NO. 182AUGUST ISSUE

As per usual, much of the August issue of DV8 wasput together under the dark, depressing cloud thatcontinues to produce so much rain in what we nowaffectionately call British Summer.

We distributed the July magazines in the rain, went to theSand Polo in the rain, watched Wimbledon in the rain, andgot wet more often than not on our early morning stroll toget a coffee from yes you’ve guessed it the bloody rain. Asa result this issue has taken on a bit of a water theme.Firstly we caught up with local Kite Surfer Craig Sparkswho alongside Sir Richard Branson successfully navigatedthe English Channel by Kite and nearly got arrested in theprocess upon arrival in France. We chatted to local kitesurfing outfits about learning the sport. We got on thewater with a local boat charter business and took a spinaround the bay. We talked boardshorts and bikinis withiboardsport, and met up with local entrepreneur NickiGrainger from ‘What Alice Found’ on the beach to talkshop.

Always the eternal optimist, and in the vain hope thatSummer is infact around the corner, we have dedicatedmuch of our beauty and fashion section to beach attire andlooking good on the beach. Enjoy.

We have also introduced a business section which we aimto expand upon in future issues. We caught up with PRGuru Jane Jones to talk well PR and Party in The ParkEpisode 12 which takes place on the 2nd September. Wehope to see you there.

Here at DV8 we hope we provide a service that’s beneficialto you, the reader. We’re not printing a listings magazinethat emulates ‘Time Out’. We want to provide good qualityeditorial and interesting interviews so please if you areinterested in writing get involved.

Oh and thanks to all our competitors that continue tomake our magazine look good.

Until next time. Enjoy. Digest.

Polish born, Marcin Kolendo, has been living inBournemouth for the last tenyears, and has fallen in lovewith life on the coast. Marcinis now working as a visualeffects artist in London.Although he has to put upwith the daily commute to thecity, in return he gets to workon such films as Inception, TheDark Knight, and Harry Potterand the Deathly Hallows.

When I’m away I really miss my family andrelaxing at the beach. I am also a "coffeeculture" fan, so I love having a peacefulsnack in one of Bournemouth's fantasticcoffee shops somewhere close to the sea.

I think it has to be the fact that myeveryday consists of being with people whomake "magic" happen on the cinemascreens. I get to see the finished films waybefore they premiere in the theatres, attendcast and crew screenings, and take part increative aspects of production. London isextremely creative, and gives you theopportunity to experience theatres, cinemas, clubs, gigs, and events, any time ofthe day.

A very recent achievement I am immenselyproud of is winning a BAFTA - ‘best visualeffects’ – for the last Harry Potter movie. We are all incredibly lucky to live in such a beautiful area, and I’m sure we all enjoy spending time at the beach, or outon the water, but how much attention do we pay when

we’re there? Poole is home to the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Insti-tution), and their lifeboats and lifeguards are on call 24 hours a day tohelp keep us safe.

Since it was founded in 1824, the RNLI has saved more than 139,000 lives from235 stations nationwide, that’s an average of 22 people a day, and their vision isto completely put a stop to preventable loss of life at sea.

Such vision however, comes with a hefty price tag; the RNLI costs £385,000 torun per day, which includes all equipment, training, and maintaining the fleet, but considering how many lives are saved by the teams, it is a small price topay. The organization is completely funded by charitable donations; they re-ceive no help from central government, and the service is almost exclusivelyprovided by volunteers, which I’m sure you’ll agree is an astonishing, andhighly admirable statement to be able to make.

There are several different ways for you to show your support, whether it beby volunteering, fundraising, or a one-off donation, everything is greatly ap-preciated. To find out more, visit their website: rnli.org, or call them on0845 045 6999.

LOCAL FACTSLifeguards in Bournemouth and Poole responded to 1,533incidents in 2011, down from 2,661 in 2010 (a quiet seasondue to the poor weather)

Five lives were saved by lifeguards on Bournemouthbeaches in 2011 - lives that otherwise would have beenlost if the lifeguards had not intervened.

August was the busiest month for the Bournemouth andPoole lifeguards.

Lifeguards responded to 20 incidents involvinginflatables, compared with 8 body boarding incidents

MIKE WINTERBournemouth surfer turned RNLI

lifeguard is geared up for the busy

summer season. It may seem like a

glamourous job, but lifeguards have

to be highly trained in lifesaving and

casualty care, and must be able to

swim 200m in under 3 1/2 minutes,

and run the same distance on sand in

under 40 seconds. It’s a tough job with

a lot of reponsibility, but I’m sure the

sun makes it all worth while.

