AdvantagesMMF

While Media Filters alone might be cheaper than UF skids, the total cost of project could potentially be more expensive than when using UF skids, which are fully automated, easy to operate and easier to handle and replace. .

A low-cost cover for the UF system could suffice to protect modules from UV exposure

Pre-strainer cost is not significant in the total cost of project. In addition, cartridge filters may be avoided.

UF can withstand up to 40C and 4-6 bar, which is enough in most of the cases

MMF also suffer from clogging due to O&G and would require more frequent backwashing

UF systems can also be designed without filtrate tank (i.e. Direct-Feed UF+RO)

Biggest Challenges Associated to Media Filters and UF comparison

Internal Use Only 11

Subjected to filtrate quality upsets due to fluctuations in

feed qualityMay need

coagulation aid to ensure

effective removal of SS

High footprint requirements

Environmental aspects: Use of coagulants,

handling of effluent

High transportation cost due to

weight of vessel and

media

After backwash

filtrate does not meet quality criteria

UF provides constant and consistent filtrate water quality regardless feed water fluctuations

UF does not require use of polymers or coagulants for an effective removal of fine solids and particles due to its small pore size

UF uses lower Footprint and Structural requirements, has lower weight and can be pre-assembled

What is IntegraFlux™ and Why?

Internal Use Only 15

DuPont’s latest UF innovation that offers up to 30% lower TMP and produces up to 20% more flow per

module while lowering UF system CapEx and OpEx, when compared to standard products.

How did we do it?

35% higher permeability fibers than standard DuPont UF

Higher pore density, smaller pores, new PVDF fiber formulation

Same module format using proven module and skid configuration

How does this benefit customers?

• Lower Costs by Providing Solutions that:

Improve Productivity

Increase Efficiency

Leverage Existing Module and Skid Designs

Focus on Increasing Fiber PermeabilityImproves Productivity and Efficiency

17

• Increasing Permeability has Many Benefits:

Lower Energy (Reduced operating pressure)

Wider Process Window (Wider TMP Range available)

Higher Water Recovery/Less Waste (e.g. cleaning cycles extended)

• In case of Operating at Higher Flux:

Fewer Modules needed

Reduced Chemical Consumption (lower chemical solution volume)

Smaller BW pump, CIP pump, Blower/Compressor, CEB dosing systems, less piping, steels, etc. lower CAPEX

Zero liquid discharge (ZLD)

• Zero liquid discharge is a process that is beneficial to industrial and municipal organizations as well as the environment. It saves money and no effluent to discharge

• ZLD systems employ the most advanced wastewater treatment technologies to purify and recycle virtually all of the wastewater produced

Mining Wastewater – MLD

32

Application: Water recovery of mining wastewater containing high metals, salts, and

organics

Problem to Solve: The existing plant was using low energy competitor membranes and the

system was operating near the upper limits of the feed pump curve. Despite cleaning,

irreversible fouling resulted in lower system recovery and high down stream brine

management costs (ZLD). Low energy membranes with more robust, fouling resistance

performance were needed.

Project: Flouride Removal Project, Kenya

Partners: Little Sisters of St Francis (LSOSF), DuPont, Davis & Shirtliff, USAID, KIWASH

Grant Amount ($): $133,000 (KSH 13.5mm)

Challenges: High fluoride levels from borehole water intended for use in a primary & secondary school, level 5

hospital & also supply water to the community. It is estimated the about 20 million Kenyans suffer from teeth and

bone fluorosis as a result of high Fluoride levels in most water sources.

Solution: Dow’s NF technology was used to treat the water that now supplies the School, hospital and

surrounding Community
