1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 General notes

In this manual, the designation Stemi DV4 always stands for all variants and combination numbers of the Stemi DV4 microscope. The Stemi DV4 SPOT is worth to be mentioned particularly.

The Stemi DV4 microscope was designed, produced and tested in compliance with DIN EN 61010-1 (IEC 61010-1) and IEC 61010-2-101 "Safety requirements for electrical measuring, control and laboratory instruments".

The instrument meets the requirements of the EC Directive 98/79/EC Annex 1 for IvD products and is marked with the label.

This operating manual contains information and warnings that must be followed by owner/operator personnel.

The instruments have to be disposed of in compliance with the WEEE Directive 2002/96/EC.

The following warning and information symbols are used in this manual:

1.2 Notes regarding operational safety

The following safety notes have to be observed in particular:

The stereomicroscopes Stemi DV4 including their original accessories must not be used for applications other than those described in this operating manual. The manufacturer cannot assume any liability for any other applications, possibly also involving individual modules or single parts. Modifications and repairs to this stereomicroscope and to instruments operated in combination with it may only be carried out by our service technicians or other authorized persons. The manufacturer shall not be liable for any damage caused by unauthorized intervention in the device. All claims for warranty and warranty services will be null and void in any such case.

Opening of the device is only allowed to accordingly instructed specialists or to the service staff.

The stereomicroscope is a precision instrument, which may suffer a significant reduction in operational functions or even physical destruction in case of improper intervention.

The microscope is not equipped with special devices for the protection from substances that are corrosive, potentially infectious, toxic, radioactive, or other substances that might be hazardous to health. Make sure to observe all legal regulations, particularly the relevant national accident prevention regulations when handling such substances.

Do not operate the devices included in the delivery in potentially explosive areas, in the presence of volatile anesthetics or combustible solvents, such as alcohol, benzene or similar chemicals.

Dirt and dust may impair the performance of the device. It must therefore be protected from such influences to the greatest possible extent and covered with the dust cover when not in use. Always check whether the device has been disconnected from the supply before you cover it (blue power-on light is off).

The microscope is equipped with a plug-in power unit allowing line voltages to be used in the range between 100 and 240 V ± 10%, 50/60 Hz, without any need for changing the voltage setting on the instrument. The plug-in power unit meets the requirements of protection class II (with protective insulation). If its casing is damaged, put the plug-in power unit out of operation. The microscope may be operated only with the supplied plug-in power unit.

The plug-in power unit must not get in contact with moisture.

The LED illumination module is an LED class 1 unit.

If the Stemi DV4 shall be operated with an external fiber-optic cold-light source, please observe the corresponding operating manual and the safety notes included before commissioning the light source.

Rotating with force the two zoom or focusing knobs in opposite directions will damage the stereomicroscope.

Put the instrument into its original packaging or into the Stemi Box C for transportation over longer distances.

1.3 Intended use

The stereomicroscopes Stemi DV4 are microscopes for enlarged, spatial observation of small objects. They have been designed for applications in biomedical laboratories as well as for industrial quality assurance and manufacturing purposes. In addition to that, they are very useful in schools, universities and scientific institutions.

In biology and medicine, the Stemi DV4 is intended for examining blood and/or tissue samples of the human body. Applications in diagnostic medicine are expressly excluded, with the exception of medical research.

1.4 Notes on warranty

The product manufacturer warrants the instrument to be free from faults in material and workmanship at the moment of passing into the user’s ownership. Defects must be notified immediately on identification and maximum efforts must be undertaken in order to keep the damage as small as possible. On receiving notice of a fault, the product manufacturer will be under obligation to remove the fault, at his own option, either by providing adequate repair services or by delivering a faultless product for replacement. No warranty will be accepted in cases of natural wear (notably, wear and tear parts) or improper product handling.

The product manufacturer will refuse any liability in the event of damage resulting from faulty operation, negligence or unauthorized intervention into the product, notably, from the replacement of product parts or the usage of accessory parts from other manufacturers. Any such case will void the user’s claim for warranty.