Sand Polo was no exception. The organisers coped well with thetorrential downpour and although it did affect those wanting to view

the polo it didn’t dampen spirits for the evening parties. Amika, Londonpresented ‘Beach Party the Polo’ bringing a touch of their West End magic toSandbanks. The live music line up was very good and they did a good jobwarming everybody up. The Polo does it’s bit for charity ‘Help for Heroes’and this year attendees raised £2500. Well done we say. For one of the richest men in thecountry, Richard Branson is about asnormal a bloke as you could ever wish

to meet. The chairman of the Virgin Groupmay have built up a personal fortune of$1.4billion over four decades - in doing somaking him one of the most recognisablefigures in the UK. But speaking to the 62-year-old is not how you would imagineconversing with one of the world’s mostfamous businessmen.

“I believe in living life to the full, making themost of every single day,” Branson says inhis unfailingly positive tone. “I just live forthe moment, which is a cliché but it is true. Ihave a great life. I would be a bit sad if Ididn’t make the most of it, wouldn’t I?”

Branson is not wrong when he says he has agreat life - you just have to look at his 74-acre Necker Island home that he shares withwife Joan to recognise that this is a man whogoes by the maxim ‘work hard/play hard’.“It is my favourite place in the entire world. It was love at first sight as soon as I saw it allthose years ago. It’s like being on holidaywhen I’m there because it is such awonderful setting and there are always

parties going on. I wouldn’t want to liveanywhere else.”

Branson left school at 15 with noqualifications – he has built up a worldwideconglomerate that now has over 400companies and happily for buddingentrepreneurs, he has revealed his secrets in anew book LLike a Virgin: Secrets They Won’tTeach you at Business School.

“I get sent so many questions from people –via text, via email, via tweet – that it isimpossible for me to get back to everyone, soI thought I would answer everybody’squestions in one go by writing the book. And I’ve enjoyed it.” So what are Branson’skey pieces of advice?“I always think that forsomething to be successful, it has to be anobvious labour of love for those involved. Iam passionate about all my projects becauseif I’m not passionate about something, whyshould anyone else be?

But the idea must be a great one. If you havea great idea that will improve people’s lives, then you can’t go wrong. You have to haveproducts that people can see will make theirlives better.”

But it isn’t just his inspirational ideas thathave marked Branson out as a visionary, it isthe quality of service too, and his message issimple – go the extra mile. “You will only bea success if you are offering your customerthe best they can find,” he says withcertainty. “It is absolutely vital. If it’s anairline, it has to be the best. If it’s a trainline,it has to be the best. If it’s the internet, it hasto be the best. And if you’re offering thebest, you will earn people’s trust.”

Branson says that business school andqualifications are not the be all and end allfor aspiring businessmen. “I learned tosurvive by doing it, making mistakes as Iwent along, and that can happen today.Anybody can make themselves a success –you just need the idea. And perseverance. Ihave had my share of failures but I’ve neverlet any of them put me off trying somethingelse. You can succeed even if you’ve failed.”

So what of the future? “I want to carry on,definitely,” he says merrily. “I feel fit andhealthy and there is no reason for me to stop. There is still so much to achieve. Who knowswhat tomorrow might bring?”

sponsored kite surfers including Craig. The crossing took around 3 hours and 45 minutes, a lot of patience, and stamina. Although they had originally planned to make the crossing on the Saturday, and made it

nearly half way across, a shift in the wind meant that they then didn’t have best equipment out on thewater to make the most of the conditions, and had to abandon attempts. Finally, the weather on theSunday was perfect, and they were able to complete the challenge 2 years after its inception.

Unsurprisingly however, it was not without its complications, this time not from weatherconditions, but from French immigration, who were less than pleased about the events, sending outmarine helicopters and officers to apprehend them. At this point, as Craig says, the team adopted an‘everyman for himself’ attitude, and the boats turned back to the UK. Luckily however, the surfershad their passports, and as it was around 6:30pm on a Sunday, after a few tense moments, the

authorities let it slide.

It is certainly a fantastic achievement for all involved, and a testament to the fact that anyone, any age,can kite surf. DV8 send a huge congratulations to all those who took part.

