3- Mechanics of Solids

• Statics- equilibrium of a body that is at rest, or the body moves with constant velocity•  Dynamics – deals with accelerated motion of a body

1) Kinematics– analysis of geometric aspects of a motion

2) Kinetics –analysis of the forces that cause the motion

2- Software for the Subject

• MSC Adams- The Multibody Dynamics Simulation Solution “Adams” helps engineers to study the dynamics of moving parts, how loads and forces are distributed throughout mechanical systems

• Matlab (Programming)• Simulink

5- Kinematics of Particles

Kinematics It is the study of the geometry of motion of particles, rigid bodies, etc., disregarding the forces associated with these motions.Kinematics of a particle- motion of a point in space

• Rectilinear MotionA particle moves in a straight line and does not rotate about its centre of mass.

• Circular Motion (Curvilinear Motion) A particle moves along a path of a perfect circle.

• General Plane Motion A particle moves in a plane, which may follow a path that is neither straight nor circular.

5-1 Rectilinear Motion

• Rectilinear Kinematics–specifying the particle’s position, velocity, and acceleration at any instant (time factor)

Page 11: dynamics lectures on kinematics

5-1 Rectilinear Motion

Rectilinear Motion• Position–Single coordinate axis, s–Magnitude of s= distance from origin (O) to current position (P)–Direction: +ve = right of origin; ‐ ve = left of origin

• Displacement–Change in the particle’s position, vector quantity–If particle moves from S1to S2∆s= s2-s1

5-1 Rectilinear Motion (Solve Please)

• An airplane accelerates down a runway at 3.20 m/s2 for 32.8 s until is finally lifts off the ground. Determine the distance traveled before takeoff. (Ans =1720m)

• A car starts from rest and accelerates uniformly over a time of 5.21 seconds for a distance of 110 m. Determine the acceleration of the car. (Ans= 8.10m/s2)

• If by chance you fall from a roof and remain in air for 2.60 seconds, what will be your final velocity at that instance and how far you would be from the roof? (Ans= 25.48m/sec, 33.1m)

5-1 Rectilinear Motion (Solve Please)

• Azhar jumps in a jumping castle to height of 1.1 m. Determine his takeoff speed while striking back. (Ans= 4.64m/sec)

• As an engineer, assume you don’t know the depth of oil level under the earth, on a site. However, you have one pipe which is already well dig in. You dropped a stone through the pipe and you heard sound of stone in oil after 3.41 sec. Determine the depth of the well. (Ans= 57m)

• Now you start saying problems, one by one.
