DURBIN CROSSING
POND PRESS
Happy May Durbin Crossing Residents!
Most poems about May reference flowers, spring rain, and fuzzy baby animals. Obviously, these
poets were residing in more temperate climates, because while I did get to see my bluebird
fledglings take their first flight last week, we are well past the mild days and cool nights that are
typically associated with Spring.
After above average January rainfall in the St Johns River Basin, including St Johns County, low
rainfall levels were reported for February and March, and continued through most of April. Alt-
hough surface and groundwater conditions are still within normal in our area, low water levels
have been noted in ponds around Jacksonville. There are benefits to short periods without rain-
fall, however, especially in the spring. As the air and water temperatures increase, we have
found that a drier Spring limits the influx of fertilizers into ponds and cuts down significantly on
the number of early-season algae blooms we encounter. This will likely change after the next
large front blows through and drops a healthy dose of rain on our lawns.
We are welcoming some new pond residents into Durbin Crossing. An experimental stocking of
blue tilapia was placed into one of the ponds to help with algae control. Tilapia are a fish species
native to North Africa and the Middle East. While they are widespread in Florida waterways,
there was a temporary stocking prohibition for a period of some years, so that the State could
determine whether their presence in Florida could, or should, be controlled. Since then, they
haven’t been deemed hazardous enough to Florida waterways, and they’re again approved for
stocking in stormwater ponds in most counties. Tilapia feed heavily on algae and aquatic vegeta-
tion, and their bedding habits can keep the bottom of ponds clear of nuisance vegetation. The
only downfall to using Tilapia is their sensitivity to cold temperatures. Typically, Jacksonville is
as far north as you can go to keep Tilapia in ponds year-round, and even in here, an extended
hard freeze can lead to fish kills, so they should always be stocked cautiously. In the meantime,
we are excited to see how these little guys handle their new home!

CELEBRATE CINCO DE MAYO ...with a delicious lunch while sitting poolside! Blue Fish Taco
will be at South Durbin from 11am-2pm.
Don’t cook lunch, come and enjoy the pool and some great food!
With more than 100 known elements, 16 are essential plant & turf nutrients.
The key 3 are:
• (N) Nitrogen is essential for plant and turf growth
• (P) Phosphorus is very important for establishing new grass and pushing outward
growth of established grass
• (K) Potassium (AKA potash) helps increase winter hardiness and helps to increase
disease and drought resistance.
If you look at a bag of fertilizer you will see 3 numbers. An example would be 24-2-11. These
numbers show you the percentage of Nitrogen (24) – Phosphorus (2) – Potassium (11) in each bag. No,
these do not equal to 100%. The other 63% (for this example) is inert product that is used to make sure
the proper percentage of N, P, and K are distributed evenly when applied. Different percentages of ferti-
lizer will help with different issues. Phosphorus rich fertilizer will help and newly seeded yard root. Ni-
trogen rich fertilizer will help your established lawn grow thicker.
There are 2 types of nitrogen releases: fast and slow. Fast is available to the plant immediately.
There is a quick burst of growth/ color perk, followed by nothing as the nitrogen has been used up at
suck a rapid pace. Slow is coated in Sulphur. Once on the ground bacteria in the soil slowly starts to eat
away at the coating. Slowly releasing nitrogen into the soil. This process can take up to 8 weeks, so in-
stead of a quick perk up and done (as with the fast release) you get continuous growth and greening.

CALLING ALL OF OUR TADPOLES, MINNOWS AND FISH!
EXCITING NEWS… we are currently registering all Durbin Crossing “fish” for our
swim lesson programs. We are offering lessons for our lil’ residents ages 3 and older.
Whether you would like to get more comfortable in the water, have peace
of mind of being “water safe” or learn a stroke. We will have the perfect class for you.
Lessons start in June; day and evening classes are available and will fill up fast, don’t
delay sign up for your spot TODAY! All information is posted on our website:
durbincrossingliving.com, just click to print or stop by the South office for a form
and to pre-pay and register. Any questions, just call us at 904-230-2011 or email
Amenity Manager, Danelle DeMarco at [email protected].
We look forward to signing you up soon… just keep SWIMMING!
Our pools at Durbin Crossing are here to serve all of our very diverse community. Please remember to be considerate of your neighbors while at the pool. Also, please remember that if
one activity is not your “cup of tea,” we have many activities that are. We will do our best to let our residents know when an activity may impact your experience at the pool in
order for you to plan accordingly.
We are lucky enough to have TWO pools to choose from; each with its own unique features. If, for example, there is an activity planned at South, you know that North is available for your
enjoyment. Lessons and teams also consist of ALL residents, your neighbors!
Also, please keep in mind we live in Florida and water is EVERYWHERE! Every child that we can teach to swim or pass along survival tactics can literally save lives! We need to try and
remember when our kids were little, or we were.
Please be considerate as our pools can get quite crowded during peak times of the day. Loud conversations and rowdy behavior can impact others in a negative way. Please be mindful of
those around you and they you. Our Amenity Centers are for everyone here at Durbin Crossing.
Let’s keep our amenities something to be proud of! We look forward to seeing you, ENJOY!

P L Policy Pool Apparel
Proper swimming apparel is necessary to ensure a pleasant swimming experience for ALL! When
deciding what swimsuit to wear to either Durbin pool, please consider that this is a family, community

the facility. So, please leave that new adorable, slightly risqué suit for the beach. Thank you for under-
standing.
Age Restrictions
Children, 14 years of age and younger, must be accompanied by an adult at least 18 years of age. For
your safety; the children’s pool and water play features are limited to children 13 years and under.
Guest Passes
Each household will receive 24 free guest passes from Spring Break-Labor Day. After the 24 guest
passes have been used the cost per guest is $5.00 per visit. Please remember that there is a 5 guest limit
per household, per visit to either pool. Also, you are required to remain with your guest(s) at all times
during their visit and are responsible for their actions. Guest(s) will be registered upon entry.
Toys
The following items are generally allowed: noodles, kick boards, water wings, soft foam balls and dive
sticks. The only inflatable items allowed are those for infant floatation, with foot holes. Also, please
note that any regulation sporting equipment, i.e. footballs, soccer balls, etc. are not made for water play
and will not be allowed for the safety of others. We appreciate your cooperation.
General Rules
• Swim diapers are required for any child who is not properly toilet trained.
• Please keep children off of the lane ropes and out of the lap lanes unless lap swimming. This is for
the safety of all pool patrons.

Florida is the lightning capital of the United States and it is ranked as the
NUMBER ONE state for deaths due to lightning.
• Did you know that lightning kills more people in the U.S. than hurricanes and tornadoes combined?
• Lightning travels at the speed of light, while thunder travels at the speed of sound.
• A single bolt of lightning can discharge about 100 million bolts of electricity and can travel as far as
25 miles from a cloud. It does not need to be dark directly overhead.
• If you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance!
• One thunderstorm can generate a thousand or more lightning strikes in an hour!
• Lightning is actually 3 times hotter than the sun’s surface!
With all that knowledge and critical information we’d like to remind you of Durbin Crossing’s
thunderstorm policy. If we hear thunder or see lightning, we will clear, close, and secure the
facility for 30 minutes. Every time thunder is heard or lightning is seen, the clock is restarted to
30 minutes. This is strictly enforced for your safety!
No life is worth the risk!