Festival season is well and truly upon us, so that means we need fuss-freestyles, I recommend side fishtail plaits and messy buns for an easy but glamway of getting hair off your face and ready to party. Fearne Cotton uses hairextensions to wear her fishtail plaits, but if your hair is long enought, create thelook by splitting hair into two sections, then begin plaiting one section at atime starting loosely at the top and working your way tighter towards theends. Whitney Port and Michelle Keegan on the other hand, show off theirhigh wearing buns with the more texture to the hair the better! Tip your headupside down and tie with elastic on the crown of your head to secure, thenbending and wrapping hair over, pin into place - this works even better ondirty hair, L'Oreal Super Dust is great way of getting more texture and bodyinto your hair for that ‘just off the beach’ look at any time..

HERE ARE FIVE OF THE BEST FAKE TAN LOTIONSSo are spray tans worth the risk? Until recently, spray tans have been seen as the safer alternative to natural tanning or sun beds. However, newinformation released by the FDA (the United States Food and Drug Administration) suggests that this may not be the case. The sprays used bysalons contain a chemical called dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which has been shown in lab tests to cause genetic mutations. So, if you don’t fancy

Pre-workouts have become increasinglypopular over the last year, with the majority ofthose available containing caffeine, creatine, select amino acids and occasionallycarbohydrates. Pre-workouts increase bloodflow and nutrient delivery, improve mentalfocus, enhance muscle pumps, increase energyand delay fatigue, increase strength and musclemass, and promote fat loss. Yes, pre-workoutproducts will not hinder fat loss in any way. Infact, many of the ingredients will help speed upthe metabolic rate and enhance fat utilization. Also, often while dieting to lose fat energylevels can run low. This makes a pre-workoutproduct an excellent choice to keep intensitylevels high while in the gym. Pre-workouts aredesigned to be taken 20-30 minutes before youworkout and most pre-workout supplements

should be taken on an empty stomach. If yourproduct contains caffeine and you happen to besensitive to caffeine, its effects can beminimized by consuming it with a small snack.

Pre-workout supplements can help you in awide range of sports such as bodybuilding, power lifting, football, rugby running andmany more.

Our top 3 pre-workouts we would recommendare Surge Workout fuel, Sci-mx Xplode andDymatize Xpand. (Pictured above)

My outfit tonight was chosen for comfort. I'm a firm believer ifyou’re comfortable in your clothing you’re more relaxed - there'snothing worse than fiddling with you clothes all night, I love theblack leather trousers they are a wardrobe staple! The t- shirt wassomething I bought without trying on first, I just liked it.

How would you describe

‘Bournemouth style’?

Bournemouth style tends to be very dressy, guys are looking verygroomed and preppy but especially with the ladies, I think itcan go too far with the layers of lashes, big big hair, tiny dresses, dark fake tan - I think we give Essex a run for its money, I'd liketo see a little bit more natural .

What is your favourite item in your wardrobe -

something you’ll never part with?

My favourite item of clothing is a Criminal soft black leatherjacket - its so feminine but importantly it's timeless too.

What is your greatest indulgence in your fashion

life?

My greatest fashion indulgence is without doubt shoes.

I stay in shape by running and going to the gym, I still eatwhatever I want as I feel I have a good balance.

My favourite feature is my eyes, the eyes are the window to thesoul as they say.

Go-to beauty brand?

My go to beauty brand is Skinceuticals for skin care products, and I'm a fan of the high street for make up, brands like Benefit,Bourjouis, and good old Rimmel.

Beauty secret?

My best beauty secret is a decent nights sleep and plenty ofwater above any product!

Best beauty advice ever given to me?

The best advice I was given was to let your personality shinethrough, don't overdo yourself in make up, it ends up being theonly thing you can see. Oh and my mum always taught me totake care of my skin by moisturising daily.

the Sand Polo_2012

This summer’s weather has played havoc with outdoor gigs, and theSand Polo was no exception. The organisers coped well with thetorrential downpour, and although it did affect those wanting to view

the polo, it didn’t dampen spirits for the evening parties. Amika, Londonpresented ‘Beach Party the Polo’, bringing a touch of their West End magicto Sandbanks, whilst the live music line up was great and did a good jobwarming everybody up. The Polo does it’s bit for charity ‘Help for Heroes’and this year attendees raised £2500. Well done we say. For info on nextyears event: www.sandpolo.com