Except for action which is explicitly described in this operating manual, you are prohibited from performing any kind of maintenance or repair work on the microscope. Only Zeiss Customer Service personnel or specifically authorized representatives are allowed to handle repair work. On identifying a situation of malfunction, please get in touch with the Carl Zeiss microscopy service in Germany or your local Zeiss agency.

1.5 Disposal

Defective microscopes should not be disposed of with household waste; dispose of them in compliance with the provisions of the law. Specimens have also to be disposed of properly according to the applicable legal provisions and the internal work instructions.

1.6 Important properties of the Stemi DV4 stereomicroscopes

The Stemi DV4 stereomicroscopes are Greenough-type microscopes for enlarged, spatial observation of small objects. They have been designed for training purposes in schools, universities and scientific institutions, as well as for routine work in biology, medicine and industry. In addition to that, they are used for leisure and hobby activities.

The name DV4 stands for Double Lens Vario with the zoom factor 4. The zoom range of 4:1 corresponds to the overall magnification range of 8x to 32x (basic version).

The continuously variable magnification changer with mechanically corrected zoom optics guarantees high-contrast, sharp images over the entire zoom range. After the basic setting of the stereomicroscope, the image remains exactly in focus when changing the zoom.

Their compact design makes the Stemi DV4 stereomicroscopes ready for immediate use and very easy to operate. Depending on the requirements, these microscopes can be converted and upgraded flexibly within the scope of the modular Zeiss stereomicroscope system.

Interchangeable optical components permit the magnification range to be varied as required. Magnifications up to 96x and a clearly increased resolution can thus be reached.

A modern LED illumination system for reflected and transmitted light is integrated in the C LED stand. Remarkable features are its excellent light output with low operating power consumption and its very long lifetime. Thanks to white light illumination in daylight quality, the objects are visualized in high contrast and natural colors. Furthermore, the "cold" LED light without any infrared portions protects the specimen observed.

(Repeated) depression of a button is sufficient for the selection of the illumination mode:

− brightfield illumination in reflected light,

− brightfield illumination in transmitted light,

− brightfield illumination in mixed light,

Optional accessories allow the user to apply the following additional illuminating and contrast techniques:

− darkfield illumination in transmitted light,

− polarization contrast in reflected light and transmitted light.

The illumination intensity can be continuously set for each illumination mode and, thus, adapted to the most different specimens.

Several eyepiece adapters are available for image documentation using:

− Compact digital cameras with filter thread, e.g. Canon PowerShot

− 35mm SLR cameras and digital DSLR cameras

− Digital microscope cameras and video cameras with C-mount connector

The adaptation of further digital cameras (i.e. not tested by Zeiss) with M37 or M52 objective / filter thread must be tested - as described in chapter 3.3.5!

2 DESCRIPTION

2.1 Stemi DV4 product family

The product family of Stemi DV4 stereomicroscopes includes the following microscope bodies: − Stemi DV4 and

− Stemi DV4 SPOT.

Both microscopes have a continuous magnification setting knob from 8x for an overall view to 32x for object details (basic equipment is without interchangeable optical components).

Front lens systems allow flexible customization of magnification range, working distance and resolution of the devices.

The eyepieces of Stemi DV4 and Stemi DV4 SPOT are adjustable so that individual ametropia can be compensated. After the basic setting of the stereomicroscope, (see chapters 3.1.4 and 3.2.2) the image remains exactly in focus throughout the zoom range.

Compared with the standard eyepieces 10x/20, the optionally usable eyepieces 15x/13 offer an additional 1.5-fold magnification with the same stereo angle.

The Stemi DV4 is intended for being used mainly in combination with the C LED stand and its accessories (compact variant).

But, of course, it can be used as well as a component part of the modular system of Zeiss stereomicroscopes: The ∅ 76 mm interface of the Stemi DV4 microscope body allows its combination with any Zeiss stereo stand.

Vice versa, the C LED compact stand may be used also with other Zeiss stereomicroscopes, for example with the Stemi 2000.

The Stemi DV4 SPOT has been designed for use within the modular system of the Zeiss stereomicroscopes. It has an integrated fiber-optic SPOT illuminator for near-axis reflected light illumination, with the light falling almost vertically on the object. The light guide incorporated in the microscope has been optimized for connection to the cold-light sources KL200, KL200 LED, and CL1500 ECO.

