WHENmostpeoplethinkoftheword“nutrients” they usually think interms of proteins, fats, sugars, vita-mins – but not water. In fact, wateris themostessentialnutrient.Anan-imalcansurviveweekswithoutfood,but only days without water.
Elderly or sick animals may not
even survive a day or two withoutwater – it can certainly precipitate amajor crisis (for example, cats withkidney disease can NEVER be with-outwater, oranimalsonheartmedi-cation).
Water has NO calories and doesnot supply energy – so “putting ananimal ondrip” doesNOTequal cal-ories–soaproperlyhydratedanimal
can still “starve” and lose muscle(and organ) mass. Many vets put vi-tamins into drips – it is debatablewhether this is of any value, exceptintherarecaseof(documented)vita-min deficiencies. But drips are amatter for a later article.
Water is necessary for digestion,to support circulation, toxin andnu-trient metabolism and excretion,
andforimmunity(drymucousmem-branes are easier portals for patho-gen entry).
All pets should have their waterbowls cleaned and refilled at leastdaily. A cat on kibbles needs about200-250mlwaterperday,andadogabout 50 – 100 ml/kg/day (i.e. 2 – 5L for a great Dane). Steel bowls aremore hygienic.

The matter has been set downontheCouncilAgenda for30Octo-

The building has been deterio-rating for months now drawingpublic outcry from the Umdloticommunity.
There was alarm that looseglass and aluminium windowframes on the top floor would in-jure passersby if they fell to theground.
The recent gale-force windshas exacerbated the situation.
Councillor Geoff Pullan agreedwith the community saying, “Thebuildingisnotsafe,eitherforoccu-piers or for people passing by.
He toldFever, “Themunicipali-tyhas removed the looseglassandaluminium on the top floor.
“A porta-cabin has also beenplacedat the site for the lifeguardsandtheirequipment,[untilthelife-guard building is replaced], toserve the Tidal pool.
“I have not yet seen an alloca-tion or vote for the new building,”Pullan added.
The councillor said that hehoped the new lifeguard buildingwould be rebuilt soon as the twobeaches at Umdloti are still un-der pilot status for Blue Flagaccreditation.

CELEBRATING 40 years in anybusiness is an achievement.
John Porteous - proprietorof Elizabeth’s Florist in La LuciaMall- is the only original tenant still trad-ing since the opening of the shoppingcentre 40 years ago.
“Icanrememberchoosingmyspoton the corner before the roof was puton,” John told Fever.
Other extensions (and the lifts)were all added years later.
“When the mall was first builtthere was only sugar cane north ofShelbourne Avenue.”
The florist’s roots extend furtherback than 1974, as John’s mother(Elizabeth - the shop’s namesake)used to owna florist “close to the cor-ner of Kensington Drive and Broad-way - originally called Durban NorthGardenCentre - some60yearsago inthe early Fifties.”
Growing up around flowers (Johnis a Northwood Old Boy) - and after
studying to be a teacher and a stintwith a retail company - John and hiswife Jenni then opened Elizabeth’sFlorist at the mall.
They still have some customerswho used to order flowers from hismom.
Apart from the locals they havemade up stunning flower arrange-ments for visiting VIP’s such as JanetJackson, Kim Basinger and Victoriaand David Beckham!
“It had to be an all-white arrange-mentforVictoria’sbirthday,”Johnre-members.
John’s daughter, Tarryn, is nowher father’s right-hand.
Just prior to her birth, La LuciaMall was the first shopping centre inSouthAfrica tobeallowed to tradeona Sunday - in 1979.
Tarryn was born onMother’s Dayin 1980 - one of the busiest days onany florist’s calendar apart from Val-entine’s Day - “I had to run betweenthe hospital and the shop on the Sun-dayand thenputupa largesign in thewindow announcing “It’s a Girl!”John said.
Technology and improved trans-portation has helped during strikesand - a florist’s main bugbear - theweather!
“At least now there are alternativeoptions during supply problems as

What not to do when you areapproached by your creditors
I DO talks at schools, encouraging teens to make theright choices in life when it comes to choosing friends, smoking, drugs, alcoholabuse, bullyingandpornography.
When it comes to pornography, our children haveaccess to the internet on their cell phones, or friend’scell phone, as well as the traditional magazines, strip
pers, and DVD’s.In my talks I stress how easy it is to become a porn
addict, and how degrading it is to women, to be seenpurely as a sexual being.
By indulging in porn, one is supporting theindustry, and in most cases, making immoral peoplewealthy, at the expense of the dignity and respect ofwomen.
Most men, driven by testosterone, have a weakness for the trap of pornography, and unfortunately,
porn is made light of at times, and not seen for thedangerous addiction it is.
When our children learn that their parents indulge in pornography, it makes the practice almostacceptable, or at least, “not THAT bad?” “After all,if my parent(s) watch porn, how bad can it really be;just harmless fun, surely?”
Here is a challenge to all those who might relateto this letter...
Let’s set the example to our children, and makeour homes “porn free”, as much as we possibly can?Let us throw the “trash” into the trash, where nooneelse can access it.
And if it’s appropriate, do it with your teenager’scompany/buy in.
Let them know that your household does not believe in degrading women, but believe that womenneed to be seen as God’s creation, deserving of respect, not just a physical body for a man’s pleasure.

autofeverR5 mln McLarenstolen in Durban heist>> Police reports car had been ordered for aDurban business tycoon
AMCLAREN 650S, worth over R5 million and one of only a handful in theworld, was stolen in a cargo heist
shortly after arriving at Durban Harbour onMonday 20 October, reports The Witness.
It is understood that the sports car ar
rived at the Durban Harbour on Monday andonce cleared through customs had beenplaced in an unmarked container bound forJohannesburg.
Law enforcement reports that the theheavy goods truck carrying the McLaren was
hijacked in Warden near the KZNFree Stateborder. The driver had been thrown out bycriminals at Hartebeespoort although wasunharmed in the robbery.
Police reports that the car had been ordered for a Durban business tycoon, whohad bought the performance vehiclethrough his company. The businessman denied this and insisted his company had notpurchased the sports car.
Imperial Logistics marketing executiveMichelle Neilson confirmed that a truck washijacked on the N3 with a container containing laptops and the McLaren 650 S.
Neilson said a case was opened at Erasmia police station near Pretoria and that anImperial Investigations task team was assigned to the case. “No further informationcan be disclosed at this stage due to thehighly sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation,” Neilson said.
Daytona Motor Group CEO Justin Divarissaid the car was bound for its showroom inSandton. “I firmly believe that whoeverstole the truck had no idea what they hadtaken. There is obviously no market for a carlike that in SA.” He also denied that the Durban business mogul had bought the car, andsaid they looked forward to getting their carback. — Jeff Wicks.

JeanFrancois Payen, a doctor atthe Grenoble hospital that treatedSchumacher after his injury in December 2013, said he has visited the Schumacher family at home in Switzerlandto track his patient’s progress.
Schumacher was with his 14yearold son in the French Alps when he fell, hitting the side of his head on a rockand cracking his helmet.
“Life after a head injury is punctuated by stages. We hope, but we have togive him time,” said Payen last Thursday.
He predicted a convalescence ofone to three years.
Earlier French F1 commentatorJeanLouis Moncet repeated a reportthat Schumacher was “waking up veryslowly” from the induced coma controlling his serious brain injuries.
Moncet said: “I saw his son and hetold me Schumi was waking up veryslowly, very slowly.”
Payen commented: “It is to see howhe progresses and then tell his wife andhis children what changes I have observed. He is in very favourable conditions.