RELAXING FOOT MASSAGE // THE EDGE SPA

One minute we’re slipping our soles into UGGboats built for wind, rain, and storm. The next,we’re paddling bare foot along the sandy shoresof Sandbanks beach. With the constant changein the weather, brings a constant change offootwear. Carole McGuinness, Chiropodist andPodiatrist at Silk Nails, Beauty & Health inPoole explains why it is so important to care foryour feet…

Carole advises that people look after their feet bykeeping them clean, washing them daily, drying themthoroughly, ensuring toenails are kept at a reasonablelength, and filing away any hard skin. Using a dailymoisturiser such as E45 can also be beneficial, especially on dry feet to keep the skin around the heelsmoisturised, preventing them from cracking which canbe extremely painful. During the summer months thereare a few things that need to be remembered whilestepping into sandals and flip-flops. Make sure thestraps do not irritate any lumps and bumps on the toes, and consider adding an arch or metatarsal support tosandals that you wear often; this will assist in reducingabnormal foot pronation, along with preventingslipping, arch cramping, foot pain and bunions. SilkNails, Beauty & Health has recently opened theirbeautiful plush new salon, which boasts expertknowledge and a calming atmosphere. An appointmentwith Carole is priced at just £27, where she will giveyou a general consultation and treat your feetaccordingly.

If you want to lose weight, get healthyand/or build muscle, hiring a personaltrainer can be a step in the rightdirection. A good trainer can help youset up a program that meets your goalsand teach you the best way to exercise.Finding and choosing a trainer can bea little confusing and, for some, intimidating. It's not easy asking forhelp, but going in with moreknowledge about how personaltraining works can make it a littleeasier. A personal trainer should becertified through a reputable personaltraining organization, have an updatedcertification in CPR and/or first aid,and have experience, especially inrelation to your goals. For example, ifyou're a bodybuilder, you wantsomeone knowledgeable in that area. Ifyou have a specific medical problem, injury or condition (such as beingpregnant, difficulty getting pregnant, heart problems, diabetes, etc.) makesure your trainer has education inthese areas and will work with yourdoctor.

It has to be said that I am sick to the back teeth ofselfish people; we human beings are consistentlyour own worst enemy. In one sense the worldwide

downturn has done some good in that it has exposedmany vile human practices to which a lot of peopleturned a blind eye when the going was good, but'when the tide goes out you find out who's beenswimming naked' as Warren Buffet once said and sothings are just going to have to get even worse beforethey get any better. We are going to have to be forcedto take a good hard look at ourselves and our greed(read: selfishness).

Stupid bankers bringing an important industry intodisrepute, for which there should be criminalproceedings instantly, and with potential collusion(and without doubt, bad regulation) via politicians, thelaw, Bank of England and general Establishment nearlyeveryone in power is in some way on the hook here.As more of the same comes to light again and again weare all, surely, fed up with venal and selfish, greedy,self-interested people whether it's journalists, doctors,MP's, Union Leaders, tax evaders, thugs or hooligans -the list does not stop. And that is just in the UK.

Europe is on the brink of a man-made economiccatastrophe, albeit not through greed but by way of apolitically noble and initially well-intentioned cause.Yet, unless Germany agrees to greater integration onthe way to a "United States of Europe" the project isfinished and our economy is screwed even further foreven longer. Across the pond the USA is stillstruggling. In Asia, Japan continues to stagnate whilstChina's banking system and property market is not ashealthy as official statistics say it is- whole ghost townshave been built to keep the economy humming yet lotsof these bad loans will have to go pop at some point.Politically, as the recent Arab Spring has shown, peoplein North Africa and the Middle East have had enoughof living under autocracy, and rightly so. What do allof these problems have in common? Yes, humanbeings.

We really do appear to be at a tipping point in terms ofconsciousness. What is the solution to all this selfinduced madness, apart from forcing all people tomeditate on their thoughts and actions? I'm not sure, but full transparency and accountability in every walkof life would be a good start. It is no coincidence thatmost Swedish people and businesses pay their taxeswhen everyone's tax return is open and available foranyone else to see. And so we must throw the light onmany other areas too. Secrecy always breedscorruption. If you can't rely on human beings to do theright thing without encouragement, proving the adagethat you reveal the true character of a man by what heis prepared to do when he knows no-one is watching, then you must use peer group pressure or even shameto force people to behave. Trust underpins all humanrelationships and since the worldwide economic

downturn that trust has been found to be wanting bythe truckload. We must utilise the deep rooted fear of'not being enough', the fear of not living up to others'expectations to coax people into doing the right thingif they are not prepared or able to do it on their own.People are going to have to keep being reminded oftheir morality and their moral duty to one another; wereally need to increase our empathy and reduceselfishness.