If front lens systems are used, the illuminated field of the SPOT illuminator will be adapted automatically to the maximum object field of the DV4 SPOT equipped with the optical components given (i.e. to the field size available with minimum zoom).

Due to the integrated reflected-light illuminator, the Stemi DV4 SPOT is excellently suited to be mounted to boom and swing arm stands.

3.1 Basic instrument as compact variant with C LED stand

3.1.1 Start-up

• Open the packaging on the top and lift the Stemi DV4 together with the expanded plastic inset out of the packaging.

• Remove the Stemi DV4 with C LED stand from the expanded plastic inset and place it with the base plate of the stand on a plane, solid support.

• Check whether all components listed in the delivery note are included in the package.

• Properly dispose of the packaging or keep it for later reuse.

• Remove the small cardboard box containing the power supply unit and unpack it.

• Insert the primary adapter (corresponding to the local line voltage) into the appropriate opening of the plug-in power unit until stop.

Voltage change on the plug-in power unit is not required. It is automatically matched to the available line voltage.

• Insert the connector of the plug-in power unit into the 12 V socket in the left rear part of the stand base plate.

• Connect the plug-in power unit to a mains socket outlet. The blue power pilot lamp (LED) integrated in the illumination control panel in the right rear part of the stand base plate lights up. The instrument is in standby mode.

The packaging cover (polyester bag) can be used as dust cover.

3.1.3 Illumination

The three membrane buttons of the illumination control panel permit both selection of the illumination mode (reflected, transmitted and mixed light) and the control of the illumination intensity for the selected illumination mode.

The pressure points of the membrane buttons feature three nubs which can be easily made out by touching during microscopy.

3.1.3.1 Selection of the illumination mode

The illumination mode is selected via button M on the illumination control panel. This button has been designed as a series switch with 4 switching statuses. Each switching procedure between these statuses is performed via a single press of button M. The following sequence of switching statuses is always observed:

− basic status after start-up illumination off (standby), blue LED lights up

− pressing button M reflected light on (transmitted light off)

− pressing button M again transmitted light on (reflected light off)

− pressing button M again mixed light on (reflected and transmitted light on)

− pressing button M again basic status (standby)

In each case, switching is performed not before button M has been released!

3.1.3.2 Variation of the illumination intensity

The intensity is set continuously between the minimum and maximum values via the buttons + and -.

− To increase the illumination intensity: press button + (several times) or keep it pressed

− To reduce the illumination intensity: press button - (several times) or keep it pressed

In mixed light, the intensities can be set separately for reflected and transmitted light.

− Reflected light: press button + / - (several times) or keep it pressed

− Transmitted light: press buttons M and + / - (several times) or keep them pressed

3.1.4 Basic setting of the stereomicro-scope

The stereomicroscope has been placed on a plane, stable support, connected to the mains and is in standby mode.

• Place object (3-4/6) centrally on the insert plate.

• Switch on reflected-light illumination by a single press of button M (3-4/4) and direct the light beam towards the object using the adjusting lever (3-4/5).

• Screw eyepieces into the eyepiece tubes until stop.

• Then unscrew both eyepieces again by approximately one revolution to allow for compensation of any ametropia.

• Set the individual interpupillary distance of the eyepieces (3-4/1) by pressing the eyepiece tubes together or pulling them apart so that one common trim-free, circular image is visible on viewing through the eyepieces with both eyes.

• To search the object, set the zoom knob (3-4/2) to the lowest magnification first and use the focusing knob (3-4/3) for focusing.

• Set maximum magnification and precisely focus the image detail.

• In case of any individual visual defects set minimum magnification again on the Stemi DV4 and compensate any blurs separately for each eye rotating the focusing eyepieces (3-4/1). (Attention: Do not use the focusing knob for this action!).

If the microscope has been focused in this way, the image sharpness will be retained over the entire zoom range.

