June 2, 2019 - Molokai: The Story of Father Damien 1999 (2HR) Based on a true story, this drama focuses on Father Damien (David Wenham), a Roman Catholic priest from Belgium who takes up a post at a Hawaiian leprosy settlement. Appalled by the conditions that he finds the lepers living in, Damien works tirelessly to aid the stricken people. In addition to making the colony more habitable, Damien tries to act as a spiritual guide for the beleaguered islanders, always selflessly putting the well-being of others first. June 9, 2019 - The Reluctant Saint: St. Joseph of Cupertino, 1962 (1HR 45Min) In 17th century Italy, a simple and humble young man joins a Franciscan order, pursues full priesthood and performs a miracle that eventually ensures his sainthood.

Waiting in confident prayer is a theme in today’s readings. In this Sunday between the Solemnities of the Ascension and Pentecost, we emulate the first disciples as they hoped for Jesus’ promise of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. In the First Reading, taken from the Acts of the Apostles, we hear Stephen pray, “Lord Jesus, receive my prayer.” Like Jesus, Stephen dies praying for forgiveness for his enemies: “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” The Second Reading contains the final words of the Bible. John, who was entrusted with these visions, ends with a confident prayer by which he calls out: “Come, Lord Jesus.” These words continue to echo as Christians pray with confidence the prayer the Lord taught us: “Thy Kingdom come.” On the eve of his death, Jesus prays with expectation for the unity of all his followers who are to come. He entrusts them, and we are included among them, to the care of his Father. The faith of future generations is transmitted through the witness of the lives of disciples. The unity for which Jesus prays is a unity with each other but more especially a unity with the Trinity: “So that they may all be one, as you Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us.” The final hope of our confident prayer is to be united with one another in the happiness of our union with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. How does Stephen’s prayer echo that of Jesus’ just before

he died? What do these two images in the second reading refer to:

“Blessed are they who wash their robes so as to have the right to the tree of life?

How has your life been enriched by the Spirit as you wait

in confident prayer?