And before the rest of us start indulging inSchadenfreude we all need to be reminded to havesome moral humility and to take a good thorough lookin the mirror and then see if our “feral” elite and theirgreedy, selfish ways are still not some reflection ofourselves. How many of us if in the same positionwould be tempted to do the same; fail with the samefoibles? I think I would struggle not to. I used to thinkit a cliché, but feel more and more it a fundamentaltruth that we get the political leaders that we deserve. As oftentimes it seems that many adults behave nobetter than spiteful children in the playground, theirstunted egos fighting for supremacy, demonising the“other” or gloating over relatively minor successes. This is pride and prejudice at its worst (fear at its best)and it is shameful on all of us.

We do live at an amazing time in many ways. Currenttechnology and scientific discoveries, to take just twoexamples, show that human ingenuity knows nobounds. But Homo Sapiens need to grow up. We needto raise our consciousness, develop our benevolenceand increase our empathy as we stand at a hugecrossroads historically speaking and I think it is goingto go one of two ways in how we all now live in thistechnologically-connected, global village - although Iam still optimistic about the future. But ultimately itcomes down to us: me and you. No-one else; no-oneelse is to blame. We need to sort ourselves out firstand take personal responsibility. We need to be brave, stare down our fear, learn to forgive, build trust againand be the change that we want to see. Only then canwe can start to create a brighter, more selfless and lessselfish future for our children.

Nicki GraingerOWNER OF VINTAGE STORE ‘WHAT ALICE FOUND’

Nicki Granger is a fashion journalismgraduate, vintage enthusiast, and for thelast fifteen months the owner of WhatAlice Found, a vintage clothingboutique on Bournemouth’s antique‘Golden Mile’. We popped in to get thelow-down on all things Alice.

Originally from Buckinghamshire, Nickistudied Fashion Journalism at SolentUniversity before starting as an intern at ELLE.The fashon world however, was very 'TheDevil Wears Prada’, and so she decidedinstead to go into content writing and digitalmarketing, before working for localgovernment.

As you can imagine, this was hardly the idealjob for such a creative mind, and so in 2009,Nicki started The Cherry Closet, an onlinevintage boutique which became hugelysuccessful, being featured in such publicationsasGlamour Magazine.

Encouraged by her success, Nicki decided toopen her own shop, and having consideredLondon and Brighton, settled on Boscombe’s

antique mile:

‘I wanted to be there at the start of the area’sgrowth, before vintage went pop. Since I’vebeen here, six or seven other shops haveopened’.

Having worked on the London fashion scene,Nicki wanted people to have ‘more fun withfashion, vintage especially is so expressive’,and this is certainly something that she has achieved.

The vintage look has become increasinglypopular over the last few years, with manyhighstreet shops offering mock-vintage styles.Part of the ethos behind What Alice Foundhowever, is about supporting the independentstores, about ethical buying (all the furniturein the store was sorced from neighbouringshops), and offering people the originalversion of the highstreet. Nicki sources someof her stock in Hollywood, from stores in theeccentric back streets, so you’re guaranteed tofind stunning one-off pieces.

What Alice Found is more than a boutiquethough, Nicki also works as a freelance

vintage stylist, working with theatrecompanies as well as private clients. You’llalso find them at vintage fairs and even musicfestivals. As if this wasn’t enough, theyactively support local graduate artists andillustrators who have a vintage, Alice inWonderland vibe, and examples of their work can be seen in store.

At still only 27, Nicki has been hugelysuccessful in persuing her passion in life, sowhat words of wisdom has she got to pass onto budding vintage entrepreneurs?

‘You have to make yourself stand out, it’sdifficult to be competitive, as such, in vintageas everything item is different, but it’s allabout finding your niche, styling well , andbeing helpful to customers - a lot of people areweary to try vintage, you have to make themfeel comfortable...when I first opened the shopit was a difficult transition but I stuck at it andit has all been worth it, and now have twointerns and a PA to help me!’

What Alice Found is a great Bournemouthsuccess story, so pop down and snap up somefabulous vintage.

Jane has lived in the Dorset area herentire life and has enjoyed a variedcareer. She first became involved inHospitality and PR in the 1980’sworking as Weddings andConference Organiser at highlyrespected local hotels, and it waswithin these roles that Jane begandeveloping the idea of running herown PR and Events Company. JaneJones PR & Events was founded in1999 and since then, the team havebuilt an enviable client base andreputation within their field.