• Put the eyecups on the eyepieces so that the lens hood shows outward. Spectacle wearers have to turn the eyecups back. The turned back eyecups serve as a protecting lay-on surface for the spectacle frame.

• Observe the object through the eyepieces and adjust the reflected-light LED illuminator optimally towards the object by using the adjusting lever (3-4/5).

The values on the zoom knob are identical to the set overall magnification of the basic instrument (without changeable optical components) with the eyepieces 10x/20. If the changeable optical components are used, the correct overall magnification results by multiplying the values on the zoom knob by the magnification factor of the front lens system.

Turning with force the two zoom or focusing knobs in opposite directions will damage the stereomicroscope.

The lower end position of the focusing drive is limited by the stand base. In the range of the lower end position, the focusing drive should therefore only be adjusted slowly in order to avoid damage to the stand.

The upper end position of the focusing drive is determined by the end of the toothed rack. If the upper end position is reached, the drive will no longer lock in position. It is not possible to turn the Stemi mount out of the stand: a cracking noise can be heard if turning is continued. Turning back will automatically lock the drive in position again.

If the eyepiece is turned out too far (approx. 4 rotations), it will come off the eyepiece tube and can then be removed.

• According to the object to be examined, the desired illumination mode (reflected, transmitted or mixed light) can easily be set by using the buttons of the illumination control panel and the illumination intensity matched to the requirements.

3.1.5 Adjusting the smoothness of the focusing drive

• Hold left focusing knob in position and use ball-headed screwdriver (SW 3) to loosen its hexagon socket screw by at least two rotations.

The ball-headed screwdriver is con-tained in the stand base.

• Hold right focusing knob in position and turn left knob to the right (tight movement) or to the left (smooth movement).

• Check the adjusted smoothness by focusing with the right focusing knob.

• When the required smoothness is achieved, hold left focusing knob in position and tighten (powerfully) its hexagon socket screw.

• Finally, check smoothness again and repeat the procedure, if required.

Smoothness of the focusing drive cannot be adjusted by turning the two focusing knobs in opposite directions. Turning with force the knobs in opposite directions will damage the stereomicroscope.

In the case of the module "C LED stand with specimen magazine 16" offered for sale, the smoothness of the focusing drive is preadjusted and fixed in the factory and cannot be varied by the user. Chapter 3.1.5 of this manual does not apply to this model.

3.2 Stemi DV4 SPOT mounted to the swing arm stand U

3.2.1 Start-up

• Mount stand U, fix the Stemi DV4 Spot to the Stemi mount and move the stand to an optimal position to make the workplace ergonomically correct according to the operating instructions for the U stand.

• Connect the SPOT illumination module of the Stemi DV4 Spot to a fiber-optic cold-light source and set the cold-light source into operation according to the corresponding operating instructions.

3.2.2 Basic setting of the stereomicroscope

The Stemi DV4 SPOT (3-6/6) and the cold-light source (3-6/1) have been mounted to the U stand (3-6/2). The Spot illumination module has been connected correctly and the cold-light source has been connected to the mains. The swing arm stand has been oriented accordingly to ensure an ergonomic working position.

• Place the object into the illuminated object field (3-6/4).

• Screw eyepieces (3-6/7) of the Stemi DV4 SPOT into the eyepiece tubes until stop.

• Then unscrew both eyepieces (3-6/7) again by approximately one revolution to allow for compensation of any ametropia.

• Set the individual interpupillary distance of the eyepieces (3-6/7) by pressing the eyepiece tubes together or pulling them apart so that one common trim-free, circular image is visible on viewing through the eyepieces with both eyes.

• Set maximum magnification and precisely focus the image detail by turning the Vario front lens system 0.3x…0.5x (3-6/5). If the focusing Stemi mount is used, the Vario front lens system is not required as focusing may be carried out by using the focusing wheel.

• In case of any individual visual defects set minimum magnification again on the Stemi DV4 SPOT and compensate any blurs separately for each eye rotating the focusing eyepieces (3-6/7). (Attention: Do not use the Vario front lens system or the focusing knob for this action!)

If the microscope has been focused this way, the image sharpness will be retained over the entire zoom range.

