What are they for? • They are all around the country and most of the 2/5

of Netherlands is polderized. • If they weren’t drained, all they country would be

flooded.• The main activity is agrarian one.• There are more than a million hectares which are

polderized.• They’re managed by pumps or drainage canals.

Types of polders I

• Pieces of sea which have been occupied by land.

• Flood plains separated from the sea by a dike.

• Reservoirs which are drained.

• Low lying polders: Low constant water levels are maintained because they are used in agriculture.

• High lying polders: High constant water levels are maintained and they’re used in pasture areas.

• They avoid the land from being flooded.

• There are the famous “tulip crops”.

• They are also called pumps.