On the reason for putting on Partyin the ParkIt all started 12 years ago when it wasoriginally called Brunch in the Park, andwas part of Taste 200 - Poole’s first foodfestival. The event just grew and grew, and after around 4 years the name gotchanged. The event is all about bringingthe community together, and over the 12years it has been going it has achievedthis, as people from every age group cancongregate on this small park in theknowledge that they will meet up withpeople that they haven’t seen for a while. The whole atmosphere is just so fabulous, and it is all encompassing, combining themusic with food, kid’s entertainment, localarts stalls, and above all, the fact thatpeople are able to have fun.

On why there is a ticket price this yearThis year we are charging £3.00 per personwith under 12’s going free. The price iskept to the lowest possible, but helpstowards all the extra infrastructure wehave to incur; the fencing, portaloos, bins, security, stage and sounds etc. We hopethe local people of Poole will appreciatethat in order to put an event on of thismagnitude, it takes time and a lot ofhidden extras that they probably are notaware of. Without the support of oursponsors, and indeed this small charge toattend the event, it would not be possibleto go ahead, so in turn we hope thatpeople will understand this and come toPITP like they have always done.

On what people can expect from thisyear’s eventAn eclectic mix covering everything fromTarot Card Readings, through to PenaltyShoot Outs for the children. There will beclothes to buy, jewellery to discover, andmuch more, there really is something foreveryone but with a Dorset, local artisantwist. Everything is in keeping with ourlovely county, and any foods on sale willalso be part of supporting Dorset. In termsof music, this year we welcome IslandGlow, The Amy Mayes Band, The SteveWilson Band, Empire Affair, JacksonThree, and DJ Martyn the Hat.

On being a good PRAt JJPR we take pride in our creativity anddynamism. We offer our clients a bespoke, highly personal service, and do not offerour services to other companies in thesame industry once a deal has been sealed. This way we can offer truthful advice, anda package that is no nonsense but is alsocutting edge, always thinking outside ofthe box. Our clients receive advice that isentirely exclusive.

On getting into PRWith my hospitality background in salesand events, it was just the naturalprogression. I was always very good atEnglish, and also had a natural ability tomake many useful contacts, which havealways stood me in good stead over theyears. A pretty good memory has alsobeen an asset, as I never forget a face orname and people really appreciate that.

On the jobs market in BournemouthContrary to all this talk about there notbeing enough jobs, plenty of our clientsare advising us that it is the level ofcandidates suitable for the jobs that is aworry.

On BournemouthBournemouth needs to seriously look at itsregeneration. There is so much potential, but I don’t believe that it is being fulfilledwhich is a real shame.

On events in generalIf you are referring to our local area then Ifeel very strongly about this. I think it isabout time we looked at how similarresorts operate with their events they puton throughout the year - even Swanageleaves us standing. Brighton is absolutelybuzzing and Weymouth too. I think it ishigh time that some fresh ideas wereinjected into the local community, both inPoole and Bournemouth, and if the councilneeds assistance then we would be happyto help in any way we can.

On the economyWell it is really hard for us all. We are allchasing the same jobs; you really have tomake yourself stand out from the crowd.

On Julia’s HouseThis is the charity that PITP is supportingthis year. We chose this charity becauseevery year we support a worthwhile localcause, and this year we decided on Julias’sHouse. Their dedication to workingtowards giving children a better life intheir time of need due to their illness issomething that we all should stop andconsider. They are a fabulous teamdelivering such care and assistance, notjust to the poorly child, but also to thefamily coping with the terminally ill child. It made us realise that if we can give somehelp with the awareness factor plus adonation, then we’ve served our purposeas a community event.

Whether it is the first you’ve ever had towrite, or you find yourself back to squareone having been made redundant from aprevious job, writing a CV can be a dauntingprospect, especially in the current jobmarket. To help point you in the rightdirection, we met up with Frances and Traceyfrom Jobshop UK, local recruitmentspecialists, to get the expert view on whatmakes for a winning CV.

What exactly is a CV?It may seem like an odd question, but first thingsfirst. The abbreviation CV stands for ‘CurriculumVitae’ and means ‘course of life’. It should be a briefbut factual account of your working life so thatpotential employers can gain an insight into whoyou are.