• Put the eyecups on the eyepieces so that the lens hood shows outward. Spectacle wearers have to turn the eyecups back. The turned back eyecups serve as a protecting lay-on surface for the spectacle frame.

If the changeable optical components are used, the correct overall magnification results by multiplying the values on the zoom knob of the Stemi DV4 SPOT by the magnification factor of the front lens system. This way of calculating the magnification does not apply if the Vario front lens system is used, because its magnification factor varies between 0.3x…0.5x according to the adjusted working distance.

If the eyepiece is turned out far enough (approx. 4 rotations), it will come off the eyepiece tube and can then be removed.

3.3 Accessories for the compact variant

3.3.1 Transmitted-light DF accessory

Microscopy in transmitted-light darkfield requires the opal glass plate in the stand base to be exchanged for the transmitted-light DF accessory for the C LED stand (DL-DF/C accessory).

• Tilt glass plate by pressing on its rear edge (North) and remove it from the stand base.

• Press the DL-DF/C accessory against the spring in the stand base at the front (South) and lower it at the back until it engages. Make sure that the DL-DF/C accessory is seated horizontally. Caution: The glass plate in the DL-DF/C accessory has only been loosely inserted.

• Switch on the transmitted light and set maximum intensity.

Proceed as follows to remove the transmitted-light DF accessory:

• Hold the DL-DF/C accessory at the rear (North) below the step, press it out of the stand base in upward direction and remove it in forward direction.

To avoid background brightening, the removable glass plate of the DL-DF/C accessory must be carefully cleaned. When the 0.63x front lens system is used, slight image trimming can occur in the magnification range < 10x caused by the diaphragm of the DL-DF/C accessory.

3.3.2 Accessories for Polarization

The accessories for polarization allow you to use the Stemi DV4 also for reflected-light, transmitted-light, and mixed-light polarization techniques. The polarization accessories include:

− Polarizer RL (Fig. 3-9/4),

− Polarizer TL (Fig. 3-9/2),

− Analyzer RL/TL (Fig. 3-9/3) and

− Adapter ring M49/M50 (Fig. 3-9/1).

3.3.2.1 Polarization Contrast in Reflected Light

The reflected-light polarizer C LED can be placed upon the LED spot illuminator for reflected light of the C LED stand. It provides linear polarization of the reflected light of the C LED stand.

Combined with the analyzer for Stemi DV4, it is a highly efficient means to suppress specular reflections from reflected-light objects. This method takes advantage of the fact that the polarization of light is preserved in specular reflections, while diffusely scattered light is depolarized.

When the polarizer and analyzer are crossed to each other, specularly reflected light will be totally absorbed by the analyzer, while diffusely scattered light will pass proportionally and can be observed through the eyepieces.

Specular reflections are often undesirable for the observation of reflected-light objects because they can produce a glare that is much brighter than the object. Such reflections occur on metallic objects, e.g. soldering joints, but also on glass or liquid surfaces.

Installation / use of polarization contrast in reflected light:

• Push the reflected-light polarizer (Fig. 3-9/4) onto the LED spot illuminator (Fig. 3-10/2).

• Screw the analyzer (Fig. 3-9/3) by means of the adapter ring M49/M50 (Fig. 3-9/1) to the front of the Stemi DV4 (Fig. 3-10/1).

The adapter ring will not be required if a front lens system is used.

• Switch on the reflected light source of the C LED stand. Increase illumination intensity if necessary.

• Focus the reflected-light object.

• Rotate the reflected-light polarizer or the analyzer, while observing the object through the eyepieces, until no specular reflections can be seen any more. Polarizer and analyzer are now in crossed position.

• If the specular reflections shall remain visible, though attenuated, rotate the analyzer off its crossed position until obtaining the wanted brightness of the reflection.

3.3.2.2 Polarization Contrast in Transmitted Light

The transmitted-light polarizer C LED can be inserted into the C LED stand in lieu of the opal glass plate. It provides linear polarization of the transmitted light of the C LED stand.

