Dear reader,

The Royal Dutch Athletics Federation is proud to present its delegation for the 12th IAAF World Indoor Championships in Valencia. For a number of years, the Dutch Athletics Team has been very successful. We hope and expect to continue this trend in the Olympic year 2008.

Dutch Athletics is coming off another banner year in 2007. Its athletes grabbed headlines in a wide range of events and categories. Lornah Kiplagat won not one, but two World Championships titles (in Cross Country and Road Running). In the field Rutger Smith won his second World Championships medal, this time with the discus (bronze) instead of Shot Put in 2005 (silver) - a truly unique com-bination. Melissa Boekelman (shot put gold) and Machteld Mulder (800 meters bronze) won European junior medals. In addition, it was indoors that the Dutch scored most. Arnoud Okken won the 800 metres of the European championships and Karin Ruckstuhl got bronze in Birmingham amidst an exceptional pentathlon field. Fantastic was the 1-2 punch in the 60 meter hurdles by Gregory Sedoc and Marcel van der Westen.

Sadly but understandably this foursome will forego the indoor season and prefer a longer preparation period for the Olympic Games in Beijing. Some athle-tes are recuperating from injuries. Still the Dutch Athletics Team has a genuine medal contender in its ranks with Rutger Smith. Not only has the 26-year old giant from Groningen gained a lot of experience since his last World Indoors performance in 2004, he has also won his share of medals, among which is his European Indoor Championships silver in 2005. This year, Rutger has shown excellent form already by improving on his own national record in his sea-son’s debut at the national championships (20.89m). Rutger has indicated he relishes the opportunity to take on the strong Americans once again. With the year 2008 all geared towards the Olympic Games, the World Indoor Championships are an excellent opportunity for new talent to showcase

themselves and gain crucial international expe-rience. Two members of the Dutch Athletics Team in Valencia definitely belong in this category. Their development this year is remarkable, as sprinter Maarten Heisen (24) came back from injury last year and now improved his four year old personal best over 60 meters to 6.66 (almost breaking the Dutch national record of 6.63). Robert Lathouwers’ inclusion in the team is just as exciting, especially given the event in which he qualified. Robert only became an 800 meter runner at the age of 23, switching events in 2007 after battling injuries for years while focussing on the 400 meters.

The Royal Dutch Athletics Federation wishes the best of luck to its small but fine selection of athletes for these World Indoor Championships. Dutch Athletics itself is also looking forward to next year, especially the 2009 indoor season. In the city of Apeldoorn Dutch athletes will have their own, beautiful indoor stadium named Omnisportcentrum. Dutch Athletics hopes that many foreign internationals will also find their way to Netherlands’ pre-eminent indoor venue.

Dutch Athletics wishes all competitors and delega-tions excellent championships, with fair competi-ton and outstanding results!

A word with...

In recent years, Dutch Athletics has developed quite an impressive 800 metres stronghold, with Bram Som and Arnoud Okken being the reigning European champions (outdoor and indoor, respectively). However, it is safe to assume few people will know Robert Lathouwers as an 800 metres runner. A brief introduction:

Robert Lathouwers

Q. You ran your first indoor 800 metres on February 10th of this year, what was that expe-rience like?

RL: In the end it was great, but the race itself felt like a real struggle. As a 400 metres runner you mostly run in your own lane so I have to get used to the pushing, pulling, and kicking. Fortunately that was over after two laps so I could concentra-te on my own race. Happily, I had enough energy left for a good sprint.

Q: You only became a middle distance runner last year, can you explain the switch from the 400 metres?

RL: I switched because my body simply could not handle the 400 metres. It seems like every time I ran I pulled one of my hamstrings. The speed was simply too high for me. With the change comes more aerobic training sessions and less pure speed. until now, that feels great, I have no aches or pains.

Q: Do you still feel you approach the 800 metres as a 400 metres runner? Or do you consider yourself a true specialist already?

RL: Right now I see myself as a 600 metres runner who is focussing to add the last 200 metres com-fortably. Eventually, I need to become a real 800 metres specialist. I need more speed-endurance

capacity, but that is going to take a little bit more training...

Q: You train both in Rotterdam, closer to home, as well as at the National Sports Centre Papendal with national coach Honoré Hoedt (who guided Som and Okken to their successes, ed.). Can you tell us about working with both him and Errol Esajas?

RL: The cooperation works perfectly for me. Mondays and Tuesdays I train with Honoré at Papendal, sometimes also in the weekend. The other days of the week I work with Errol in Rotterdam. The running is all based on Honoré’s training programs, Errol is responsible for running technique and strength training. This way I have got two great trainers to help me! Q: Dutch Athletics now has a relative luxury of three internationals in the 800 metres. Do you work much together with Bram and Arnoud? What can you learn from them?

RL: The Dutch 800 metres is doing fine indeed. unfortunately, I have not been able to do much with Bram or Arnoud, as they have had injuries since I started running 800 metres. Now, they are far along in their recuperation. So hopefully we will be able to get to that now. These are world elite athletes with a lot of experience in training as well as racing.

Q: At 24, the World indoors will be your first major (senior) championships. What is your largest con-cern: physical fitness, nerves perhaps, or race stra-tegy? RL: I am not the nervous type, if you can judge that about yourself. So a few nerves will not kill me. I would most like to get a few more weeks of heavy training in. I have done so few months of training that I just like to get better. Race strategy is reaso-nably under control. We will have to make some adjustments for the Worlds, but that will work out just fine!

Q: With a recent personal best of 1.46,7 (outdoors), do you feel you have a shot at the 1:45.25 Olympic qualification mark?

RL: I really think so, yes. There are no guarantees, but my limited training for the 800 metres leaves a lot of room for improvement. My first race in Secunda last month was 1.3 seconds faster than my personal best. A similar improvement would mean the qualification mark for the Olympics. This summer I will be looking for a good race at the right time!