Are looks that important?Presentation is the key, your CV should always betyped, no more than two A4 pages, and printed onhigh-quality paper. It should include these five keysections:

1. Personal details (name, address, contactinformation)2. Personal profile3. Work history4. Education and qualifications5. Any further important personal information.

Personal ProfileThis is the most important section of your CV, but isoften also the most difficult to get right. It is yourfirst chance to make an impression, and should beviewed as an opportunity to sell yourself as acandidate. For this reason, you need to make it standout: try and be creative with your approach, avoiding the usual clichés whilst remaining clearand concise. Try and keep unnecessary personaldetails such as age, race, or political affiliation outunless specifically asked for. While you are trying tohighlight your skills in this section, don’t waffle; oneshort paragraph should be enough.

Work HistoryThis section should be a list of all current andprevious employment working backwards inchronological order. You should clearly show yourjob title, name of the company, dates ofemployment, and include a few short sentences toillustrate key responsibilities and skills developed. While gaps in employment may reflect badly, there

is no room for white lies or hyperbole on your CV,as tempting as it may be to elaborate, always try andrepresent yourself as accurately as possible.

Education and QualificationsList all relevant training and qualifications includingthose gained in previous employment. Courses andgrades should be included in reverse chronologicalorder, however, keep in mind how relevant they areto the position you are applying for. It may be betterto summaries GCSE’s and highlight furthereducation or relevant training gained from aprevious role.

Personal InformationAny further information you feel may be relevant tothe position, for example; whether you hold adriving licence could be useful, being able to do themoonwalk may not.

ReferencesTwo references are usually given. Make sure youhave some already lined up, so that you can supplythem when requested. N.B. your dog is not anacceptable reference, not matter how well you treathim.

Key things to remember:

1. Make sure that you are correctly addressing yourCV and that names and titles are spelt correctly. 2. Ensure that there are no spelling or grammarmistakes. Don’t put your future in the hands of spellcheck, if you’re not confident yourself, get someoneto proof-read it. 3. There is a fine line between selling and over-selling yourself – don’t get carried away withsuperlatives 4. Keep it clear, concise and relevant. Don’t just offera blanket CV, research the company and positionyou are applying to and tailor your CV accordingly.

OK, so the Great British summer mayhave let us down once again, butsalvation is only a short flight away; in acouple of hours you could be soakingup the sun in one of the mostimpressive cities in the world – Rome.

This year marks the two hundredth sinceEngland’s celebrated poet Lord Byronpublished the first two cantos of ChildeHarold’s Pilgrimage, a jaded journey whichled him five years later to Rome, and wouldincite him to cry “Oh Rome! My country! Cityof the soul!” It may no longer be caput mundi, but wandering the cobbled streets of theEternal City, you can immediately feel in it notonly the familiar beauty reminiscent of lostEuropean empires, but much of the ByronicHero himself: moodiness, pride and a sensualaffection (in the Italian people as much as thearchitecture and atmosphere). The city issimultaneously seductive, thrilling, and awe-inspiring, the kind of place whose spell youfall under almost instantly.

Whichever direction you turn, you will bepresented with something spectacular, whether it be the ancient ruins scatteredthroughout the city, the harmonious co-existence of modernity and history, or evenjust the vibrancy of the food. It is anunapologetic assault on the senses, and onethat is more than welcome.

There is an intriguing juxtaposition in Romebetween the fast-passed urban city, and thequiet authority of the monuments andbuildings that act as Lieux de Memoire -constant reminders of times past. While Romeis no doubt a modern European city, thecitizens seem to have transcended the stressesthat we associate with urban living, preferringto take a more relaxed approach to life inwhich time poses no threat, a notion whichyou will find encapsulated in the charm of

Piazza Trisulla, particularly on Fridays, whenit becomes populated by young Romansenjoying aperitivo with mischief in their eyes, and nonchalance in their laughs.

I of course make this statement with theexception of the Roman driving style, as thesystem (if indeed there is one), neither seemsto reflect the Italian attitude in other aspects oflife, nor follow any rules we may recognise asfamiliar - be prepared to hold on tight.

