Funded through community membership & RSP program

Funded through service revenue & grants

Page 6: DuraSpace Plenary at OR14

…Last year we needed to debunk some myths

• DuraSpace has teams of developers working on DSpace and Fedora

• DuraSpace is still funded by the Moore foundation and others

• “My sponsorship dollars are funding Duracloud?!”

Page 7: DuraSpace Plenary at OR14

We needed to increase the level of contribution and

engagement for both projects to ensure long

term success

Page 8: DuraSpace Plenary at OR14

Happy to report• 70% increase in funding to

DSpace/Fedora projects in 2013, $708,870

• Community Governance is being established for all projects

• DuraSpace continues to make progress in building a sustainable model for the organization

Increasing ownership and participation through Membership

and Governance

Page 19: DuraSpace Plenary at OR14

Why Membership?

• Membership is consistent with our move towards participatory governance

• Increase community support– For many institutions, “Sponsorship” is a no-

no! (Implies charitable contribution)– More institutions are budgeted for

memberships; fewer for sponsorships

Page 20: DuraSpace Plenary at OR14

Goals

• Consistent models across projects with room for customization

• Keep administrative costs low• Roll out membership while governance

evolves• Easy transition for current sponsors• Appeal to new members with benefits

and opportunities for participation• Honor commitment, action, and merit!

Page 21: DuraSpace Plenary at OR14

Two Levels of Benefits

• Institutions receive DuraSpace benefits associated with their membership level.

• If they choose to support a specific project(s) with their membership fees, they also receive project-specific governance benefits appropriate to their level of commitment.

Page 22: DuraSpace Plenary at OR14

Highlights

• Four levels ($2500 - $20,000+)• Inclusive of developing nations ($250)• New discounted training benefit• Discount on cloud services• All members eligible to vote for one at-

large DuraSpace board director• Each project may nominate

representative to serve on board• We offer DuraSpace-level benefits;

steering groups agree on project governance benefits
