Youth

Academy and as a color analyst on TV broadcasts.

GAME NOTES

D.C. United All-Stars (Olsen and De Rosario) Recently, D.C. United’s Ben Olsen was named 2012 MLS All-Star game Head Coach. Olsen is the youngest coach to ever be named an MLS All-Star game Head Coach – with the next closest being Thomas Rongen, who coached the Eastern Conference team in 1996 at the age of 39. Just a week ago, United’s Dwayne De Rosario was also named to the MLS All-Star Game First XI, chosen by the fans.

Pontius, Santos, De Rosario among League Leaders After its 3-0 victory over the Montreal Impact on 6/30, D.C. United’s potent attack features two players (Pontius with 9 goals & Santos with 7) in the top ten of the MLS in scoring while United Captain Dwayne De Rosario joins them with a league-leading 10 assists.

Najar to the Olympics United midfielder Andy Najar was called-up by the Honduras U-23 National Team to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games in London and is set to join his fellow countrymen on Monday. Honduras will compete in Group D alongside Morocco, Spain and Japan. The “catrachos” will kickoff the Olympic Football Competition against Morocco on July 26.

D.C. United: 2011 v 2012 The Black-and-Red have already surpassed its 2011 output in terms of wins. It took over six months for United to hit nine wins as the team went 9-13-12 last year. This year, things are drastically different, with the squad surpassing its 2011 output after just three months of play when they downed the Montreal Impact on 6/30 by a score of 3-0.

De Rosario two goals away from 100th MLS tally De Rosario scored his 97th and 98th career goals against Toronto FC on May 19th and is now two tallies away from his 100th MLS goal. The Black-and-Red midfielder/forward already has a League-high nine assists on the season and is slowly creeping up the scoring charts now with 5 goals.

Eleven multi-goal games Through 18 games this season, D.C. United has 11 multi-goal games. The Black-and-Red has netted four goals twice (against FC Dallas and the New York Red Bulls); three goals five different times (against the Houston Dynamo, San Jose Earthquakes, Toronto FC, New England Revolution, and Montreal Impact); and two goals four different times (against the New England Revolution, Toronto FC, New York Red Bulls and Colorado Rapids).

De Rosario leading MLS in assists Dwayne De Rosario is enjoying his role as playmaker and it shows on the stat sheets. With assists against Dallas (2) on 3/30, New England (1) on 4/14, New York (1) on 4/22, Houston (1) on 4/23, San Jose (2) on 5/2, New England (1) on 5/26, and Montreal Impact (1) on 6/3, De Rosario is leading the League in assists (10).

DeRo as maestro Dating back to May 2005, over a span of 41 games with 5 different MLS clubs, Dwayne De Rosario’s side has only lost 3 games in which the 2011 MLS MVP recorded an assist. DeRo, who currently leading the League with 10 assists, has led his team’s to a 27-3-11 record when tallying an assist.

Salihi’s effectiveness Since opening his MLS scoring account on 5/2, Salihi has scored 5 goals in 399 minutes. The natural finisher, acquired from Rapid Vienna in the offseason for his scoring prowess (53 goals in 90 matches in Austria’s top division), Salihi is finding the net at an impressive rate – averaging a goal every 80 minutes of play since his first goal.

United’s ironmen One of the main constants in D.C. United’s lineups this season has been Dwayne De Rosario, Brandon McDonald, and Daniel Woolard. The three have combined to log a total of 4667 minutes this season.

Offensive Consistency United’s offensive scoring-leader Chris Pontius (9 goals) and assist-leader Dwayne De Rosario (10 assists) both head into the July 15th match at Houston Dynamo riding consecutive game streaks for matches with a goal or an assist. Pontius is on a 3-game streak with goals in United’s previous 3 matches against Montreal (1 goal), New York (2 goals) and Philadelphia (1 goal). De Rosario is on a 2-game streak with an assist in the past two matches, while he has also recorded 7 assists in the past 11 matches.

When the time is right The Black-and-Red love to find the net in the 61st to 75th minute timeframe, where they have scored a League-best 10 goals.

Points coming from all over the field D.C. United is leading the MLS with 18 players to record a goal, assist, or both. As a testament to the team’s depth and well roundedness, only one field-player that has stepped on the field this year has yet to tally a point – Emiliano Dudar.

Page 39: Dynamo vs. D.C. United game guide

D.C. United v. Houston Dynamo History D.C. United has met the Houston Dynamo on 14 occasions, with a 4-8-2 all-time record. The two teams have split their meetings this season, each winning by a one-goal margin at home (United with a 3-2 win at RFK on 4/28, and Houston with a 1-0 win at BBVA Compass Stadium on 5/12).

De Rosario’s two MLS Cups with Houston Dwayne De Rosario played a significant role for the Dynamo during his stay in the Lone Star State (2006-2008). DeRo led the expansion team to the MLS Cup in 2006, and scored the fourth and decisive penalty kick in the final versus the New England Revolution to win the title. The midfielder continued his postseason success in 2007, leading Houston to its second consecutive MLS Cup.

Impressive history D.C. United is the most successful professional soccer team in United States history. The club has won four MLS Cups (1996, 1997, 1999, 2004), four Supporters’ Shields for putting together the best regular season record (1997, 1999, 2006, 2007), two U.S. Open Cup titles (1996, 2008) and two international trophies – the CONCACAF Champions Cup and InterAmerican Cup, both in 1998.

Cruz led 2011 Dynamo playoff run D.C. United midfielder Danny Cruz began his MLS career with the Houston Dynamo in 2009 and played there until he was signed by the Black-and-Red in January. He scored his first career MLS goal against D.C. United on May 22, 2010 and now has five goals and seven assists to his name through his short career. The 22-year-old started all four matches of the 2011 MLS Cup Playoffs, including 90 minutes in the final against eventual-champion L.A. Galaxy.

Turning the page Following a fourth straight season without making the post-season, Head Coach Ben Olsen and the technical staff made the difficult decision to part ways with several club veterans. Santino Quaranta (10 seasons in DC), Clyde Simms (7 seasons), Devon McTavish (6 seasons), and Marc Burch (5 seasons) are no longer with the team, which makes Chris Pontius (drafted in 2009) as the longest-tenured player on the team.