Combined with the analyzer M49/M50 for Stemi DV4 it allows transmitted-light objects to be observed in polarization contrast. For this purpose, the first step is to orientate the transmitted-light polarizer and the analyzer vertically to each other (crossed position). In this position, the analyzer will totally absorb the polarized transmitted light. Without an object, the image will appear as a totally black area in the eyepiece.

Many transmitted-light objects rotate the vibration direction of the polarized light when being transilluminated. This "rotated" polarized light passes partially through the analyzer, and the object will become visible in polarization contrast.

Suitable specimens are, for example, glass with frozen-in strains and polymers or crystals, the refractive index of which depends on the polarizing direction of the incident light (birefringent materials).

Installation / use of polarization contrast in transmitted light:

• Remove the opal glass plate from the stand (see Fig. 3-7 on page 27) and insert the transmitted-light polarizer (Fig. 3-11/2).

• Screw the analyzer (Fig. 3-9/3) by means of the adapter ring M49/M50 (Fig. 3-9/1) to the front of the Stemi DV4 (Fig. 3-11/1).

The adapter ring will not be required if a front lens system is used.

• Switch on the transmitted-light source of the C LED stand. Increase illumination intensity if necessary.

• Rotate the analyzer, while looking through the eyepiece, until the image appears brightly.

• Focus any transmitted-light object and remove it again.

• Rotate the analyzer until the image viewed through the eyepiece is dark (black). The transmitted-light polarizer and analyzer are now in crossed position. Now, birefringent transmitted-light objects can be observed in polarization contrast.

• Rotate the analyzer 90° to observe the object in transmitted-light brightfield.

3.3.2.3 Polarization Contrast in Mixed Light

To observe objects in mixed light, it may be useful to combine reflected-light and transmitted-light polarization.

For this purpose, the Stemi DV4 / C LED stand allows the combination of reflected-light polarizer C LED, transmitted-light polarizer C LED, and analyzer M49/M50.

Examples:

− Observation of transparent minerals in transmitted-light polarization contrast. Opaque inclusions or parts of the surface are made visible by additional reflected light. Reflected light glare is suppressed by polarization of the reflected light.

− Observation of an opaque insect in reflected light. Polarization of the reflected light reduces specular reflections, e.g. from the wings. The transmitted-light polarizer in crossed position causes the background to be contrasty and deep black. For this case, it is not necessary to switch on the transmitted-light illuminator.

Installation / use of polarization contrast in mixed light:

• Install and prepare transmitted-light polarization contrast as described in subsection 3.3.2.2.

• Switch on the mixed-light mode at the C LED stand and increase illumination intensity if necessary.

• Push the reflected-light polarizer C LED slightly onto the LED spot illuminator.

• Rotate the reflected-light polarizer, while observing the object through the eyepieces, until the specular reflections disappear. Both polarizers are now in crossed position to the analyzer.

• Push the reflected-light polarizer C LED completely onto the LED spot illuminator.

• Rotate the analyzer 90° to observe the object in transmitted-light brightfield. Orientate the reflected-light polarizer accordingly for further suppression of reflected light glare.

3.3.2.4 Reflected Light with black Background by crossed Polarizers

If the reflected-light and transmitted-light polarizers of the C LED stand are in crossed position, without having attached an analyzer to the front of the Stemi DV4, objects can be observed in reflected-light brightfield with a deep-black background. In this case, the reflected light glare is not suppressed.

Installation / use:

• Insert the transmitted-light polarizer into the C LED stand (see subsection 3.3.2.2).

• Push the reflected-light polarizer C LED onto the LED spot illuminator (see subsection 3.3.2.1).

The analyzer is not used in this case!

• Switch on the reflected-light source of the C LED stand. Increase illumination intensity if necessary.

• Rotate the reflected-light polarizer, while looking through the eyepieces, until the background appears black. Both polarizers are now in crossed position to each other. Reflected-light objects appear brilliant in their natural colors in front of a deep-black background.

3.3.3 Eyepiece 15x/13 Br. foc.

The Stemi DV4 or the Stemi DV4 Spot can be equipped additionally with the eyepiece 15x/13. It can be focused and is also suited for spectacle wearers.