Driving aside however, it is certain that thepace of life is considerably slower, and is aphenomenon that should be whole-heartedlyembraced whilst you are here. Take a strollthrough the winding streets or along by theriver, enjoy an espresso with a view of thePantheon, or spend your day people watchingat Piazza di Spagna, an unavoidable allure forthe traveller in Rome, full in the summermonths of a medley of buoyant visitors fromall over the world, and tranquil garden to thelocals the rest of the year. The Piazza alsoboasts the Keats-Shelley house, final home ofRomantic poet John Keats, containing within itpaintings, sculptures, manuscripts, and relicsof some of the finest literary names born out ofEngland during the period.

If you have an interest in literature, I’d alsorecommend going to see The Deposition, arecently rediscovered artistic result of FrancoAngeli’s encounter with a drunken JackKerouac, hero of the Beat Generation. The

painting, a spiritual adaptation of Italianmaster-painter Caravaggio’s Deposition, wassold in 1968 (two years after its creation) to theactor Volonte, and subsequently disappeared.Forty-five years after it was painted however,it has been rediscovered, and is beingexhibited at Museo dei Fori Imperiali. Kerouacis back in the public eye this year with theimminent release of a film adaptation of OnThe Road, and so this is the perfectopportunity to take in one of his lesser-knownartistic achievements.

Whatever you choose to fill your days with, take them slowly, and allow yourself to absorbthe culture of Rome. Unfortunately however, this is not a luxury available to everyone. Ifyou are only visiting for a short break, be sureto make the most of it, and (although you willlook like a tourist) try and see as many of thelandmarks as you can; The Vatican City, ThePantheon, Trevi Fountain, The Colosseum, thelist goes on, but they are all equally impressiveand culturally significant.

A surprising number of sights do not chargean entrance fee, including St. Peter’s Basilica(although the museums and Sistine Chapel docharge), and the Pantheon, so be aware of thisas there are many tour guides touting tickets atimposed or inflated prices - the queues arenever as long as they claim. A similar word ofwarning goes for bars and restaurants. Priceswill always be high around big landmarks, butthe food is just as good, if not better, in eaterieshidden away in the quieter streets. Rememberthat you are on holiday, Italians expect you totake time over your meal – don’t confuse thiswith bad service.

No matter how long you have to spend here,or how far your budget will stretch, thisstunning city has something to offer; it isdefinitely worth a visit even if city breaksaren’t your usual style, personally, I can’t waitto go back.

How long have you been in theindustry?Almost three yearsWhat is your signature drink?‘The 2012 Daiquiri. Made with AppletonEstate 12yr Rum and Licor 43, its my takeon a common combination of ingredientsincluding lime and honey for a naturaland balanced drink’What do you love most aboutAruba?‘We have a Parrot, Parakeet? It’s a bird, wehave a bird!’

Tasting notes:This twist on the popular classic combinesthe expected Bacardi Superior white rum, fresh lime, mint, and sugar, but with theaddition of dried chilli, and Aruba’shomemade chilli oil. Served long andtopped with soda, it is still as refreshing asyou’d expect a mojito to be, but with adevilish kick.

Tell us about your outfit tonight? My outfit tonight was chosen for comfort. I'm a firm believer ifyou’re comfortable in your clothing you’re more relaxed - there'snothing worse than fiddling with you clothes all night, I love theblack leather trousers they are a wardrobe staple! The t- shirt wassomething I bought without trying on first, I just liked it.

How would you describe‘Bournemouth style’? Bournemouth style tends to be very dressy, guys are looking verygroomed and preppy but especially with the ladies, I think itcan go too far with the layers of lashes, big big hair, tiny dresses, dark fake tan - I think we give Essex a run for its money, I'd liketo see a little bit more natural .

What is your favourite item in your wardrobe -something you’ll never part with?My favourite item of clothing is a Criminal soft black leatherjacket - its so feminine but importantly it's timeless too.

What is your greatest indulgence in your fashionlife? My greatest fashion indulgence is without doubt shoes.

I stay in shape by?I stay in shape by running and going to the gym, I still eatwhatever I want as I feel I have a good balance.

Favourite feature? My favourite feature is my eyes, the eyes are the window to thesoul as they say.

Go-to beauty brand? My go to beauty brand is Skinceuticals for skin care products, and I'm a fan of the high street for make up, brands like Benefit,Bourjouis, and good old Rimmel.

Beauty secret? My best beauty secret is a decent nights sleep and plenty ofwater above any product!

Best beauty advice ever given to me?The best advice I was given was to let your personality shinethrough, don't overdo yourself in make up, it ends up being theonly thing you can see. Oh and my mum always taught me totake care of my skin by moisturising daily.

Question 1:What is yourfavourite drink?