Referred to the standard eyepiece 10x/20, the object visible through the 15x eyepiece appears magnified by the factor 1.5. This allows objects to be observed through a Stemi DV4 at magnifications up to 48x without using a front lens system (at a convenient working distance of 92 mm). The eyepiece change does not affect the depth of focus and the resolution of the Stemi DV4.

By using front lens systems, the total magnification and the resolution can be increased further up to the maximum magnification of 96x and a resolution of 320 Lp/mm.

3.3.4 Direct measurement using the eyepiece-micrometer equipment 8x/32x/18 on the Stemi DV4

Integration of the eyepiece-micrometer equipment 8x/32x/18 into the eyepiece tubes of the Stemi DV4 permits measurements in the magnification steps 8x (overview) and 32x (object detail).

The graduation of the reticle scale indicates the dimensions of the objects in the magnification steps 8x and 32x; the values can be read off directly.

The eyepiece-micrometer equipment can be used only with the standard eyepieces 10x/20.

Integration of the eyepiece-micrometer equipment requires the components to be meticulously clean. Should the reticle be dirty, it must be carefully cleaned first.

• Unscrew both eyepieces (3-12/1) from the eyepiece tubes (3-12/4).

• Insert reticle (3-12/3) and field diaphragm (3-12/2) into the eyepiece tubes. Align reticle scale in North-South direction.

• Screw on eyepieces (3-12/1) again.

• Carry out basic settings according to chapter 3.1.4 and 3.2.2, respectively.

• Set magnification step 8x or 32x (end positions of the zoom knob).

• Put object detail to be measured against the relevant measuring scale.

• Read measured value off the scale.

If interchangeable optical components are used, the zoom knob has also to be turned to one of its end positions ("8" or "32" printing) and an object detail has to be put against the relevant scale. In order to obtain the correct object size, the value read off the scale has still to be divided by the magnification factor of the front lens system.

In order to measure in magnifications other than those resulting from the end positions of the zoom knob, the reticle scale of the eyepiece-micrometer equipment has to be calibrated for the set magnification factor by means of an appropriate stage micrometer or a ruler.

3.3.5 Documentation of microscopic images

The various eyepiece adapters are inserted into an eyepiece tube instead of the eyepiece! For settings use the eyepiece not covered by the camera.

3.3.5.1 SRL cameras and digital SRL cameras

• Use the eyepiece adapter 2.5x T2 for SLR cameras.

• Unscrew eyepiece (3-14/5) from one of the eyepiece tubes.

• Attach suitable T2 adapter (3-14/2) to the SRL camera (3-14/1).

• Screw eyepiece adapter 2.5x T2 (3-14/3) into the T2 adapter.

• Insert complete unit consisting of SRL camera, T2 adapter and eyepiece adapter into the eyepiece tube until stop and slightly tighten the retainer ring (3-14/4) of the eyepiece adapter.

• Align the camera and tighten the retainer ring.

• Connect the remote release to the SRL camera (if required).

3.3.5.2 Camcorder, e.g. SONY Handycam, and compact digital cameras with filter thread, e.g. Canon PowerShot

• Use the eyepiece adapter "M37/M52x0.75 – DV4" for digital compact and video cameras.

• Some camera models require a camera-specific filter adapter (3-15/3) with M37 or M52 thread for fastening it to the camera (camera accessory).

• Use the angled screwdriver delivered to loosen the set screw (3-15/6) on the eyepiece adapter.

• Pull lens mount (3-15/7) out of the sliding mount (3-15/5).

• Unscrew eyepiece (3-15/8) from one of the eyepiece tubes.

• Screw lens mount (3-15/7, optical surface pointing to the observer) onto the thread of the eyepiece tube and tighten it until stop. Caution! Do not touch the optics!

• Screw sliding mount with thread (3-15/5) until stop into the objective/filter thread of the camera (3-15/1, 2) or the filter adapter (3-15/3). If necessary, unscrew beforehand the adapter ring M37 – M52 (3-15/4).

• Attach sliding mount with camera (3-15/1, 2) to the lens mount (3-15/7) orient it and use angled screwdriver to tighten the set screw (3-15/6).

• Connect supply and signal cables, if required. If the camera will be used for a long period of time, it is recommended to use the line adapter delivered with the camera!

• Switch on the camera.

• Switch camera from preset autofocus to manual focusing and focus manually on "∞" (see operating instructions of the camera).

It may happen that the "∞" setting gets slightly out of position when manipulating the adapter or operating the camera zoom. Therefore always check the "∞" setting before taking exposures!

• Move zoom camera lens into the center zoom position (display W T).

• Vary the distance "camera objective - lens mount" step by step to obtain an untrimmed image that is illuminated as homogeneously as possible. For this purpose, shift the sliding mount with the camera on the lens mount (screwed to the eyepiece tube) accordingly.

• Zoom for every distance set the camera objective from wide-angle position (W) through to tele position (T) and check the image on the LCD display or monitor.

• Carry out this test until the image is format-filling, untrimmed and unvignetted.

• The camera is ready for operation.

If no format-filling, untrimmed and unvignetted image can be obtained, optimal adaptation of the corresponding camera is not possible!

3.3.5.3 Cameras with C-mount connector

• Use the video eyepiece adapter C 0.8x for microscope cameras and video cameras with C-mount connector.

• Unscrew eyepiece (3-16/4) from one of the eyepiece tubes.

• Screw eyepiece adapter C 0.8x (3-16/2) into the camera (3-16/1).

• Insert complete unit into the eyepiece tube until stop and slightly tighten the retainer ring (3-16/3) of the eyepiece adapter.

• Align the camera and tighten the retainer ring.

3.3.6 C LED Stand with Specimen Magazine 16

The specimen magazine 16 (Fig. 3-17) facilitates the observation of up to 16 specimens, allowing quick change between the specimens. It has been developed in particular for presenting specimens in museums and show rooms as well as at trade fairs and exhibitions.

3.3.7 Tilting Device for C LED Stand

The tilting device is an add-on accessory for the C stand and the C LED stand.

It is used to incline the C LED stand 15° to 25° frontward, providing thus a reduced viewing angle of 45° to 35° for better comfort of the user of the Stemi DV4 stereomicroscope (see Fig. 3-18).

Instructions for use:

− The tilting device allows the user to keep his/her head in fatigue-free position and to sit ergonomically correctly in the case of high viewing heights of the Stemi DV4 mounted to the C stand, e.g. when working at high work tables (dental laboratory) or when using front lenses 0.63x, or if tall specimens are observed.

− The use of the tilting device also brings about an inclined position of the object support of the C LED stand. Due to this fact, the tilting device is recommendable if the object is held by hand, e.g. in dental laboratories or the watch and clock making industry.

4 MAINTENANCE AND SERVICE

4.1 Maintenance

Maintenance of the instruments is limited to the following operations:

• Disconnect the plug-in power unit of the Stemi DV4 from the line after use. Use a suitable cover (dust cover) to protect the instrument from dust and humidity.

• Never expose the instruments for a longer time to inadmissible climatic conditions (high humidity and temperature).

The best way to remove stubborn dirt on glass surfaces, e.g. finger prints or traces of grease, is the use of a piece of cotton wrapped around a wooden stick and a small amount of distilled water or a non-aggressive solution:

• Distilled water: Clean glass surface by moving a slightly moistened wad of cotton in circles from the middle to the edge.

• Optics cleaning solution, consisting of 15 % isopropanol and 85 % surgical spirit (gasoline): Clean glass surface by moving a slightly moistened wad of cotton in circles from the middle to the edge.

• Remove dust from optical surfaces using a natural hair brush or an air blower.

• Plastic components must be cleaned with commercially available cleaning agents (no solvents!). Stubborn dirt can be carefully treated with petroleum ether or spirit.

4.3 Service

Any interventions on mechanical, optical or electronic components inside the Stemi DV4 are allowed exclusively to Carl Zeiss service staff or specially authorized personnel.

To ensure the optimum setting and trouble-free function of your microscope even for a longer period of time, we would recommend you to conclude a service/maintenance contract with Carl Zeiss.

In the case of subsequent orders or when service is required, please get in touch with your local Zeiss agency.
